Blackfin Tuna and Mako Sharks off Hatteras

We ran out close to 280 Rocks before we set out the lines and headed North. From the inlet to around 50 fathoms we were in 44 degree water. The break was the hardest one I have ever fished. It was 50 degrees in the green and 70 in the blue and you could have thrown a rock from one side to the other.

Within sight of the break, but before we crossed over and in 44 degree water still, we caught a nice 20+ pound Blackfin.

As we crossed I saw a big Thresher shark but he wasn't interest in our offering. Throughout the day we must have seen over a hundred Hammerheads with many of them 12 or more feet in length.  We also saw dozens of 10-15' brown sharks that I think were Dusky sharks, but never could get close enough to confirm.

We also saw multiple Mako sharks skyrocket out of the water and somersault 10+ feet in the air. I had seen video of them do this, but never in person and it was quite a sight to see. We caught a couple of them, and one was invited to dinner tonight.

You could not have paid me to take a swim yesterday.

We also saw what we think was a Whale Shark. The dorsal fin must have been 3' out of the water. It was as nearly wide as the boat and definitely a lot longer.

We caught a lot of False Albacore on the blue side and in 70 degree water. We ended up arguing who was going to reel in the next one a couple of times.

We also saw a Humpback whale on the ride in.

Here are some more pictures and video of the Blackfin and Makos:
