8-3-13 Islamorada Deep Sea Fishing in August

 | By Seamus on 7/29/2013 4:20:21 PM | Views (274)

The deep sea fishing in Islamorada continues to be steady into the first few days of august. The mahi bite has been decent, the boats that dedicate a full day fishing towards searching for them have been averaging anywhere from 15 - 30 keeper size fish. There's been quite a few schoolies, as well as a few big enough to gaff (10 - 25 lbs). The late summer / early fall Blackfin tuna blitz has started too. Having a lot of live bait to chum the tuna up on the humps is key, and yesterday the bait was plentiful and the boats that caught it had lots of action with "football" ( 3 - 10 lb) blackins. There was also a few nice ones mixed in from 15 - 18 lbs. The Relentless had 20 tunas yesterday! We use light spinning tackle to catch these fish, usually 15 lb test, so even a medium size tuna gives a terrific fight! Today the live bait was much tougher, but the boats that were patient caught some and produced some blackfins with it. On the Reef the yellowtail snapper bite was as good as it gets today, and both the Man O War and Gold Digger limited out early in the day. On the Bn'M we caught our limit of Vermillion snapper and a couple of tilefish. The Kalex went out in search of broadbill swordfish, and rumor has it he released a small one and brought a nice one home for dinner! We fished aboard the Bn'M II a few days the past week and caught a 141 lb sword one day, but no luck our last couple trips. The Catch 22 relelased a 100 lb mako shark today which was a nice suprise, and also a rack of mahi. The Man O War also caught and released a late summer sailfish today, which was an unexpected bite. A few days ago the Catch 22 caught this nice pair of queen snapper as well while deep dropping. The next few days look like great weather, so give us a call at 305-664-2461 to book your florida keys offshore fishing charter!
