Wahoo and Squid in Hatteras

 | By xfernal on 11/23/2013 12:00:00 AM | Views (2402)

On Friday we fished offshore Hatteras and caught a nice Wahoo out past Rock Pile in 300' of water. We found a nice temp break that went from 67 on one side to 70 on the other. The water color was a dark green and blue green on the break. The grass line we worked was real nice and thick with big mats of grass and debris.

We pulled a spread of Ballyhood Banchee lures (aka Wahoo Cowbells) and Eye Catcher Lures Outlaws all day. Using the Fishing Predictions on the Home page, we set our spread to be Purple on starboard, and Blue on port. All bites of the day came on Blue/Silver Outlaws from Eye Catcher Lures... exactly what the predictions recommended!

On the way back in we also caught false albacore, and saw numerous scattered schools most of the trip back in. Some of the commercial guys were fishing for king mackerel around 15 miles out. Looked like a couple were on the line as we passed.

At the docks, the fleet said there were good catches of dolphin with a few gaffers and scattered wahoo. Most of the fleet went North, while we went South for a shorter run.

While cleaning the wahoo, we saw some guys catching squid right in Hatteras Harbor Marina. I watched them fill a 5 gallon bucket of them in just 30 minutes. They already had a fish basket full of nice sized squid, including trolling sized ones as long as my arm. Most of the catches came from small light weight squid jigs. I caught a few of them myself on a homemade jig using glow beads and treble hooks, since the bait and tackle stores were all out of jigs.

After talking with a local, he said every November, a week or so around the full moon, you can go from marina to marina and catch bucket fulls of squid. I had never seen schools of squid before, so it was very neat to watch them. They look like a school of fish and are just as fast.
