We've had some wind here the last few days while deep sea fishing in Islamorada, but we still have plenty of boats get out each day. We had a cold front pass through a couple days ago, so the winds followed the typically pattern west and then to the north yesterday, and back to the east late today. A lot of the boats just fished the shallow patch reefs with the 20 - 25 knot winds, and they still had plenty of action in 15 - 30' of water. That's a great thing about Islamorada, even when it gets windy, we always have a back up plan and try to make the best of the weather/fishing conditions. While patch reef fishing there was yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, cero mackerel, grouper (released until May 1st), and a few other species all caught. Today more of the boats got offshore a little further, and it was nice to see some decent catches of dolphin (mahi). A couple boats had from 10 - 15 fish, mostly schoolies, but I did see a nice Bull-head that was close to 35 lbs. I think we will see some more mahi this week with the wind settling in the east direction. There's been a few sailfish around each day as well, with a couple boats out of the fleet releasing a fish or two. Further out on the humps the tuna have still remained difficult, but there's been plenty of almaco and amberjacks. There's also been some big sharks feeding on them, so if shark fishing is something that interests you, give the captain and heads up and he might be able to hook you up with JAWS! The Catch 22 got out on two daytime swordfish trips the past week. The first trip was tough, with one light bite, but they did release a broadbill the second trip and report missing a few other strikes. We are still hoping we get a strong northeast current while we have these east winds, because almost every year in the spring time for a couple days the "tailing" condition lines up where sailfish migrate through heavily, surfing down the waves with the tips of the tails sticking up out of the water.
