Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
I never thought I would be here. Alone, in the middle of the Caribbean, gearing up to jump into the ocean with a snorkel strapped to my face. Yet, here I was—standing on the deck of a boat, gripping the rail a little too tightly as Captain Joe gave me an encouraging nod.
This was supposed to be my break from routine. My best friend Mark had visited Belize last year with his wife, Sarah, and when he returned, he wouldn’t stop talking about how incredible his full-day boat charter with Bent Hook Adventures had been. "You’ve got to do it," he insisted. "Even you—the guy who refuses to try anything remotely adventurous—will love it."
I wasn’t convinced. I had never snorkeled before. Heck, I barely even swam. But after months of endless emails, meetings, and staring at screens, I finally gave in. A solo trip to Belize sounded like the perfect reset. And if I was doing this, I was going all in—a full-day Belize boat charter with snorkeling, fishing, and island hopping.
I had no idea what I was in for.
A Rocky Start to Snorkeling
The morning was perfect. The sea stretched endlessly before us, calm and glassy, reflecting the sky in every shade of blue. Joe, our captain, was a native seafarer with years of experience, and he had a way of making even the most nervous traveler (me) feel at ease. Alston, the deckhand and dive guide, handed me my snorkeling gear and gave me a quick tutorial as we approached Hol Chan Marine Reserve—one of Belize’s most famous snorkeling spots.
I hesitated at the edge of the boat. This wasn’t my thing. The moment I lowered myself into the water, my heart raced. The mask felt too tight, the snorkel too foreign, and suddenly, I wasn’t sure I could breathe properly.
"Relax," Joe’s voice carried from above. "Breathe slow, trust the gear."
I forced myself to take a deep breath. The first few minutes were dizzying—the unnatural feeling of breathing through a tube, the weight of the water around me, the distorted sound of my own breath.
Then, slowly, my panic faded.
As I adjusted, I started to really see. The reef was alive—coral in brilliant oranges and purples, schools of fish darting past like living rainbows. A sea turtle glided effortlessly below me, its shell catching the light as it moved through the water with slow, rhythmic strokes.
A massive stingray emerged from the sand, its wings stirring up tiny clouds as it soared beneath me. I reached out instinctively—not to touch, just to feel closer to this strange, beautiful world I had never known existed.
I never thought I would enjoy snorkeling. But at that moment, I never wanted to leave.
Fishing: A Battle Against the Fighters of Belize
After the exhilaration of snorkeling, it was time for something a little different—fishing.
I had been fishing before, but as Joe handed me a rod, he smirked. "Let’s see if you’re ready for Belizean fish," he said. I should have been suspicious.
I cast my line and waited. And waited.
Then—BAM!
The rod jerked so hard I nearly lost my grip. My arms tensed as the reel screamed, the fish below pulling with more force than anything I had ever fought before.
"Hold on, don’t let it run too much!" Alston called.
I tightened my grip, reeling in as best as I could, but this thing wasn’t going down without a fight. Every time I thought I had it, the fish would dive deeper, dragging the line with it.
Finally, after what felt like a small eternity, I saw a flash of silver—a stubborn snapper, thrashing against the pull. The moment I hauled it onto the deck, my arms burned from the effort.
"Not bad for a first-timer," Joey said with a laugh.
Just then, someone else on the boat hooked something big. Another battle ensued—but this time, just as the fish neared the surface, a dark shadow shot up from below.
In a blur, a barracuda stole half of the catch.
The line went slack.
There was a beat of silence before we all burst into laughter.
"Welcome to fishing in Belize," Joe chuckled.
Secluded Islands and a Taste of Caye Caulker
After fishing, we headed off to explore some of Belize’s hidden gems.
Joe took us to secluded, untouched islands, where the water was so clear you could see straight to the sandy bottom. I waded in, letting the cool waves wash over me, feeling more at peace than I had in years.
At one stop, I even swam out to explore a small cove—something I never would have done before today. This trip was changing me in ways I hadn’t expected.
Then, finally, we made our way to Caye Caulker.
"Go Slow"—the island’s motto—was painted on a wooden sign as we docked. It felt like stepping into another world. No traffic, no stress, just colorful beach shacks, reggae music, and the scent of grilling seafood in the air.
The Bent Hook crew got to work preparing our beach BBQ. Our freshly caught snapper, seasoned and grilled to perfection, was served with coconut rice, plantains, and homemade tortillas.
Sitting there, barefoot in the sand, sipping a cold Belikin beer, I realized something:
This was exactly what I had been looking for.
Reflections on the Ride Back
As we cruised back toward San Pedro, I leaned against the rail, watching the sunset turn the sky into a masterpiece of gold and crimson.
Joe handed me a fresh drink and clinked his glass to mine. "So, how’s that break from routine working out for you?"
I laughed. "I think I could get used to this."
I had come to Belize to escape my busy life, to take a break. But I left with something more—a newfound appreciation for adventure, for slowing down, for stepping out of my comfort zone.
And the best part?
I couldn’t wait to tell Mark and Sarah that they were right.
