Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
We had a minor front come through over the weekend, but not much of a temperature drop just a few degrees though it did give us some northerly wind directions. Didn't seem to affect the tarpon much as there have still been swarms around. Capt. Bill Bassett reported seeing near a thousand fish move through on the ocean side flats the other afternoon. He has had some tarpon action in the backcountry the last couple days, and also reported catching a big bull shark and a keeper size cobia off of that shark around flamingo. Capt. Jeff Beeler had caught 2 out of 3 tarpon the other day on fly too. Today Capt. Jim Willcox caught a big tarpon and blacktip shark in the backcountry on a morning half day trip, the other day he had some action with some snook and redfish in the everglades cape area too, plus some big jacks attacking one morning. Capt. John Johansen had some Swedes out last week they had good action with sharks on light tackle and also caught a few cobias as a bonus. Capt. Rick Stanczyk had reported good tarpon fishing last week too most days. Fish have reportedly been eating the fly very well, better than bait even, though as we move more into the spring the fish will really start to go nuts on mullet. Today Capt. Rick Stanczyk reported good action out on the patches with snappers, yellowtail, groupers, cero mackerels, hogfish, and porgy. If your wondering about early season tarpon fishing it is a great time to go right now as long as the weather stays warm. Lots of fish around both near islamorada and in the backcountry.
