1/19/14 Offshore Fishing Report for Islamorada

 | By Seamus on 1/17/2014 5:15:58 AM | Views (130)

It was an exciting weekend here at Bud n' Mary's Marina in Islamorada. The Cheeca Lodge Sailfish Tournament took place on Friday and Saturday, and 27 boats entered the competetion. The bite was decent for some boats, and very slow for others. We were very happy to have two of our Captains take 1st and 2nd place! Capt. George from the Reel McCoy, ran a private boat he works on part time, team Swagger, and they finished in 1st place with 10 releases. Right behind them was Capt. Paul aboard his charter boat Relentless with 9 releases. Three different boats had 7 releases, one being the Catch 22, but 3rd place went to the first boat with 7 which was a private boat from Islamorada. Today the sailfish bite was a little tough, with the Bn'M II releasing 2 fish, and the Pretty Work and the Reel McCoy each releasing 1. We knew it was just a matter of time until we saw some nice cobias on the dock, and today was the day! Both the Relentless and Cloud Nine had 5 keepers, from 15 - 35 lbs for the most part. Yesterday the Pretty Work went out for a couple hours and young Marcus caught a massive 61 lb cobia! When fishing for cobia it takes lots of patience, we search for stingrays inside the reef, and you won't find them every trip, but if you put your time in the hunt can be well worth it! Another interesting story was from the Miss Islamorada Party Boat a few days ago, where they caught a sailfish and then hooked a big bottom fish. After a long fight came up a pre historic sawfish! An unusual catch while reef fishing! The fish was released after a quick pic. The yellowtail snapper bite was a little tougher with the cold air and water temps we had the past few days, but it should pick back up once the weather warms up a little. The cero mackerel finally showed up in big numbers and lots of them were reported on the edge of the reef today as well as on the patch reefs. Give us a call in the marina when you're ready to get out on an Islamorada Fishing Trip and we'll set you up! 305 664 2461
