Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
October continues to be an active month for fishing, both offshore fishing and reef fishing. There's been a little bit of everything, and each day has been a little different. Last weekend the Relentless had a rackful of mahi two days in a row, with fish from 3 - 15 lbs.
The last couple of days has been a little tougher on the mahi, with a couple boats catching a few and some boats not finding them, but today the Redfish was in the right spot when they boated a 40 lb bull! They also had a few schoolies.
The blackfin tuna have still been fairly active on the hump, as well as some skipjack tuna. The sharks have hungry though and eating quite a few of them. However, the Fearless had a handful the other day including one monster blackfin that weighed 30 lbs!
Back on the Reef the Kalex has been catching plenty of yellowtail snapper for dinner, as well as a few cero mackerel, and released a sailfish today. A couple days ago the Reel McCoy spent the day on the reef and released 2 sailfish and had a few cero mackerel and yellowtail snapper for dinner as well.
The sailfish should move in with more consistency as the weather cools down and the cold fronts pass through. There's also been some mutton snapper on the reef and wrecks as well as a few king mackerel.
Each day can be different this time of year, as it is a "transisitional" period, but there's always something to catch here while deep sea fishing in Islamorada! I think the mahi will be hit and miss in the upcoming weeks, but I'm sure we'll see a handful still around, especially if the wind stays from the east , or south east direction. The reef should be active with king mackerel, snappers, groupers, barracudas, and sailfish as winter nears.
Aboard the Bn'M II today I had the Australians out to learn how to daytime swordfish, and learn they did! We managed to catch 3 broadbill swordfish and lost the 4th after an hour! We tagged and released 2 broadbill around 50 and 60 lbs, and then caught another around 150 lbs. The biggest one got away, but they will keep us working hard again tomorrow.
November is one of the best months to swordfish, and lately it's been the best we've seen all year! So if you ever want to try your hand at big game fishing, you should consider trying for a broadbill.
Till Next Time,
Capt. Nick Stanczyk
