Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
The fishing has been good both out front on the patch reefs and in the backcountry. Many guides are reporting great catches of snook around flamingo and the east cape area. Capt. Rick Stanczyk had several days in a row with many snook, and a handful of redfish, black drum, and plenty of trout too. Capt. Chris Daly had reported similar fishing with the same cast of usual winter time fishy characters. Today things seemed to change a bit back there in the backcountry with the weather, but most the guides reported still being able to pick away at fish. Capt. John Johansen and Capt. Skip Nielsen had both reported excellent patch reef fishing the past few days. For a couple days we had flat calm weather and some big schools of permit showed up on the patches. They both had caught some permit yesterday, as well as Capt. Jeff Beeler today had a couple nice ones out front. Also on the pathces have been plenty of snapper, yellowtail, grouper, porgies, and hogfish. All these fish including the permit can be caught on small jigheads with light leader and shrimp. For the bigger bottom fish cut ballyhoo, pilchards, or pinfish do the trick. Just leave one on the bottom with a circle hook and 1 oz sinker! Capt. Skip also had some great barracuda action out further around the lighthouse when it was a nice flat calm day. Big cudas were eating live ballyhoos which is a blast if you want an exciting fish! We do have some more cold weather on the way this evening and tomorrow night is getting even cooler. However the fish in the backcountry seem to be well adjusted now and the temperatures aren't dipping extremely low, so the deeper holes and creeks should still provide good fishing for those venturing back there. The patch fishing should continue to stay pretty good too. We did try mackerel fishing for a bit the other day and the water was crystal clear out there and slow moving so not much going on. Further in the gulf we've been having some nasty red weed which usually shows up later in the spring but is here early - and unfortunately that makes the fishing out there very tough as it tangles around your baits constantly.
Capt. Rick Stanczyk
