Pic of the Week!

On Monday morning, Jarrad Van Beem decided to kick it old school when chasing pink snapper off Dunsborough and bring his Alvey snapper reel aboard. Very cool, you don't see that much nowadays!

Shhhhh, secret spot!
What a vibe! South West guru Tom Miller has been having great success fishing vibes in the depths off Bunbury for demersal species. This dhuie is just one of Tom's awesome catches recently. Nice work!

Mat headed out with Evolution Fishing charters to the Exmouth Gulf in around 18m of water to catch this beauty using fresh locally sourced Shark Bay squid 🦑 Nice bluebone!
Broome catches
CLAW-some! Ellen Stapleton wrangled this mud crab from a secret spot somewhere near Broome. 👏

Boats

A 150kg black marlin landed off Barred Creek was among several other smaller marlin caught in local waters this week. Sailfish have also continued be encountered offshore together with Spanish mackerel, longtail tuna and mack tuna. Reef fishers have generally been doing well on red emperor, saddletail seaperch, blue lined emperor and coral trout in 30m to 50m of water. Sportfishers have been using an assortment of soft plastic and hard-bodied lures to catch small giant trevally, queenfish and bluenose salmon within Roebuck Bay.

Shore based

Holidaymakers have enjoyed catching queenfish and small brassy and golden trevally at Entrance Point. There are plenty of whiting along Cable Beach and Roebuck Bay. The banks of the local creeks have been producing mixed catches of threadfin salmon, bluenose salmon, mangrove jack and estuary cod. There are still barramundi and cherabin being caught within the Fitzroy River, however catches of both species have waned in recent weeks following a decrease in water temperatures.

Jack at Jack's! Young fisher Bodie scored this thumper of a mangrove jack measuring in at 44cm near Jack's Creek just south of Broome. Legend in the making, great work!
Exmouth catches
Not the intended target, but an awesone result! This longtail tuna came as a surprise to Jess Sutton when she was chasing a cobia that was following a manta ray. A solid capture, well done!

Boats

Yellowfin tuna in the 10kg to 15kg range continue to be found in very big numbers offshore together with quite a few striped and mack tuna. Black marlin and sailfish have been encountered in the respective depths of 100m and 50m. Dolphinfish can be found near the Exmouth's Exmouth FADs and there still seems to be a few wahoo around. A 21kg wahoo was landed by a spearfisherman one day this week. Spanish mackerel have been caught on bibbed minnows and rigged garfish trolled north and south of Tantabiddi. Coral tout to 6kg have been caught on deep-diving minnows within Exmouth Gulf.

Jim Bastow couldn't be happier with this solid mackie - the Spaniards are out in good numbers with a liking for trolled minnows and rigged gardies.

Shore based

Spin and fly-fishers have been doing well on spangled emperor, queenfish, small trevally and dart at the west coast accesses. Bigger giant trevally, fish to 30kg, have been caught on large poppers and stick baits at Oysters, VLF Bay and Bundegi Beach. There are lots of yellowfin bream being caught at the marina while squid have also been caught from the rock walls there as well as at Learmonth and Bundegi jetties.

Scott’s Species – barramundi, a wonderful estuarine and inshore sportfish

How's this lovely barramundi Steve Hart caught in the East Kimberley!? Picture: Western Angler

Barramundi are an iconic species of northern Australian waters, with many fishers dreaming of catching a 1m trophy barra. After last Sunday's latest barra release at Lake Kununurra, it's worth taking a look back at Western Angler editor Scott Coghlan's barramundi edition of Scott’s Species for an in-depth look at this wonderful species.

Kalbarri catches
When Robbie Leck had the chance to sneak out for a fishing session, he caught himself a nice baldchin groper. Solid effort!

Boats

Those who managed to head offshore when the wind and swell backed off somewhat last weekend had to travel wider than usual to find cleaner waters where Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna were lurking within. Reef fish including baldchin groper, pink snapper and coral trout are ordinarily found closer to shore following a period of rough weather. Expect red emperor, Rankin cod and dhufish to be between the 30m and 40m depths northwest of the river mouth.

Shore based

Mulloway continued to be caught in the lower reaches of the Murchison River as well as along some of the beaches including Red Bluff and Wittecarra Creek. Tailor have been turning up some mornings and evenings along the coast. Garfish and herring are a chance in the morning at Red Bluff. There are chopper tailor being caught near the jetties and pens and yellowfin whiting along the downstream shallower parts of the Murchison despite the murky water.

Geraldton catches
Silver ghost! Keen angler Michael Triantopoulos was more than happy with this Mid West mulloway.

Boats

Launching your boat can be difficult, especially if you're a first-time boat owner. If you're a new skipper, watch our educational YouTube video on launching your vessel below:
Dinghy and kayak fishers have been picking up a mix of bread and butter species including herring, whiting, pike and squid within the inshore reef line. South West Bank and African Reef have been producing dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper when conditions have permitted. Spanish mackerel and tuna have mostly been caught in waters west of Pensioners Bank and near the Abrolhos Islands.

Shore based

Mulloway have continued to be landed between Flat Rocks and the Greenough River mouth as well as at Southgates and the beaches north of Drummond's Cove. Tailor have been caught in similar areas together with school sharks and the odd dart. The beaches close to town that are free from seaweed have been providing some nice catches of sand and school whiting. Squid can be picked up at the northern side of the marina at night.
Lancelin catches

Boats

There have only been a few windows in swell and wind for smaller trailer boats to safely leave Lancelin bay. Boats able to take advantage of the opportunities found pink snapper and Samson fish on the inshore reefs. Baldchin, dhufish and breaksea cod were found along the coral patches 30m depths. Inside the bay schools of pike, skippy and herring have been among the cray boat moorings.

Shore based

The beach gutters have finally formed some good deep holes both north and south of town. These spots will be expected to provide opportunities to swim artificial lures or baits for greenback tailor and mulloway for the next few months. Several mulloway and pink snapper to 85cm have been caught by beach casters north of town. The town's jetty has been reliable for a feed of tailor and herring at night under the lights.

One million reasons to fish Lake Kununurra for trophy barramundi!

Here are some of the 170,000 barra released into Lake Kununurra last weekend through the Lake Kununurra barramundi stocking program. Click above to watch some of the action from the event.

It was great for Recfishwest to be a part of last Sunday’s momentous community fish stocking event at Lake Kununurra as the one millionth barra was stocked as part of an ongoing stocking program. About 150 fishers and holidaymakers and Fisheries Minister Don Punch joined us and the Lake Kununurra Barramundi Stocking Group for the big occasion along the lake’s banks at Lily Creek Lagoon. Click here to read more about Sunday's community release event and watch a fantastic video of the release event.

Trophy barra, like this one Paul Cunningham enticed, are caught on a farily regular basis from Lake Kununurra!

Esperance catches

Boats

Dinghy and small boat fishers have been picking up lots of big squid, with some featuring tubes to 44cm, in and around the seagrass areas inshore. Herring, skippy and sand whiting have also been common. Stickbaits and poppers worked near the islands have been enticing Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish at times. Those who travelled wide scored nannygai to 50cm, queen snapper and breaksea cod.

Shore based

Salmon have continued to appear along many of the beaches in very good numbers. Some surf fishers have reported catching, and releasing, up to three dozen salmon a day at some spots not too far from town. The Taylor Street Jetty is holding herring and squid in good numbers. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour is producing King George whiting, herring, flounder and black bream. More black bream can be found in the local lakes. Some nice gummy sharks were recently landed at Fourteen Mile Beach, Dunn Rock and Thomas River.
Great Southern catches
This 45cm black bream from somewhere in the Great Southern tested Evan Banazis' light set-up! 😎

Boats

Reef fishers who managed to time the weather right and head offshore scored pink snapper, breaksea cod and dhufish. Better catches of reef fish have been coming from waters off Peaceful Bay and Cheynes Beach. The deeper inshore waters, which are less murky than the shallower areas, are producing better catches of King George whiting and squid. Herring and juvenile salmon are also about the inshore parts in numbers alongside the odd skippy and flathead.

Shore based

There are still salmon being caught at some of the spots that are somewhat protected from the big seas and swells, which included Shelley Beach, Lowlands and Normans. Herring remain in very good numbers right along the coast and there are skippy to a kilo being caught at some of the reef areas. Tarwhine are common west of Albany while some of the calmer bays have been producing King George whiting. The King and Kalgan rivers, like many of the systems situated along the southern coast, are very discoloured and really only offering black bream to those who are prepared to use bait. Estuaries are the lifeblood of fishing on our south coast, with mulloway, black bream, herring, whiting, fleathead and plenty of other popular species on offer to recreational fishiers in family-friendly safe and accessible waters. To find out more, click below:
South West catches
Young gun Lucas billett tempted this lovely pink snapper while working a soft plastic off Bunbury.

Boats

Herring have been caught in the shallows off Bunbury and Busselton this week, especially with the introduction of burley. New to fishing? Watch our instructional YouTube video below to help catch yourself a feed of herring:
Anchor and burleying has been producing the goods for pink snapper fishers within Geographe Bay. Skippy and small dhufish have also been picked up by this method. King George whiting catches are improving along the broken ground off Eagle Bay and Quindalup. The deeper seagrass areas where the water has been cleaner has been producing bigger catches of squid.

Shore based

Pink snapper and mulloway were caught from the beaches located between Quindalup and Busselton during this week’s stormy conditions. Very few would have fished this part of the West Coast this past week, however tailor, mulloway, gummy shark and snapper are often caught from shore following a period of rough weather. Herring and skippy are reliable targets from Cape Naturaliste's headlands, while the same species have been found along Bunbury's beaches.

Freshwater

Freshwater angler Giordano Gervasi loves chasing brown trout in skinny streams in the South West.

As many freshwater fishers know, environmental changes — including annual declining rainfall in WA’s south — pose a risk to the South West freshwater fishery. That’s why Recfishwest is calling freshwater anglers to complete a quick 10-minute survey to play their part in shaping the trout fishery’s future. Click here to complete the survey.

Maxing up marron - 50,000 more stocked in South West dams

Last week, Recfishwest joined Aquafarms at Waroona Dam to release 20,00 one-year-old marron as part of an exciting stocking program backed by the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF). Read more here and also watch our YouTube video below.

Mandurah and surrounds
Lachie Ramm made use of the Berkley 6" paddleshad and grubs in the darker colours to score himself a nice pinkie while fishing off Mandurah last weekend.

Mandurah

This week's Mandurah section is brought to you by Lachie and the team at Tackle World MiamiThere has been some good pink snapper and dhufish caught out deep when the weather has allowed people to get out safely. A lot of snapper have also been caught on the inside of Five Fathom Bank in shallow water the days following a storm with the dirty water from Mandurah to the northern end of Bouvard Reef. A few whiting have been caught in the Peel-Harvey Estuary at the moment in deeper water. However, the flats are not producing any fish due due to plenty of freshwater in the system.
Perth catches
HORSE 🐴 🐴 🐴 Anthony Axcell with an absolute horse of a mulloway. Caught at "spot x", this would have made the night in the cold worth it.

Boats

Opportunities to head offshore were limited this week as a result of the rough weather. Those who managed to pick a break in the rough conditions found pink snapper to be in good numbers south of Rottnest Island. Samson fish and the odd dhufish were also caught in these waters while baldchin groper have mostly been caught along the coral areas off Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. Emilio and Giuseppe Orifici have been doing well on King George whiting to an impressive 55cm and sand whiting to a solid 35cm in 10m to 20m of water off Cottesloe. Looking for a good session of squid? Look for seagrass meadows in Cockburn Sound, an excellent choice for families with smaller boats. Squid have been also been caught in bigger numbers along the seagrass meadows off Fremantle when the water clarity has been greater.

Shore based

Dozens of pink snapper were caught from the southern and northern rock walls during the recent spell of rough weather. Coogee Marina, Woodman Point, South Mole, North Mole and Hillarys Marina rock wall were among the spots where snapper in the 4kg to 8kg range were landed this week. Mulloway are a chance at both moles as well as Fremantle Harbour considering the freshwater exiting the Swan River. The deeper channels formed along the beaches by the rough conditions would be worth trying for tailor, mulloway, pink snapper and gummy sharks. King George whiting catches have been improving along the Fremantle rock walls. If you're looking to learn how to do some shore based squidding, check out this comprehensive guide on our ilovefishing website.
