8-23-13 Deep Sea Fishing in the Florida Keys

 | By Seamus on 8/20/2013 9:50:46 PM | Views (194)

It was a busy day today at the marina. Most of the florida keys deep sea fishing boats got out on private charters and headed offshore. A couple boats did 1/2 day fishing trips, both reef fishing and heading offshore since the fish have been fairly close the last few days. The best bet for guaranteed action on a 1/2 is typically on the reef, with snapper, jacks, mackerel, bonito, barracuda, etc., but occasionally when the weedlines are close enough in you can hit the mahi on a 1/2 day trip, although not most of the time! All of the boats which did full day trips filled the box with mahi. Most of the boats limited out (10 fish per person), with nice size schoolies (4 - 6 lbers) and a few gaffers (7 - 10 lbs). There was some big schools of fish around, with 50 - 100 fish in them, and the action was fast and furious when the boats found the schools of fish. The hump has still been very active with blackfin tuna, with some decent size "footballs" in the 3 - 10 lb range and a couple 15 lbers. If you want a big pull right now the Florida Keys Shark fishing is on fire on the humps! The silky and dusky sharks are eating a lot of the blackfin and skipjack tunas that are being hooked, but if you can put one out you have a good shot at catching a 200+ lb fish! The last few days the mahi fishing pretty good, with boats averaging 12 - 25 fish, but today and yesterday was definitely as good as it gets for action! Since most of the kids are back in school now a lot of charter boats have slowed down some, so give us a call at the marina office and let us set you up on a trip! 305 664 2461 ! There's not as much pressure on the fish out there since there's less boats as well! It's hard to say how long the giant schools of mahi will stick around for, but I think there will be plenty of fish to keep you busy between the blackfin tunas and mahi the next week here while Islamorada Fishing.
