Offshore Beaufort Inlet Report for 7-30-2013

I had the opportunity to fish with Captain Jim on the Gaffer 40 miles offshore from Beaufort Inlet on Tuesday. The goal was to catch triggerfish. On our first drop in 130' of water, we caught several.

We hadn't been fishing too long, when I spotted some Mahi-mahi swimming close to the boat. We started throwing pitch baits and caught about 10 in just a few minutes. I hooked up to a tuna (false albacore or blackfin most likely) as well for a nice fight, but pulled the hook.

We then went back to bottom fishing and caught a lot more gray triggerfish using mainly squid wings and small 1/0 circle hooks. I was cheating with a sabiki style rig I made with 4 drops.

A little after noon, we saw more dolphin swimming close to the boat. Pitching just a hook with some squid on it, we caught nearly the entire school. 30 mahi in around 20 minutes. It was absolutely insane how quickly we filled up the huge Yeti cooler. Here is a clip of the last 6 minutes of action:

After the Mahi Mayhem, we went back to bottom fishing and caught more triggerfish, beeliners, and silver snapper. We also saw another group of mahi moving through, but already had our limit so never even tried.

We came in some to 90' of water and started catching some nice black sea bass. We also caught a few grunt, sand perch or squirrelfish as they call them locally, and a couple more triggerfish.

We had a great day on the water and I can't remember a time when the fishing was so steady all day. We threw back more fish than we kept, but brought home 40 dolphin, 40 triggerfish, a dozen black sea bass, and a few other reef fish.

I spent yesterday cleaning fish and had a tasty triggerfish sandwich for lunch. I took roe from the dolphin and scraps from the filets and pushed them through the meat grinder. I added cornmeal to the mush and put it all into an empty gallon milk jug. I put it in the freezer for our next trip. When drifting or anchored on a reef, we poke holes in the jug, tie rope to the handle of the jug and tie off on a cleat to get a nice chum slick going.
