Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Well it's the story every fisherman has told before, As soon as you leave the fishing gets really good. It was no different for me the past week. I took a vacation up in the mountains and chased down rainbow, brown, and cut throat trout in Montana, meeting up with Islamorada's legendary Capt. Skip Nielsen one day , who spends a few months a year up there now. Anyhow, the text messages and phone calls began early last week, with lots of big mahi's showing up. There was big bulls (aka "Bullheads") and cows biting every day! Along with the big mahi there was some big waves, and even some rain, but the deep sea fishing boats that were patient and put in full day offshore fishing charters hit green and gold! They said the seas were rough, but the fishing made it worth it! The boats the past week were averaging 5 - 10 slammers (mahi 20 + lbs) a piece and some schoolies and gaffers each trip. The Redfish weighed the biggest bull of the week, a fat 48 lber! But many other boats had fish in the mid to high 30's each day as well. In addition to the mahi being way offshore, there has still been a fair blackfin tuna bite on the hump, not monsters but decent "footballs" in the 4 - 10 lb range. As the boats troll around looking for signs of mahi, either birds working or floating debris, there's always a shot at catching a quality fish "out of the blue". The Gon Fishin V had nice suprise when they hooked a drag rippin' 37 lb wahoo today, and the Bn'M released a sailfish yesterday. Back on the reef the yellowtail snapper bite was in full swing the last couple days, with some boats limiting out with up to 50 snappers for dinner. The Strictly Business released a big bull shark on the reef a few days ago as well. The wind looks like it will blow the next few days, but if you can handle the choppy seas I think the mahi bite will remain steady with fish of all sizes. If you want to stay in a little calmer water the reef fishing should provide plenty of action and table fare.
