Metolius River - June 21st 2012

Recorded:  Sunny75 ° F Fishing: Great

Another beautiful week on The Met!  Several different mayfly, caddis, and stonefly species are hatching with more and more consistency and strength.  I was caught up in a tremendous PMD hatch on Tuesday.  The rainbows and I really enjoyed that afternoon!  I am noticing the appearance of Yellow Sallies and some little green stones… always a sign of summer.

Golden Stones usually are hatching by 4th of July so don’t be surprised if you see a few early hatching golden stones in the upper river.  Golden Stone nymphs are a must if you are wet-fly fishing.  The Green Drake continues its inconsistent appearance in mid-afternoon.  Even if you don’t see a natural GD, search likely holding / feeding lanes with a dry GD… we’ve been consistently raising fish this way.

Shop Tip:  It’s awesome to see so many bugs hatching this time of year!  It’s common to see 4-5 different insects hatching at the same time… makes for great dry-fly opportunities.  However, with the trout’s menu expanding, the fish can be particularly selective to fly and sensitive to presentation.  Make sure you head out with a good variety of emerger, adult, and spinners / cripples of relevant insect species.  Don’t underestimate the importance of observation!!  During a “complex hatch,” fish will often be keyed in on just one of the multitude of bugs hatching.  Sometimes they are keyed into a particular life stage as well.  If you watch the fish’s behavior and put some thought into tactics…you will land some nice fish.

RAINBOWS:  Caddis, PMDs, BWOs, Green Drake, Golden Stone, midges, Yellow Sally, little green stone, spinners / cripples.

BULL TROUT:
fishing has been pretty good for these piscivorous fish.  Streamers and nymphs pick these guys up.  Steelhead tactics and gear work best… 7 wt rod minimum.  Come on in and see are large selection of bull trout flies.
