9-14-13 Mid September Deep Sea Fishing! Great Action!

The Fall months can be a little tricky to predict what you will catch. A lot of the Spring and Summer time fish are thinning out and a few of the winter time fish are showing up. Yesterday though we saw some great catches of Mahi by the Islamorada Deep Sea fishing boats! The boats that did full day offshore trips were able to get far enough out and the boats that had clients who patient scored big! Here's a pic of a big Bull caught aboard the Man O War Yesterday. Most of the boats had from 10 - 20 mahi, with a good average size of fish. Most of the fish were 5 - 15 lbs, and a few were from 20 - 35 lbs, including a couple big bull-heads! Capt. Augie on the Predator said the mahi were very cooperative yesterday even his group, "Team Fish Whistle", was able to fill the rack! Some boats found floating debris with mahi and some fish were on weed lines, but the debris also produced a few small wahoo and a couple big triple tail. The tuna bite on the hump was really good earlier in the week, but did slow down some the past couple of days. The "football" blackfin tuna have been from 3 - 15 lbs and there's been some hard fighting skipjacks mixed in with them too. The reef has been good for snapper fishing, mostly yellowtails and then out a little deeper there has been vermillion snapper. There's also been a few king mackerel starting to show up and quite a few yellow jacks. I have a couple good daytime swordfish stories from the past week too. Aboard the Bn'M II on the 9th we had 73 year old Local angler Ken out to complete his Bucket List of fish. Broadbill swordfish was the target. We left early and fished all day. Finally at 3 p.m. we hooked up. It seemed like a nice fish, but after a 50 minute from 1600' of water, it turned out to be a night shark. It wasn't gonna put that last check on his bucket list. We made one more drop in desperation, and at 4:05 we had almost all given up, but then we got the bite we were looking for. The bite we had waited for all day. The fish Ken had always dreamed about catching since he started fishing over 50 years ago. But unfortunately it looked extremely similar to the last fish, which was a night shark. He considered letting his son catch this fish since it was acting like a shark, but we said you never know. After a 45 minute tug of war the fish made an appearance next to the boat, I said told Ken he better hang on. He had his big sword on. After a quick pic on the surface the fish melted 700' of line of the 80 wide and Ken went back to work. After 25 more minutes he had the fish boatside and we sank the gaffs into a healthy 169 lb broadbill swordfish. I told him don't forget to put that check on his bucket list... I deep dropped for swords again on the 12th and I told Michael most trips had been 1 to 2 shots, and some trips yielded none, but it was an early gift for his 70th birthday and he said he wanted to go big or go home. So big we went, and we ran 40 miles in search of his first daytime sword. After a slow morning we finally hooked the a swordfish after lunch. Michael got in the chair and after a 45 minute fight boated a nice 144 lb broadbill. The next week I imagine there will be some blackfin tunas and skipjacks on the hump, there should be some mahi but you may need patience in finding them, and the reef should have plenty of action with snapper as well.
