Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Well the backcountry and inshore fishing in Islamorada has remained strong the last several days. It has been on the windier side with winds swinging from the east, south, and today southwest. Usual stuff for the spring time here. Stiff breezes but the nice thing about the backcountry fishing is you can run 90% of your trip in 2 feet of water to stay out of the chop and stay dry. Also there has been plenty of good fishing close to home. Capt. Ben Ekblom, Capt. Rick Stanczyk, and Capt. Mike Venezia all, have reported tarpon action close to home the last several days. The fishing has been decent for this time of year producing a decent handful of bites in your fishing time and most trips are getting at least a fish to the boat. The tarpon have been getting bigger too it is now not uncommon to have 100 lb fish on the end of your line. Capt. Rick yesterday had an exceptional day he released 4 tarpon between 60 and 100 lbs, and even got a 5th juvenile while we were catching mangrove snappers for dinner. Capt. Ben has had some good fishing in the afternoons too releasing multiple fish on his last couple of trips. Capt. Mike had a good day in the backcountry a few days ago too releasing roughly a dozen snook and dozen black drum. Capt. Dave Sisung and Capt. Bill Bassett have reported very nice size mangrove snappers in the bay, eating both pilchards and chunks of dead bait. Capt. Bill also reported catching 1 out of 2 tarpon yesterday, the one landed was 140 lbs a real slob! Elsewhere in the backcountry the fishing in the bays has been getting better, lots of trout, ladyfish, jacks, snappers, etc... Sharks have been numerous in the backcountry along with other large sea creatures. Currently the tarpon fishing has been better around town than in the everglades for the most part, though as the weather stabilizes I'm sure they will show back up strong back there - likely on the first calm day we have when the water can really warm back up and fish can get happy.
