3/8/14 March Backcountry Islamorada Fishing Report

 | By Seamus on 3/8/2014 10:04:34 AM | Views (124)

Well we've experienced another mild front here.  Temperatures dropped into the low 60s last night and the water cooled a little bite.  Not drastically cold but it did make things a little tough in the backcountry today.  I had Glen Gilmore and he was down to catch some bigger stuff.  We were able to put him on a couple 'mud marlin', a goliath grouper, and some sharks.  We tried tarpon fishing this afternoon but no luck, I don't think the tarpon liked the dropped in temperature.  Also some good rod bending early with ladyfish and trout.  Yesterday snapper fishing was good around the islands we had our limit of nice 12 inch mangrove quickly, then we caught several big jacks and a nice 60 lb tarpon to finish our half day.  The day before that the tarpon were really going nuts we caught 3 out of 10 tarpon in about 2 hours of fishing.  The incoming tide has been better for them with the live mullet.  Capt. Skip Nielsen had a great day today on the deeper patches he reported catching a couple nice 25# permit, several hogfish, groupers, and various other fish.  Capt. John Johansen has had shark and tarpon action to report in the backcountry the last week.  Capt. Ben Ekblom has also been catching some tarpon around town here locally, and had good mangrove snapper fishing too.  Capt. Chris Daly had some nice mangroves a few days ago and several juvenile groupers around some of the islands, all caught on live pilchards.  Finally a few days ago Capt. Mark Hlis had a sightfishing SLAM with his angler Daniel Van Clief.  They caught 12 lb permit, 12 lb bonefish, and a 100 lb tarpon.  A great day of fishing for an angler who hadn't done so in several years!  Tarpon fishing should get better as the weather gets warmer, this afternoon it was flat calm and gorgeous so hopefully they will be a little happier tomorrow!

Capt. Rick Stanczyk
