Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
So early last week there was a tropical storm named Chantel that was coming towards us and the phones started ringing. Many people canceled their trips (unfortunately), because they thought we'd have lots of rain and wind here in Islamorada. We told people it was a long way away and it was too far away to really tell what was going to happen. The following days Chantel fell apart to nothing and the past 3 days here the Islamorada Fishing was great! Wednesday to Friday were three of the nicest days we've seen the past month here with light winds and plenty of sunshine! So never jump the gun to early when it comes to fishing in the florida keys! Now the mahi bite was definitely off from what it should have been the last couple of weeks, but thankfully it picked up the last few days and there were some great catches of fish! Each day it seemed to get a little bit better. Every boat that did full day offshore trips yesterday had mahi, anywhere from 10 fish up to 50 fish! There were all sizes caught too. Some boats hit a few big schools of fish, "schoolies" in the 3 - 5 lb range, where other boats had a handful of bigger fish in the 15 - 30 lb range. Some boats had some of each. The Reef Fishing has also still been very good for yellowtail snapper, with a few nice mutton snappers in the mix too. Some of the boats have been putting down some big rods as well and I heard of a few big bull sharks up to 200 lbs being caught and a nice goliath grouper about 75 lbs. There has still been some "football" blackfin tunas around on the humps, as well as plenty of skipjack tuna. The daytime swordfishing has been a little difficult lately, as 3 different boats were out the last week, but the Bn'M got back on the board yesterday going 2 for 2 on broadbill swordfish. The Gon Fishin V was trolling yesterday looking for mahi and hooked a nice fish in the long rigger, and after a 30 minute battle a 15 year old kid released his first ever blue marlin! They took a quick picture and then revived the fish and let it swim free. It looks like moderate winds the next few days so I think the mahi fishing will remain steady and the reef fishing should continue to provide plenty of action.
