Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It's been a warm February here so far while fishing in Islamorada. The past few days we've had outstanding weather, with light winds and lots of sunshine. Most of the boats are still focusing on fishing the Reef right now, but we'll see more boats venture "offshore" once we hit March. Last Wednesday was the Poor Girls Sailfish Tournament, which is a fun one day event for the ladies. Lots of locals enter the tournament, as well as some out of towners. It's a charity based tournament benefiting "Casting for Cats", Shriner's Children Hospital, and the Marathon Wild Bird Center. Out of the 35 registered boats we were happy to see 10 different boats/captains from Bud n' Mary's fishing the event. Overall the fishing was a little tough for most the boats, but we were happy to see The Reel McCoy finish in 3rd place with 3 sailfish releases. Throughout the rest of the week we've seen a handful of sailfish released each day in the marina, but most of the boats that have been successful have been putting a lot of time in towards fishing for the sails. A lot of boats have had 1 - 2 releases, but the Catch 22 released 5 one day, as did the Relentless, and the Pretty Work released 4 another, so you never know which day will be yours! Last week the Gold Digger also had an exciting morning releasing 4 sailfish and catching a blackfin tuna for dinner. There's been a few king mackerel still around the reef and wrecks, and some cero mackerel around the patch reefs. The bottom fishing has been producing yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, and a few mutton snapper. The Bn'M had a big 18 lb mutton the other day! There's been a few suprise mahi and blackfin tuna while live baiting outside the reef as well. We also released some barracuda and amberjack which make for good action during the day. One day last week I took a broadbill swordfish charter and we managed to get 2 bites and tag and release 2 fish. They weren't big, but they were our angler's first so he was very happy. When the weather cooperates you have a shot at swordfish any month! The catch and release shark fishing should also pick up in the next few weeks, so if you want to land JAWS let us know and we'll give it a shot! Give the marina office a call at 305 664 2461 when you're ready to book a trip!
