Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Happy Easter to everyone! It's been a busy week here while deep sea fishing in Islamorada, and I'm finally getting a chance to update everyone on what's been biting here in the Florida Keys. We are in the midst of spring now and the variety pack is still happening. We had a couple very weak cold front pass through the past week, which means the wind direction has swung all around, but for the most part it didn't affect the fishing too much. As we near summer a lot of the fish do cooperate better with more stable weather patterns, but that's one thing we'll never be able to control. The boats have been fishing both the reef as well as offshore. The Boats that have been focusing on the reef have been doing bottom fishing and some live baiting. The yellowtail snapper bite has been good overall, which is great rod bending action, and also great for dinner! There's been a few mutton snappers and mangrove snappers in the mix too, and I really think we will see a lot more mutton snappers here in the upcoming weeks. The reef groupers have been biting too, including reds, blacks, and gags, but they still have to be released until May 1st. While live baiting there has been a couple sailfish spread out amongst the fleet, as well as the occasional mahi (most are further offshore in the deep water), as well as a few mackerel, a couple tuna, and lots of litty tunny (aka bonito). On the wrecks the permit are still active, and many boats have released a fish or two using live crab for bait. Permit are great fighters and exciting gamefish. The boats that have been going further offshore have been finding mahi almost every day, although a couple days have been a little tough. There's been quite a few juvenile mahi, which we call "shakers", since we shake them off next to the boat, but the boats that are patient and put in the time have had anywhere from 10 - 30 keeper fish most days, with fish from 3 - 15 lbs, and there's been a few "slammers" (fish over 20 lbs), including a couple big bull heads up to 35 lbs. There been a few "football" blackfin tuna spread out, but hopefully they school up on the humps soon, because it's always nice to swing by and pick up some fresh sushi when you're way offshore. Both offshore and on the reef/wrecks there has been some big sharks caught and released too, so if shark fishing in Islamorada is something that interests you, let us know. This coming week looks like great weather, with light winds as off now, so if you want to try deep sea fishing in Islamorada, give us a call at the office and we'll find a great boat for you! 305 664 2461
Also don't forget that May 17th we are hosting the "Gotta Luv Them" charity dolphin (mahi) tournament at Bud n' Mary's Marina and it's going to be a fun event, so either bring your own boat or book a charter boat and sign up for some great competition. Find out more at http://gottaluvthem.org/
