Broome catches
Muddie mission completed for the @reefchiefaustralia crew in our Kimberley this week!

Boats

A few crews headed about 40km offshore and did well on Rankin cod and coral trout this week. In Roebuck Bay sharks have been a problem but the odd northern mulloway has been mooching around the ledges and tripletail have been active around floating debris. A sizeable Spanish mackerel was landed in the bay this week, but they haven’t been in red hot numbers. Off Barred Creek and Entrance Point, decent bluebone have been landed. Dampier and Crab Creeks have held threadfin salmon and barramundi, with both systems also holding plenty of mud crabs. Barramundi and mud crabs have been caught at the Fingers too but sharks have also been a problem there at times. For the best tips on how to avoid shark bite-off click here. The water should be generally flat this weekend but storms are starting to roll in from Sunday and lightning is expected for a majority of this coming week, so take caution. Thursday onwards is looking to go completely bonkers on the swell and wind forecast so batten down the hatches.

Shore-based

The rocks along Kavite Road and at Entrance Point have been producing good numbers of bluebone, while at the Town Jetty large baitballs underneath the structure on high tide have attracted big numbers of trevally and queenfish, which kids and holiday-makers have been having a ball on. At night a few barramundi have been pulled from the pylons close to Broome. Water levels in the Fitzroy River are almost back to normal and barramundi have been widespread but often small. Langi Crossing, the Cuttings and Telegraph Pool have all produced good numbers of barra and they are still great fun even on the smaller side. Lake Kununurra out in the East Kimberley produced loads of metre-plus barra this week if you’re after the bigger specimens.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Kyle Poole @salty_horse with one of the coolest looking fish in the sea. Wahoo are one of the tastiest pelagics out there and this fish was caught on the west side of Exmouth which has been buzzing for this species this week.

Boats

GAMEX competitors have been doing well on black marlin and sailfish in the 150m depths on the west side, while also finding blue marlin out wide. It’s been a great competition so far with the 60 boats and 240 competitors making it the biggest turnout for many years. Tuna, wahoo and dolphinfish have also been among the bycatch. Those targeting bottom species on the west side have done well on goldband snapper in 100m, while good Rankin cod have been caught between 30m and 70m. Spanish mackerel action has slowed, but spangled emperor have been caught in the lagoons at Tantabiddi and Winderabandi. At the Muirons, golden trevally, coral trout and spangled emperor have been the main catches, along with the odd Spanish mackerel. In Exmouth Gulf blue-lined emperor have been in good numbers on the shoals, where decent coral trout and the odd giant trevally have also been landed. Once again school mackerel have been plentiful in the Gulf, while the odd Spaniard has been sighted and one or two cobia were taken. The conditions should be very pleasant for the last day of GAMEX tomorrow and should remain decent for Sunday. Expect choppy conditions, humidity and rain from Monday onwards.

Shore-based

The crew from @shallowwatersafaris certainly know how to take some cracking snaps after putting their clients on to the fish! Exmouth Gulf producing the goods again this week with this solid trevally on fly.

The flats at Town Beach, Bundegi and Learmonth have offered plenty of plump whiting, while trevally and queenfish have been taken at Learmonth Jetty and the Bundegi ramp, with mangrove jack holding around structure at both these locations and also in the town marina, especially after dark. Small trevally and queenfish along with bream and cod have also been in the Exmouth marina, while a youngster also landed a just-sized coral trout there this week. VLF Bay, the Lighthouse and the Mildura Wreck have offered spangled emperor, but bluebone catches have slowed. Giant trevally and big queenfish have turned up at the tip of the Cape at times. Tantabiddi has offered a few spangled emperor on mulies and surface stickbaits.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
@nickihuntfishing with a lovely Spango. This species apparently doesn't freeze too well, so if you decide to take one home this delicious species is best eaten on the same day.

Boats

Spanish mackerel activity has slowed a little, but good fish have been taken at the Sand Patch between 13-20m, along with the odd bonito. Big tuna have also been taken north of there in 30m but weed has been a problem further out. Most Spanish mackerel seem to have been taken north of town, with deeper diving lures and trolled gardies on gang hooks working best. Crayfishing has been up and down but a lot of octopus have been turning up in pots. The next few mornings until around midday are looking inviting for the boaties albeit with a swell sitting at around 2m.

Shore-based

Balloon fishers have caught tuna and Spanish mackerel at Wagoe, while cliff fishers at Island Rock and Pot Alley have encountered big tailor and a few baldchin groper. Big tailor have shown up at the mouth of the Murchison River, which has been teeming with mullet. An angler casting poppers at the mouth was smoked by some big tailor estimated at 80cm but managed to land a few 50cm ones. A couple of metre-plus mulloway were taken from the river mouth last week, while big tailor have also been caught at Back Beach. Wittecarra and Red Bluff have held mainly chopper tailor around the 40cm mark. Across the Murchison River school mulloway and decent tailor have been taken by quad-bike fishers and good yellowfin whiting have been caught on the river flats on that side. The Murchison River has also yielded bream to 30cm and cod from the marina upstream, while a couple of mulloway runs occurred at the Sand Spit this week. A good mix of blue swimmer and mud crabs have been in the system with the blues closer to the river mouth. The mornings are looking decent for land-based fishing throughout this next week.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
A cracker of a coral trout speared by the @onpoint_spearfishing crew at the southern group of the Abrolhos Islands. These guys frequently have spots open up for spearfishing trips to the islands so make sure you give their page a follow if you want to keep tabs on when you can jump in the drink and have a prowl off their vessel!

Boats

Spanish mackerel have been active towards African Reef and they have also been around Mid Reef and off Coronation, but sharks have been a nuisance. Make sure you have the lures closer to the boat and try holding your rod so you can react faster. It also pays to free spool your reel and let the mackies outrun the tax man. They have been at the Abrolhos Islands too, especially around Wreck Point. A crew targeting billfish at the Abrolhos last weekend raised four marlin but landed only a sailfish. The weather is looking rough and uninviting for the boaties until Wednesday morning next week, with some very hot days also expected.

Shore-based

Herring numbers have picked up locally and they have been really thick down at Dongara. In Geraldton, the north wall of Batavia Coast Marina has held good numbers up to 30cm. The jetty in the Port Dension marina has offered plenty of yellowtail scad to 30cm an hour either side of sunset. Back in Geraldton the Dome Cafe rocks and the north side of the marina and its accessibility platform have offered whiting, chopper tailor and the odd squid, as well as herring. When weed has been scarcer, Drummond Cove to the north side of the community hall has held lots of herring and whiting and reasonable chopper tailor. North of Drummond towards Coronation Beach saw pink snapper to 65cm landed. Chopper tailor have been caught at Tarcoola Beach and the odd mulloway to 70cm has been landed in the Batavia Coast Marina. The groyne at the Sail Inn has held herring and chopper tailor. Blue swimmer crab catches are expected to improve in the Fishing Boat Harbour and the Batavia Coast Marina.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
The crays have been abundant around the shallow ledges again and Peter Fullarton managed this solid haul from just one drop close to town! Drop your pots and have a troll for pelagics while the getting is good.

Boats

There have been plenty of baitfish schools attracting tuna, mackerel and bonito, providing great entertainment for boat fishers ducking out only a short distance from shore. There were reports of schools in 20-25m depths. Inside the bay recent swell flushed through some clean water and fishing has greatly improved, with great catches throughout the week casting and trolling lures for squid, herring, skippy, flathead and tailor. Peter Fullarton got out and had a troll throughout this area in his boat and the action was non-stop, you can check out Peter catching all these species on YouTube here. Lobster potters have been pulling full pots as well, with a lot more of the lobsters in the ledges along the near shore. Lancelin Angling Club are heading out on a club day to the FAD’s and will be providing a safe escort for the long haul out there on Saturday. At this stage the weather looks okay for the trip out and a tail wind on the return later in the day, so feel free to join them to try your luck on pelagics! Monday through to Thursday next week looks much calmer.

Shore-based

Beach casters have been battling the conditions due to the weed being widespread in the wash, with several stretches of beaches impassable by 4WD. If you are heading up to Lancelin this weekend keep an eye on the beach conditions ahead and jump on the back tracks before it gets too narrow as the 4WD recovery businesses have been kept busy removing bogged cars from the waters edge. With a bit of poking around you can still find a fishable spot. The catches have been mostly herring and chopper tailor with a shark or two turning up in most sessions. Drone fishers found it a bit easier to fish over the weed with 200-300m offshore drops finding snapper in good numbers. At Seabird, drone fishers have been catching some dhufish and baldchin groper.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
@kjell_hensen_ has swapped the northern territory fishing for a beautiful salmon off a picturesque beach near Esperance yesterday. Make sure you do as he does and keep the sand between your toes when targeting this fun species this autumn.

Boats

The Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club’s Archipelago Offshore Angling Classic was held in pretty ordinary conditions last weekend. The biggest fish landed was a 21kg Samsonfish, which scored the lucky angler a staggering $24,000 in prizes for the heaviest fish which included a $2,000 Simrad package! Nannygai to 3kg were also caught in good numbers. In Esperance Bay competitors in small boats caught gummy sharks in the 10-15kg range. Outside the comp, good sand whiting were caught in Wylie Bay in front of Lion Island, while big queen snapper were landed at Observatory Island. In Esperance Bay tinny fishers have been catching squid with hoods up to 40cm in 5m depths. The next four mornings should see calmer stretches of easterly winds with a swell around 2m so this should provide some good windows for the boats to duck out.

Shore-based

Mulloway have been in good numbers at the Back Beach in Israelite Bay, while gummy sharks in the 10-15kg range have been taken at Cape Arid. Roses Beach has held mulloway to a metre and big skippy to 6kg, while the surf beaches west of town have been thick with salmon schools. In town, Blue Haven Beach has held sand whiting and big bull herring, while the port viewing area and Bandy Creek Boat Harbour have produced decent King George whiting. Skippy and snook have been caught off the rocks at Wylie Bay, while the Town and Taylor Street jetties have yielded squid and garfish at night. Bull herring have been active at Taylor Street Jetty around sunset. Stokes Inlet has been the pick of the bream spots.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
@levi_bowman_fishing might only be 8-years-old but he already has 7 years of fishing experience! A nice skippy that came aboard following a trip off Augusta this week.

Boats

Dirty water from the big deluge that swamped the region has made fishing in King George Sound difficult. Middleton Beach and Oyster Harbour have pretty much shut down, but Princess Royal Harbour has been okay and blue swimmer crabs have been pulled from there by those dropping nets. The water has been much clearer out at Limestone Head, where squid and King George whiting have been the main catches. Around the islands, crews have been picking up tuna and bonito. On the coral ground big queen snapper have been taken when conditions have allowed, while at Peaceful Bay nannygai and pink snapper have been caught. Most of Saturday and early on Sunday morning don't look too bad on the forecast with calmer easterly winds and a 2m swell.

Shore-based

Salmon reports have become much more consistent with big schools sighted particularly east of town around Bremer Bay. Salmon have been biting at times at Salmon Holes, Sand Patch and Little Beach and a couple of anglers geared up for skippy and herring found themselves out-gunned at Ledge Beach when a big salmon school turned up hungry. They managed to land a few on the light gear although they suffered many bust-offs and went through a stack of lures! More salmon catches have been reported at Lowlands and Ocean Beach, where herring and tarwhine have been in good numbers. Most local beaches have offered plenty of herring, while at Cheynes a few skippy have been mixed in with them. Oyster Harbour, Emu Point and the King and Kalgan rivers have been plagued by dirty water but blue swimmer crabs have been scooped in Princess Royal Harbour. The rocks at Frenchman Bay have produced herring, small King George whiting and squid when clear water can be found.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Persistence paid off for Whitey's Tackle & Camping staff member @harry.fisho! First time testing out this new rod and first time targeting land-based snapper and it all went to plan, with his first land-based beauty going 600mm on the Dingle Dangle. Great work Harry!

Boats

Offshore action out of Bunbury was curtailed by the weather this week, but Geographe Bay was a good option for those chasing herring, skippy, King George whiting and squid. A few cuttlefish also turned up. In the Leschenault Estuary blue swimmer crabs have started to thin out but herring and chopper tailor have been plentiful, so it’s been worthwhile towing a small lure behind the boat between net pulls. Early on Saturday morning looks best for this weekend, from midday on Monday next week right through until at least Thursday should see hot and flat conditions out on the water so we recommend making the most of trolling for pelagics during this time.

Shore-based

Pink snapper came on the chew this week, delighting anglers from Preston Beach all the way down to Peppermint Grove Beach south of Bunbury. Both droners and casters shared in the spoils with the best bite times being late evenings. Vexed Dingle Dangles adorned with pieces or fillets of tailor or herring have done a lot of the damage. Fishers at these locations have had no trouble picking up herring and chopper tailor, either for the table or snapper bait. Sand whiting have also been in the mix. At Back Beach and Dalyellup, squid and cuttlefish have been within casting range and herring and chopper tailor have been plentiful. Busselton Jetty missed out on the pink snapper action, but a few Samsonfish were taken from the deep end, otherwise fishers contented themselves with herring and squid. Salmon reports have come from Bunker Bay and Yallingup, but it is likely they are resident fish schooling up. In the Collie River giant herring either side of 35cm and soapy mulloway have been the main catches. In the estuary yellowfin whiting activity has tapered off in numbers and sizes. Way down south salmon chasers fishing the Warren Beach and Yeagerup stretch have had to make do with skippy, herring and a few tailor.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

The base of Wellington Dam is known to hold some nice fish in the shadows of the rocks and @robbie__leck managed to rustle out this healthy brown trout along with a few small rainbows.
It’s been slim pickings on the freshwater front with redfin perch of modest sizes the main catches in Wellington Dam and the deeper sections of the Collie River. With the water level so low, it could be worth targeting the pools in Glen Mervyn Dam. A few redfin have been taken on soft plastics at Harvey Dam, especially around the middle sections. Robbie Leck managed to enjoy a great session on brown and rainbow trout at the base of Wellington Dam this week and as the rains start to arrive, the trout should begin to fire up in better numbers.
Mandurah and surrounds
This cracker of a marlin landed by Ed this week off Mandurah took out Tackle World Miami's weekly $50 voucher prize for best catch of the week! With more hot days arriving next week, you can expect the billfish action to continue so make sure you're trolling whenever you move around as some big captures have been reported even around inshore waters.

Boats: There has been plenty of pelagic activity with a couple of bigger boats heading into the southern end of the Rottnest Trench and hooking and raising marlin. Another crew got stuck into some big wahoo there, while at Seahorse Reef an angler trolling for Spanish mackerel with pretty high-end gear hooked something unstoppable. Inshore waters have been a little murky, so it has been worth heading out wider. Around the Five-Fathom Bank yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish have been active, while in clearer patches behind the Five some nice King George whiting and chunky skippy have been caught. Inside the Five sand whiting have been in good numbers. Clearer patches of inshore water has been found north of town where squid have been active. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary blue swimmer crabs have moved closer to the ocean entrances and getting a feed has been a little harder for drop netters. Chopper tailor and loads of herring have been caught by fishing the systems channels and drop-offs. Early on Saturday until around 11am is looking best for the boaties this weekend but Monday through to Wednesday should see hot and flat conditions out on the water.

Land-based: In the Peel-Harvey Estuary yellowfin whiting have become a bit fussy and the sizes haven’t been flash either. Canals and marinas in the system have produced bream and a 55cm pink snapper was caught in one canal on bream tackle this week. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been better around Dawesville and Wannanup. The traffic bridges around Mandurah and the Dawesville Cut have fished well for squid in the mid-afternoons, while herring and whiting have been taken at sunset and sunrise. There have been whispers of a 70cm pink snapper being landed near the main bridge in town, so it could be worth having a big rod out at the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut and nearby beaches. Tailor fishing has been steady on most beaches with the northern side of town fishing a little better and also offering a few school mulloway. Silver Sands has also fished well for these species. At White Hills, decent chopper tailor have been hitting lures at times.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: The good run of pelagic activity has continued with Spanish mackerel, tuna, bonito and yellowtail kingfish a chance anywhere from Cockburn Sound to Garden Island and the Five-Fathom Bank. The inshore waters have also offered plenty of good tailor, especially around exposed reefs, and decent skippy have been pulled up from the lumps and around the Garden Island causeway.  Squid, herring, sand whiting and King George whiting have been at their usual haunts with Mangles Bay, inside of Garden Island, Parmelia Bank and Safety Bay among the better spots. The squid mostly have been holding in 5-6m. Drop netters have continued to do well on blue swimmer crabs in the Sound. Saturday is looking nice for a send on the boat and next week should be nice and flat on the water.

Land-based: Tailor have been in reasonable numbers along the local beaches with Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point among the better spots. Herring and sand whiting have been active during the day and at the Penguin Island spit the sandies have been mixed in with a few yellowfin whiting and flathead. Palm Beach, Rockingham and the Ammo jetties have held chopper tailor and herring, as did Woodman Pont. Scaly mackerel have been plentiful at these locations also. Blue swimmer crabs have been abundant in 2m for those prepared to swim out from the Rockingham foreshore.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
The cracking run of metro Spanish mackies continued off Perth this week with Matheus Marrano landing this beauty on a trolled garfish south of Rottnest. We have had dozens of metro mackie snaps sent in during the past month so start trolling ASAP as this action is expected to continue right into April.

Boats

Those making the most of the weather windows and getting out wide have encountered a range of pelagic species, but not quite in the same numbers as previous weeks. Marlin sightings in the Rottnest Trench have dropped off, but tuna and yellowtail kingfish catches have been steady at the West End of Rottnest, along with a few Spanish mackerel. Crews trolling past the FADs have landed big wahoo, while small dolphinfish have been caught all around the FADs with bigger models a bit further out. Spanish mackerel have been in better numbers south of Rotto along Duffield Ridge, while they have shown up off Ocean Reef also. Most of the northern inshore reefs have held good numbers of tailor and a few bonito. Tailor have also been plentiful off Fremantle and especially at Mewstones. Squid have been in good numbers out from Fremantle in the 5m depths and also in the bays at Rottnest. Rottnest’s inshore waters have held lots of herring and a few King George whiting, while the Three-Mile Reef has produced KG’s as well. Mostly it has been sand whiting dominating catches in the inshore waters and at the Windmills and off Cottesloe. In the Swan River the unsettled weather seems to have fired up blue swimmer crabs with good numbers being caught either side of Canning Bridge and in Freshwater Bay, Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach. The deeper sections around the middle sections of Maylands and Bayswater are also worth trying for mulloway. Early on Saturday looks best this weekend for the boaties but all of next week should see very hot and flat conditions out on the water. We strongly recommend having a troll for the mackies, billfish and wahoo that are doing the rounds when those conditions arrive.

It's not just mackies going ballistic off Perth! After years in the making, Mitchell McClelland @straighthookers finally joined the wahoo club and this beauty was speared just behind Carnac Island!

Shore-based

One of the chunkiest mulloway pulled out of the Swan River this year for @harry_fowler_fishing! As said best from Harry - it pays to put in the extra footwork through grass and mud up river to find great fish like this.

At least two big mulloway were landed from jetties in the Swan River this week with Canning Bridge and Claremont Jetty each producing models over the metre mark. Soft plastic lures have been recommended and the Causeway and Narrows could be other locations worth targeting.  Otherwise, the river has been fishing slow, especially in the lower reaches where flathead, flounder and tailor have been hard to find. Even the late-night yellowfin whiting chasers have been returning meagre hauls. Bream have been consistent though, from the Causeway up river, and Burswood, Maylands, Garratt Road Bridge and Guildford have produced a few, along with the odd nice flathead. A couple of small giant herring were landed in the middle to upper reaches. In Fremantle Harbour herring, yellowtail and scaly mackerel have been the main catches. The Fremantle Moles have produced a few just-sized pink snapper, a few herring and some decent tailor, but the bonito schools seem to have swum off. The South Fremantle rock walls have produced herring and garfish when burley was used. Pink snapper have been caught mainly by drone fishers on the northern beaches, while most of the beaches in that area have also offered herring and tailor, with Mullaloo fishing well. One or two dart have been among the bycatch. Some decent tailor have been caught from the reefs at Cottesloe and Leighton, while Floreat and City Beach have held good numbers of herring and some better sized tailor in the mornings. Early on Saturday morning is looking like the best land-based window this weekend.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
