Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It's been a gorgeous week here while fishing is Islamorada. October is still a transistional month, and we are seeing a little bit of everything. It can be tough to predict what you will catch this time of year, but I can assure you there's always some sort of fish to be caught! Most of the boats have been focusing their attention to the edge of the reef. The yellowtail snapper bite has been good, which makes for great action and a great dinner! The Kalex also released a sailfish earlier in the week, so hopefully we start seeing a few more of those. They also had a suprise catch of mahi near the reef. It definitely is getting late in the season for the mahi, but a couple other boats have caught 1 or 2 as well. I wouldn't count on them though as your target species.
The king mackerel are starting to show up as well, which means fire up the smoker. They make a great smoked fish spread. I haven't seen too many big ones yet, but a fair amount in the 5 to 10 lb range. If you want a big a pull don't be afraid to try for a bull. The bull sharks have still been around the reef and wrecks the past week. They are mean fighters and take a lot of strength to catch. On the Bn'M we caught and released a couple up to 200 lbs on a 1/2 day a couple days ago.
There's also been some action with bonitos, barracudas, and jacks while on the offshore trips. They're all good fighters, but mostly catch and release. Yesterday we got out on a daytime swordfishing trip, and finally had quite a bit of action. They were feeding funny and most got away, but we still managed to catch 2 broadbills around 60 lbs, as well a nice queen snapper on the way out.
The Fall months can be some of the best to swordfish, and this was the most action we have seen on a single trip the past year.
On another note a couple weeks back was the 16th annual Keys Kids Fishing Derby, and there was 104 anglers in it! There's both offshore and backcountry divisions, as well as 3 age divisions, all for kids 10 years and younger. Capt. Aaron had his 3 kids out on the Pretty Work, and wound up with two 1st place finishes and a 2nd place finish. And Capt. George on the Reel McCoy had his son out and they had a 2nd place finish. Great job Guys!
Tight Lines,
Capt. Nick Stanczyk
And to update all the people who showed love and wished the best of luck to "Lil Bud" the cat, he's healing up slowly but surely, and starting to take small steps. He's still "behind bars" for another 6 - 8 weeks, and will be getting checked out by the Vet a few more times too. Gunner from the Kalex also brought him his favorite snack, a little fresh tuna!
