7-1-13 Fishing in Islamorada in Early July

Summer's here and the Florida Keys Fishing Charters have beenhard at it! The mahi bite has been fair the past few days. About 1/2 the boats are having good catches, and the other half the boats are finding a few fish, or lots of undersize fish. The Cloud Nine had a great catch a couple days ago including another big BULL weighing in at 48 lbs. The humps have been holding plenty of blackfin tuna, mostly "footballs", but they are great fighters and make for some great meals. The Reef Fishing has been great. The boats have been catching plenty of yellowtail snapper still, and more and more mangrove (gray) snapper, have been making their way out to the reef to spawn. There's still been a couple mutton snappers too. We had another unusual color change for this time of year, and there was some sailfish migrating down it. Not a ton of fish, but the Kalex released 1 sailfish today, and two yesterday, and the Gon Fishin also released 1 sail yesterday. It was a nice suprise for this time of year! There was also a couple cobia caught on the color change just outside the reef. If the wind swings more eastward, there could be some more sailfish on it the next couple days if the currents hold. A couple days ago the Catch 22 was trolling for mahi and caught and released an estimated 225 lb blue marlin, which goes to show you that you never know what will bite when trolling offshore of Islamorada. The Bn'M II and Catch 22 have also been daytime swordfishing some the past week. It's been a tough bite, some days yielding a couple bites, and a few trips without any bites. However, 12 year old Derek caught a 60 lb swordfish all by himself in 1750' of water aboard the Bn'M II a couple days ago, and the Catch 22 reported hooking two fish today, but unfortunately pulled the hooks on both. Aboard the Bn'M II we didn't have any swordfish strikes, but did do some deep dropping and caught a few barrel fish up to 26 lbs on the way home. I think the mahi bite should get more consistent as the week progresses, and the reef fishing should still remain the safest bet for action.
