Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It's been pretty gusty the last couple of days here as we've had fronts creating lots of turbulence in the air. Today was blowing 30 knots and yesterday about 25. Tomorrow looks pretty windy as well though by Thursday it is suppose to come down. That doesn't mean you can't get out there on the water. Capt. Rick Stanczyk ventured out today and his anglers got into a mess of mangrove snappers. They got their limit of mangs up to 18 inches. The local hotel is preparing them a feast as I write this! You don't always have to run very far and you can stay in protected water which is one of the great things about fishing in the islamorada backcountry. We also had some action with lemon sharks. Before it started blowing Capt. Ben Ekblom had reported good fishing in the everglades back around flamingo. They had redfish and snook action, one nice snook of 33 inches! He also had a good half day yesterday doing similar fishing with the mangrove snappers. Live pilchards are the ticket for snook fishing still though a big shrimp will work in most cases too. As the water temperatures start to get cold in the winter, live shrimp is usually all one needs for backcountry fishing. Capt. John Johansen reported some action out front on the patch reefs too before it got too windy, groupers, porgies, and hogfish starting to show up and as it cools down this fishing gets better and better.
