Fishing Report
14/03/25
There have been good reports of wahoo being caught off Perth, Mandurah, Rockingham, Mindarie and Two Rocks over the past couple of weeks, especially when trolling behind inshore reefs or along contour lines where there are steep drop offs. With this fish able to reach speeds around 80kmh, boats have been known to hook wahoo even when trolling at 15-22 knots, but a regular speed of 4-6 knots means you're still in with a chance and also improves your odds of a mackerel or tuna.

Broome catches
Just another Lake Kununurra metrey this week, with @matty_cox having the fishing trip of a lifetime out in the East Kimberley.

Boats

Fishing was a bit hard in the local barramundi competition last weekend. Plenty of good fish were showing up on sounders but they were reluctant to bite. Nevertheless, good barramundi and blue-nosed salmon to 83cm were caught in Dampier Creek and an 80cm barra was pulled from Crab Creek which was good enough to win the junior section. Barramundi and decent threadfin salmon were caught at the Fingers. There has been little tuna or Spanish mackerel activity in Roebuck Bay but tripletail have been taken around the moorings. Bluebone have been caught off Entrance Point, while a few boats that headed offshore caught mainly blue-lined emperor. Rain looks to set in over the coming week but the winds are looking favourable for getting out on the water.

The first fish of 2025 was a beauty for Chris Saunders @fishing_with_chriso off Broome, with this plump and healthy blackspot tuskfish.

Shore-based

Water levels have started to fall in the Fitzroy River and the lower section around Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool has produced some good fish. The Town Beach Jetty has offered small trevally and queenfish as has Entrance Point, which has yielded bluebone as well. Mangrove jack have been taken at Willie Creek. Light winds over the coming week are conducive for fishing a range of locations, while the rain and tides should see a fair bit of water moving through the local creek systems.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
They might be one of the most commonly caught fish when bottom fishing around Exmouth, but Rankin cod are certainly up there as one of the tastiest as well. The 205g Triple threat from @snapbait_aus proved too tempting for this specimen this week.

Boats

On the west side billfishing has been steady in the lead-up to GAMEX with blue marlin raised from 450m depths onwards and black marlin, striped marlin and sailfish active in 150-200m. Wahoo, dolphinfish and yellowfin tuna have been among the bycatch, while dolphinfish have also been active at the FADs. The west side’s 20-30m depths have been producing good Rankin cod and coral trout, along with small red emperor, while Helby Bank has offered cobia and Spanish mackerel. Sizeable spangled emperor have been caught in the lagoons. Fishing has been quieter at the islands with Spanish mackerel, Rankin cod and tomato cod the main catches. Water clarity in Exmouth Gulf has been poor but crews fishing around creek entrances have been getting decent queenfish and mangrove jack, while the fringe of Cooper Shoal has produced cobia, the odd Spanish mackerel and plenty of school mackerel. Often clearer water has been found close in, which has led to some reasonable squid catches. The forecast is looking glorious from Sunday onwards with light winds and warm weather.

Shore-based

The crew from @shallowwatersafaris got Neil on to a couple of nice permit in the flats of the Gulf this week. If you're wanting to enjoy some red hot fishing in the shallows (fly or spin) these guys provide great advice and tours.

The catch of the week in Exmouth Gulf has to be the sailfish that snaffled a Richter plug and was landed at Learmonth Jetty on a 10kg outfit. The jetty has also offered bream and mangrove jack around the pylons and some big queenfish and golden trevally have shown up at times. Mangrove jack have also been in the town marina and at Bundgei, where bait schools have brought in trevally and queenfish. As well as mangrove jack the marina has yielded small spangled emperor, bream and cod, while the outside wall has been patrolled by queenfish, school mackerel and bonito. Most of the flats in the gulf have held whiting. Good, spangled emperor have been landed at Tantabiddi, while up at Dunes Beach spangled emperor, the odd bluebone and big trevally and queenfish have been active. Land-based fishers have plenty of options over the coming week as the wind and swell drop right off.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing jumped on the Spanish mackie wagon this week and they have been smashing lures in good numbers around Red Bluff, the Blue Holes and the Sand Patch over the past week or so, with the 30m depths working best.

Boats

Plenty of bait schools have been about and Spanish mackerel catches have been steady despite the dirty water on both sides of town. Most of the action has been south of town towards Bluff Point. Crayfishing has been reasonable. Wind and swells look to spike over the weekend but thankfully Tuesday onwards should hold some weather windows in the morning to duck out the river mouth. Otherwise, the Murchison River is always worth a crack at bream and whiting for some light-tackle action.

Shore-based

Anglers have been bagging out on tailor in the mornings at Red Bluff and decent mulloway have been taken at Chinamans. On the other side of the Murchison River good-sized yellowfin whiting have been taking baits and surface lures near the river mouth, while quad bikers have been catching school mulloway and decent tailor. The cliffs and coastal gorges have produced mainly tailor and skippy. In the Murchison, bream have been in good numbers up past the marina and they have been swimming with some decent cod. Chopper tailor have been making their way well up river in the evenings as well. Mud crab catches have been steady around the marina and sizes have been good, and a few blue swimmer crabs have been taken closer to the river mouth.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Conditions have been very sloppy for most of the week which has limited a lot of activity, with even crayfishers having a hard time pulling their pots. Spanish mackerel have been around though, with some taken from Mid Reef onwards, from the lumps towards the Easter Group at the Abrolhos and at Wreck Point but sharks have been a problem at all these locations. Billfish have been reported in good numbers at the back of the Abrolhos Islands. The weekend will see some wind and swell roll in, but Tuesday onwards should see the conditions start to ease.

Shore-based

Weed has made most beach fishing difficult. A few squid have been caught off the handicapped platform at the Batavia Coast Marina in the evenings and mulloway to 60cm have also been landed. The rock wall running parallel to the beach has produced cod and tailor on some evenings. A few blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up from the Fishing Boat Harbour. Monday afternoon onwards is looking best for land-based fishing, though the swell over the weekend may bring in a bit more weed.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Garrit joined the Tailored Treks morning tour this week and landed a solid Samsonfish while casting a fresh herring bait. After a quick photo, the fish was released in great condition to fight another day.

Boats

The 20m depths have been consistently producing good catches of sand whiting, with squid and prawn baits proving effective for a straightforward and satisfying haul. Skippy and herring are on the rise in both size and numbers throughout the bay, offering plenty of action. The deeper weed beds continue to deliver quality squid and impressive large snook. For those trolling along the back of the beach surf, tailor have been actively biting in the mornings, providing an exciting start to the day.

Shore-based

Tailor have been showing up in excellent sizes, with fish over 50cm found around the reef breaks and gutters. Herring are also making a strong appearance, with plenty of ‘bull’ class fish around 30cm along the beaches. Evenings have produced encounters with mulloway and sharks of various sizes, keeping things exciting for night fishers.

However, recent swells have caused significant beach erosion, making driving challenging and, during high tide, nearly impossible. The swell has also stirred up a lot of weed, but with calmer conditions expected after this Saturday, fishing is likely to improve as the weed consolidates.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
Billy Vibart @fishingbv managed to rustle in this kraken of a squid in shallow water close to town when the conditions were peachy, while @jesse.smithson landed this 99cm mulloway that was only (a tad painfully) 200g shy of the Esperance Land Based Fishing Club record.

Boats

Good numbers of Samsonfish and nannygai have been taken at Figure of Eight and Boxer islands, while sizeable queen snapper have been landed at Observatory Island, and tuna have been prolific at Cull Island and Leg of Lamb. In closer, big squid have been caught in good numbers at Cook Rocks. Big sand whiting and decent King George whiting have come from Wylie Bay, while Esperance Bay has held lots of herring and squid. Unfortunately conditions are looking less-than-ideal for this weekends Esperance Archipelago Offshore Angling Classic – Tuesday onwards is looking much more favourable out on the water.

Shore-based

Mulloway to a metre have hit the sand at Israelite Bay, while gummy sharks and bronze whalers have been abundant at Poison Creek. Thomas River has held skippy to 6kg and small gummy sharks, while salmon and skippy have been active at Dunn Beach. The beaches west of town have been full of salmon schools heading towards Bremer Bay with the 14-Mile to Munglinup stretch fishing well. Salmon have been at Fourth Beach and Salmon Beach first thing in the mornings, while squid, herring and garfish have been at the Taylor Street and Town jetties at night. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has been holding King George whiting, while bream to 45cm have been pulled out of Woody Lake. Wind and swell might make beach fishing difficult over the weekend but next weekend should hold some better conditions.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
It ended up being an epic bream session for Callum Dowell @outback_breamer_baits only five minutes from his home, which included this 40cm+ specimen in the shallows.

Boats

Big squid, sand whiting and modest-sized King George whiting have been the main catches in King George Sound, particularly on the eastern side, while drop netters have been doing OK on blue swimmer crabs in both Oyster and Princess Royal harbours. At the islands tuna and bonito have been consistent and a few salmon have poked their heads up as well. When weather windows have popped up pink snapper and the odd dhufish have been taken on the coral ground, while a crew deep-dropping in 240m out from Cheynes landed a big hapuka this week. When fishable, Bremer Bay has produced heaps of breaksea cod, along with harlequin fish, pink snapper, queen snapper and nannygai. The front currently rolling through is likely to see unfavourable conditions for boating until Monday onwards at the earliest.

Shore-based

Just to get you a wee bit excited...this enormous salmon school was spotted on the South Coast recently! Get your gear ready and make sure you stick to the beaches - you'll catch more salmon this way, it's much easier to do, and it is a significantly safer option than the rocks. A great aerial snap from @kwillo89.

Scoop netters have done well on blue swimmer crabs in Oyster and Princess Royal harbours, while 60-70cm mulloway have been caught in the Kalgan River and at the King River Bridge. Both rivers have held good numbers of bream. A bream of 43cm was pulled from the town marina this week but herring, small skippy and squid have been the main fare there. Herring, squid and small King George whiting have been caught at Emu Point, while Frenchman Bay has offered squid and small KGs as well. Salmon schools have started to show up and fish have been reported from Bremer Bay, Nanarup, Lowlands, Fosters, Norman and Shelley beaches and at Salmon Holes, which has been crowded. Decent bream have been in Denmark’s Wilson Inlet while Ocean Beach has held heaps of tarwhine, mostly small, and herring.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

Boats

Pelagic action has been good out from Bunbury with small Spanish mackerel and shark mackerel in a range of depths but often quite close in. Watching the sounder and keeping an eye out for working birds has been key to finding them. In Geographe Bay tuna and bonito have been active. Windy days have made King George whiting harder to find out from Bunbury and in Georgraphe Bay but a few have come from the 15m depths. Squid have been in good numbers in both areas and a few cuttlefish have started to show up as well. Abbey Beach has been one of the better squid spots this week. Drop netters have been doing very well on blue swimmer crabs right throughout the Leschenault Estuary but only in the early mornings and late afternoons. The middle of the day has been dead. Trolling for tailor in the estuary has been worthwhile and bull herring have been among the bycatch. Today’s inclement weather will see a bit of wind and swell sticking around on Saturday, but Sunday onwards will be much nicer on the water.

Shore-based

Beaches close to Bunbury have been fishing well. Chopper tailor and herring have been the main catches at Back Beach but a few pink snapper have been taken there as well. Dalyellup has held heaps of herring and few chopper tailor, while squid and cuttlefish have been landed at Dalyellup and also Forrest and Peppermint Grove beaches. The Bunbury Cut has yielded chopper tailor, herring and big tarwhine, while Buffalo Beach, has produced good tailor at times. Tailor have been active at Myalup and Preston beaches where a few school mulloway have been landed. In the Leschenault Estuary scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been hard work, while getting a feed of yellowfin whiting hasn’t been easy either, with most tings hitting small vibes, except on hot days when surface lures come into play. Squid have been in good numbers at Busselton Jetty and small yellowtail kingfish and bonito have been taken at the end. Bream fishing in the Collie River has been quiet but good catches have come from the Blackwood River. On the salmon front it appears mostly resident fish have been taken at Gracetown, Bunker Bay and Smiths Beach.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@freshwest_ landed and released this lovely wild rainbow trout this week along with some plump redfin perch. As we head deeper into Autumn and a bit of rain returns, the stirred up rapids and oxygenated water will bring the freshwater fishing to life.
Redfin have been the main species targeted and once again deeper sections of the Collie River and Wellington Dam have produced. At Harvey Dam good redfin have been picked up on the troll, while at first light they have often been active on the flats, especially if there is structure nearby. Soft plastics have been the lures of choice. Rain throughout the South West should see a bit of water movement in the river systems over the coming days.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Pelagic activity has cooled a little but with a line of blue water appearing behind the Five-Fathom Bank is showing heaps of promise. This week most crews have fishing on the Five and using burley to catch King George whiting and skippy with schools of KGs active during the day on the 30m line. Inside the Five has been thick with sand whiting. The Peel Harvey Estuary has been producing good numbers of 35-40cm tailor, along with decent skippy and loads of herring and a few juvenile salmon. Drop netters have been doing well on blue swimmer crabs deeper into the system, with the science platform in the Harvey a hotspot this week. Consistent winds are expected over the weekend, hopefully dropping off by Monday afternoon for better boating conditions.

Land-based: Tailor catches fired and good fish were taken from White Hills and Tims Thicket and at San Remo and Silver Sands this week. Herring, sand whiting and small yellowfin whiting have been active on the beaches also. Multiple pink snapper and a small dhufish were taken by a drone fisher this past week, probably south of town, while a couple of just-sized pink snapper have been caught at the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut which has held a few squid on the incoming tide around the bridge, along with herring and chopper tailor. A few tailor have been taken under the lights at the Mandurah bridges. In the estuary, scoop netters have continued to get a feed of blue swimmer crabs but yellowfin whiting chasers have had to work harder and the fish have been small. Boundary Island and Len Howard Reserve have been the better spots for tings. Good bream have been caught in the canals and marinas, while dab netters have been doing well on school prawns in the estuary. Consistent winds are expected over the weekend, hopefully dropping off by Monday afternoon for better boating conditions.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pelagic species continue to fish well with a few Spanish mackerel still about, dolphinfish and wahoo at the FADs, yellowtail kingfish on Middle Ground between Garden and Carnac islands, a black marlin sighted. in 30m on the edge of the Five-Fathom Bank and heaps of bonito in Cockburn Sound, which have been swimming with some decent tailor. Herring, King George whiting and squid have been plentiful in Mangles Bay, and inside of Garden Island. Best results on squid have been on dark 3.5-sized jigs, fished in 6m-plus depths. Chunky skippy have been active in 5m depths with Shoalwater Bay, off Point Peron and out from Rockingham the better spots. Blue swimmer crabs continue to be caught in big numbers by drop netters in Cockburn Sound. Sunday’s weather is the better of the two over the weekend, with conditions only set to get better for boat-based fishing into next week.

Land-based: Palm Beach Jetty, Rockingham Jetty and the Ammo Jetty have held heaps of scaly mackerel along with good numbers of herring and chopper tailor in the evenings. Bonito have shown up at these locations, and at Woodman Point, and have been enthusiastically taking small metal slices and stickbaits. At Point Peron a few land-based squid and herring have been caught and decent skippy have been pulled from the deeper holes. Tailor continue to fish well on local beaches with Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy the standouts. Use metal slices in the mornings and mulies or scaly mackerel baits in the evenings. Herring have been active at these locations, along with sand whiting and a few school mulloway, mainly after dark. Long Point has held most of these species, along with yellowfin whiting and some decent flathead. Yellowfin whiting have also shown up at the grain terminal. Flathead have been among the herring and whiting catches at the Penguin Island sand spit. Blue swimmer crabs have been taken in good numbers in 1.5-2.5m by those swimming out from the Rockingham foreshore.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
One of the best summer's for pelagics in Perth's history is spilling over into autumn and it's not slowing down. Former @compleatanglernedlands staff member Harrison got on the marlin wagon this week and nearly 130 marlin were caught during just the Marlin Cup and Blue Marlin Classic competitions over the past few weeks, with marlin even being landed in just 30m depths. You're also in with a good chance of landing a wahoo when trolling at the moment, as @deebeezii discovered near Rotto.

Boats

Billfish activity has slowed around Rottnest Island and getting to the FADs has been difficult for many crews chasing dolphinfish and wahoo. Squid fishing has been good out from Leighton towards Haul Bank in 7-20m with 3.5-sized jigs with weighted nose cones recommended. Tailor catches have been good around Stragglers and a few bonito have been about the northern reefs and out on the north side of North Mole towards Cottesloe. Spanish mackerel have been taken from Fremantle up to Two Rocks with the Three-Mile Reef and Rottnest Island among the better spots. The bays at Rottnest have offered a few squid and yellowtail kingfish and tuna have been taken at the West End. Trolling for chopper tailor in the Swan River has been hard going and blue swimmer crab catches slowed a little in the lower reaches this week. Expect better weather for fishing on Sunday onwards once the current weather front fully passes through.

Shore-based

Jayson Spencer @onlyfish_js managed to crack the tricky code of landing some cracker giant herring this week in the Swan River. This fish loves to jump and spit the hooks, so keep your rod tip low to keep the pressure on the line.

Garfish have been plentiful at North and South moles along with a few herring. Tailor and bonito action has slowed down at North Mole but one or two just-sized pink snapper have been caught. Fremantle Harbour has held held scaly mackerel and a few yellowtail but little else and even the rock walls along Mews Road have been quiet. Tailor chasers have blamed the lack of a sea breeze for their meagre catches this week but herring have been plentiful from Leighton right up to Floreat. A few better tailor have been taken from the northern beaches, with Quinns fishing OK, along with a few small pink snapper which were landed mainly by drone fishers. Tailor action in the Swan River has been slow as has scooping for blue swimmer crabs. Good yellowfin whiting have been taken late at night around East Fremantle and school prawns have been in good numbers for dab netters. A few school-sized mulloway have been taken at Canning Bridge and Mt Henry Bridge, while smallish giant herring have been active around East Perth and Maylands and also in the Swan River’s middle reaches. Bream have been in reasonable numbers at the Causeway, East Perth, Optus Stadium and up to Guildford but they have been mostly small. A few flathead have been caught at Burswood and a couple of nice ones have shown up at Applecross and Canning Bridge. Soapy mulloway have been in the upper reaches with many feeding on small school whiting around the Maylands area.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
