8/2/13 August Backcountry Fishing in Islamorada

 | By Seamus on 8/2/2013 2:35:56 PM | Views (184)

Well we are officially getting into our slower season for fishing here in Islamorada especially in the backcountry.  The august islamorada fishing can still be very good though lack of visitors and the heat keep many people from getting out on the water.  The key this time of year is going early as the water temperatures are going to be cooler then which plays a big part in the fishing.  Bait also especially mullet can be caught early though once it gets bright and hot, it gets a lot tougher to catch them.  We've still been seeing quite a few tarpon in the backcountry, the local bite around islamorada has been a little slow though a few fish around still in the evenings.  We caught a nice 75 lb fish in the backcountry today plus a few sharks and snappers for dinner, and jumped a smaller tarpon off too. Been getting 1 or 2 fish tarpon day the last week just about every day though mostly early in the morning.  Yesterday we did some fun fishing and my father Richard Sr. caught a nice 12 lb snook on light spin and jig, we also had a few other snook, tripletail, and some sharks.  Capt. Mike Bassett caught 19 snook that day mostly small to medium size and a couple redfish too.  The snook are eating shrimp well there have been some decent size ones available which is great to see this time of year, though pinfish has worked for the larger fish pretty good too.  Today Capt. Bill Bassett fished the patch reefs for a couple hours, it was a little slow out there but managed some nice porgies and 1 hogfish for dinner.  Capt. Ben Ekblom had some good snapper fishing around some backcountry islands and got a nice lemon shark too.
