Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
A handful of guides have been getting out here and there in the backcountry fishing in islamorada in september. Most of the fishing this time of year is best early in the morning with the water temperatures really heating up in the afternoon. The tarpon fishing has really slowed down, there is a shot at catching them still but you have to get lucky and find them. Capt. Rick Stanczyk fished a few days last week. One day they fished a full day and had a good variety. They got a couple permit in the gulf, a goliath grouper, some nice trout, several large blacktip sharks, a big mud marlin, and a few other large goliaths that they tangled with that rocked them up. The next day on a half day trip they caught a bunch of mangrove snappers and trout. Capt. Bill Bassett repoted some good spanish mackerel fishing a couple days last week. This is pretty early for them to be showing up but in another month or so it can start to get consistent. He also had a cobia in the gulf plus several sharks, and some patch reef fishing another day. Capt. Lonny Shaw had his limit of nice hogfish the other day too on a half day patch reef fishing trip. Capt. Jim Willcox has had some good fishing in the gulf too with cobia, goliath, and sharks reported... plus some action with redfish and snook in the everglades. As we get into October some of the redfish and snook fishing should get better and better especially in the deeper everglades creeks and canals. Also the fall mullet run can bring good tarpon fishing for a few weeks back there.
