Tight Line Report ~ News

Two weeks ago we were catching 20 -30 Snook on a half day charter.  The middle of March is one of the best times to fish in Tampa Bay.  That is if it was a normal March!  Temperatures have been unseasonably cold and the winds have been very high.  The current water temperature is 65 degrees and everything has changed.  The bite shuts down when we have cold-water temps and it’s not safe or fun to be on the water with high winds.  This won’t last long and spring fishing will be back in full swing in no time.   IT’S THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR FOR FISHING IN TAMPA BAY!
Until the water warms up, fish warm water areas, residential canals, rivers, and power plants.  These areas are very productive in cold-water situations.   I recommend using shrimp and artificial baits.  Work your bait a little slower as cold water slows the bite.  It is also wise to fish the warmer part of the day.
Bait
Schools of Scaled Sardines and Threadfin Herring have arrived on the grass flats and in the middle of the bay.   These schools of bait attract the wide variety of fish we are so blessed to pursue.   Snook, Redfish, Spotted Sea Trout, Mackerel, Snapper, and more will attack these baits as they work their way up Tampa Bay.  Yes, It’s “Prime Time”  - my favorite time to fish in Tampa Bay!
PRO TIP !
When the weather keeps you off the water it’s great time to re-spool lines, service your reels, reorganize your tackle and do the little things that make a difference when fishing kicks into high gear.   This will help ensure you don’t lose the BIG ONE!
