Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
With the fishing being so great down here all week things have been very exciting and busy. It's been a week filled with fish boxes filled to the rim with massive catches of Yellowfin Tuna to Big Eye Tuna over six feet long. Then there's been the scattered Marlin and Sailfish catch and releases mixed in just to put some icing on the cake. Everyday you hear comments like, "This reminds me of the old days", or "This is the best Tuna fishing I can ever remember seeing!" Honestly I'm not sure which is the case. I just know it's been a really exciting few weeks. Everyday we're lucky enough to see so many smiling faces in front of the Booking desk after having their angling dreams come true. I lost count a while back but we've definitely gone through an amazing amount of citation forms over the last few weeks for Trophy size fish. Almost a century ago a Capt down in Hatteras had a stroke of genius and decided that people might want to pay money to fish on a chartered boat on the Outer Banks. He took a huge risk by structuring his boat for recreational fishing as opposed to commercial. But I think he knew in his heart what we all are seeing now. The Outer Banks is blessed with some of the world's most outstanding fishing grounds. There have been several days where an Angler couldn't find a single charter boat available at any Marina this week. We've been working really hard to try and get everyone an opportunity to fish this week. It really has been a wonderful thing to see so many happy faces at the docks this week.
Today's Offshore fishing continued to be outstanding. There were some boats with larger numbers of Dolphin then Tuna for the first time in at least two weeks. However, the Yellowfin Tuna are still dominating the catches with the majority of the fleet limited out or coming close to doing so today. Three Bigeye over 200 pounds were brought in today as well. With so many Bigeyes and Billfish showing up this week, it's been a good indicator that we would be seeing a fresh wave of summertime guests showing up now. Quite a few Blue and White Marlin were caught and released today too. One boat hooked two in the 500 pound class. One Massive Blue Marlin swallowed a hooked yellowfin tuna a leader length from the boat. It then spit it out and began to circle what was left of the Tuna then finally was rehooked and after a long fight it was lost right at the boat before the leader was grabbed. The entire fleet both Offshore and Nearshore was out on the water today. Needless to say the Fish Cleaners are working really hard this afternoon.
They say that the sign of a good angler is their ability to adapt to the conditions that are given to them. We've all experienced our best laid plans thrown out the window when we look at the Marine Forecast the day before a fishing trip. The Nearshore Captain's really did an outstanding job of demonstrating their ability to adapt several days this week, including today. Despite it being very rough and windy today they all proved why they are such a valuable asset to a fishing party by catching really good numbers of fish inside the Inlet. No Cobia to report today and with this weekend's forecast calling for the wind to lay down we've all got our fingers crossed to see some Cobia caught.
Inshore the Speckled Trout fishing was really outstanding today. Every charter came in with limits both morning and afternoon trips. There definitely seems to be an uncanny connection to the Trout really turning on whenever there is a full moon. Speckled Trout spawn at nights nearly all summer long. They seem to spawn heavily during the full moon then are caught feeding the next day.
