Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It's been somewhat of a windy August here while offshore fishing in Islamorada. The good news is though that it hasn't stopped any boats from getting out fishing and having a good time! The mahi bite did slow down some from what is was the last couple of weeks, but there's still been some good catches on the dock. The boats that are patient and put the time in are finding fish for the most part, including schoolies ( 3 - 5 lbs), a few gaffers, and a couple slammers (20 + lbs). Some boats have had 10 fish and other have hit some bigger schools of fish and brought in as many as 30 fish. Inbetween searching for the mahi, many boats have been stopping by the "hump" and catching some blackfin tuna, anywhere from 3 - 18 lbs, as well as some skipjack tuna. When we get our Fall tuna run, a lot of sharks show up on the humps as well. Theres been some big silky and dusky sharks released weighing up to 300 lbs. If you're looking for something that's big and pulls hard, shark fishing may be something to give a try. The reef fishing has still been very consistent as well, and is without a doubt your best bet for a 1/2 day fishing trip. The boats have been anchoring down catching plenty of yellowtail snapper, including some nice fish over 2 lbs, and there's also been a few mutton snapper up to 10 lbs mixed in. The daytime swordfishing has been tricky this year! One day they bite and the next day they shut down. Aboard the Bn'M II a few days ago we had a honey moon couple each catch their first shark on the hump, and then we went out and swordfished and they each caught a swordfish, one we tagged and released at 50 lbs, and another 95 lber we kept for dinner. I then fished a 36 hour trip the last two days and only had 1 cheap bite we missed. However, the Catch 22 has been out a few times the past week and did connect yesterday afternoon with a big 237 lb broadbill swordfish. It's definitely "big game fishing" and takes a lot of time and effort. You may not catch them every trip, but the days you do will feel that much sweeter. Capt. Sara from Florida Keys Eco Tour has also been out and about this week multiple times taking people lobstering and having good success. It's a hands on experience and you have a great shot at catching your own lobster dinner!
