7/25/13 Fishing the Florida Keys in July

 | By Seamus on 7/25/2013 11:15:46 AM | Views (118)

The backcountry fishing has still been good throughout july fishing in the florida keys.  Tarpon fishing was excellent the last few days around flamingo and off the mainland.  Catching bait early has been the ticket for them, we've found them back in the bays and around many of the backcountry flats.  The tarpon bite has been an early morning thing too, by 10:00 it's usually done with.  Later in the afternoons on the incoming tide they've turned on again a little though that has been more hit and miss.  I had young Nate and his dad Steve the last couple days, yesterday we were able to get bait early and do the tarpon thing.  We caught 2 out of 6 fish.  Hunter and Cannon the day before caught 2 out of 7 fish, and the boys the day before that caught 2 out of 3 in the afternoon.  There has also been plenty of sharks mixed in as well mostly blacktips.  We also were able to get into some snook pretty well the last 3 days, catching 8 - 15 a day plus a few juvenile goliath groupers.  They've been eating shrimp, pinfish, and pilchards if you can find them.  In the bays the snapper fishing was very good today, some nice big ones that look ready to go out and spawn after this next moon!  Capt. Jim Willcox yesterday made it out to the gulf they caught several permit on a flat calm gorgeous day.  He said plenty of sharks were out there  too and the permit were biting jigs and shrimp which is a lot of fun sight casting to them!  Capt. Mike Bassett had a good afternoon trip they got into a few redfish, 3 big snook, a baby tarpon, and some mangrove snappers for dinner.  Capt. John Johnansen has had tarpon and shark action in the backcountry as well the last few days.
