Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Port Phillip Bay is still worth a look around for anglers still keen to catch snapper. While most of the 'pinkies' have been on the smaller side of things, there have still been fish 1 - 2kg floating around. Bigger hooks and tougher baits are a good way of sifting through the plague of smaller fish. A few larger fish in the 3 - 5kg range have been caught out deeper but the numbers certainly aren't huge.
Customer John went out from Carrum during the week to try and land a decent snapper, and he was successful! John anchored up in the 18m depth area after playing with his sounder and started berleying. Using pillies John managed a nice bag of flatties along with a 4.4kg snapper. The snapper came on the bite just after sunrise and the flatties bite throughout the morning.
Down south around Mornington there has been the odd snapper caught, but compared to this time last year the fish are much slower. Again fishing in depths of 18 - 19m have been the key, with baits of pilchard and squid doing the damage.
