Fishing Report
11/04/25
The salmon action has started to spice up around Albany and they have started trickling into our South-West region, but east of Albany is where the most consistent captures are still occurring, with @westernangler snapping thousands of salmon in this one school near Cheynes Beach. Patience is a virtue while waiting for them to get within casting range but if you're chasing salmon down south this weekend, stick to the beaches as the Bureau of Meteorology have said the large swell is looking too dangerous to fish off the rocks.

Pic of the Week!

The Exmouth Gulf flats proved once again why it's fly fishing paradise this week and @shallowwatersafaris know how to take some cracking snaps, with this lovely GT putting on a show. The old 'dip the fish in the water then take it out as the photographer goes trigger finger' trick does make the fish look rather majestic.

Broome catches
One of the finest eating fishing in the sea! Tripletail are being caught in good numbers when casting plastics or lures near floating debris or structure close to Broome, with @flying.foam used the diving barra lure perfectly to produce the goods.

Boats

Offshore fishing has been very good for red emperor, Rankin cod and coral trout around the lumps about 35km out either side of town. In Roebuck Bay tripletail have been active around the moorings and the odd northern mulloway has been pulled up from the ledges. Jacks Creek has fished very well for barramundi, threadfin salmon and mangrove jack, but the Fingers, Dampier Creek and Crab Creek have been very quiet, offering mainly blue-nosed salmon and mud crabs. Crews fishing close in off Gantheaume and Entrance points have been picking up bluebone. This arvo and all of Saturday look decent on the forecast but some stronger easterly winds and swell are expected over Sunday and Monday.

Shore-based

First barra snaps don't get much better than this! @good_dhu_dhu took his mum out for a sunset fish at Lake Kununurra and this 75cm barra was the best way to round out the day.

The fresh water and brackish parts of the Fitzroy River have produced decent barramundi and some good threadfin salmon, while Willie Creek has been consistent for mangrove jack and the odd small trevally. All of the creek systems have produced decent numbers of mud crabs on foot. Town Beach Jetty has offered small queenfish and trevally. Once again, Lake Kununurra in the East Kimberley saw the most consistent barra captures in larger sizes, with live baits working best.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
David McGregor @maccydave took Sunny Cass out for a cheeky yak mack session west of Exmouth with plenty of good Spaniards captured around the inshore reefs.

Boats

In Exmouth Gulf the better catches have come from patches of clearer water with golden trevally, school mackerel and queenfish the main fare. They have been in reasonable numbers on the Shoals but were in better numbers and sizes on the eastern side. Exmouth Reef has fished well for Rankin cod and blue-lined emperor and these species along with coral trout have been active at Cooper and Camplin Shoals. Fly-fishers targeting the Gulf’s offshore flats have encountered permit and big giant trevally. The odd cobia has been in the Gulf as well. At the Muirons, sailfish have been active, along with plenty of Rankin cod and some coral trout. In the 40m and 60m depths Rankin cod and coral trout catches have been supplemented with red emperor, while decent Spanish mackerel have been caught on live baits. On the west side sailfish and black marlin have been in good numbers in the 60-150m depths, while big wahoo have been taken at the FADs, along with dolphinfish. Wahoo have also been caught at Helby Bank. A few blue marlin have been kicking around in the 400m depths, but getting out that far has been difficult at times. Bottom fishers out west have found plenty of goldband snapper in 70-130m depths and ruby snapper have been landed in 200m-plus. When patches of cooler water can be found in the lagoons around Tantabiddi spangled emperor have been caught. Both mornings this weekend look alright on the forecast, but Saturday morning looks to be the preferred window across the two days. Expect 2m swells and light to moderate southerly winds next week.

Shore-based

Queenfish and trevally have been in good numbers around the Bundegi boat ramp, smashing metal slices, stickbaits and live baits. Learmonth has held lots of bream around the jetty pylons, along with mangrove jack and a few small trevally and queenfish. In the town marina bream have been plentiful, along with small queenfish and a few mangrove jack and cod. Bigger queenfish have been caught from the marina’s outside wall. At VLF Bay around to Lighthouse Bay spangled emperor have been the main catch, although crab baits have accounted for some sizeable bluebone and golden trevally have shown up at times. These species have also been caught at Tantabiddi.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Spanish mackerel and tuna catches have been good, especially south of town. North of town saw a few coral trout among the pink snapper catches, but dhufish have been quiet. Charter boats heading further out have been finding pink snapper, sweetlip and baldchin groper, along with Spanish mackerel, while kayak fishers have been getting their share of mackies off Red Bluff. Those fishing along the cliffs have landed a few Spanish mackerel and also pink snapper. The mornings over the next few days should hold the preferred boating windows with a 2m swell and calmer southerly winds.

Shore-based

The Murchison River has been producing a good range of species, including golden trevally and giant herring at the river mouth. Bream and cod have been at their usual haunts in the middle reaches and small chopper tailor have been plentiful – so much so that they have been a nuisance for those chasing yellowfin whiting from the sand spit. Blue swimmer crab catches have waned but mud crabs have been in good numbers with some big models taken as far up river as Castle Rock. The odd mangrove jack has been caught in the river as well. Ocean-side things have been much quieter, possibly because of the calm weather. Red Bluff and Wittecarra have offered mixed bags of yellowfin whiting, small dart and bull herring but few tailor have been about. Fishing from the cliffs has also been quiet but down at Wagoe, tailor, Spanish mackerel and pink snapper have been caught.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
The Abrolhos Islands have been very productive for pelagics over the past few months with that warm water pushing south and Matt Woods @matts_outa_range landed this nice Spaniard during glassy conditions this week.

Boats

Last weekend fished pretty well with pink snapper dominating catches on both sides of town, with 20-40m the better ground. Pelagic fishing has been steady too, with Spanish mackerel and northern tuna species about in good numbers, with the better catches mainly happening north of town especially from the South Tomi Wreck to Coronation. Sharks have been a problem for mackerel chasers there and also at African Reef which has produced at times and towards the Abrolhos at Mid Reef. If you hook a mackie and a shark is hot on its tail, try free spooling your reel as mackerel can often outpace sharks. Dinghy fishers have been catching squid and herring at Point Moore and St George’s. It’s mostly moderate south-westerly winds this weekend with a 3m swell, but Saturday chould be manageable for the larger boats.

Shore-based

Ben Luff @northern_addicts with a nice tailor plucked from the shore in town!

Herring have been in better numbers although they have been scattered. North of the Batavia Coast Marina, the rock wall at Mitchell & Brown, the north side of Sunset Beach and the rock wall at Sail Inn have all produced. These spots have also held small tailor and a few pike. At the Greenough River mouth the second point has fished best, especially in the morning when small pike, chopper tailor and the odd larger one have been caught. At West Bank weed has been a hassle at times, but tailor and school mulloway have been caught. Whiting have been hard to find, but the annual mullet migration has started. The odd squid has been taken at the Batavia Coast Marina, while at the accessibility platform there cod have been quick to swoop in and engulf hooked tailor.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Jurien Bay has been on fire for billfish over the past few weeks and Chris Tanti @flow_fishing_australia enjoyed a brilliant session this week. The Jurien FADs have also been productive for dolly's and Spaniards are also still doing the rounds closer to shore, so make the most of it before the cooler weather settles in!

Boats

Fishers were spoilt for the conditions with little swell or wind for most of the week. Those chasing a feed of demersal species were reporting mixed results, with some finding the fish easily and others having to put a lot of time in. Those fishing 30-40m seemed to be the ones finding the fish. Boats that stayed in close were also on to good numbers of dhufish along with the usual pink snapper inside the White Bank. Bay fishers have been having a ball with large schools of herring and skippy throughout the bay. There is an abundance of small baitfish in the 20-30m depths with a lot of tuna feeding in the area, so it is worth having a troll through these areas. Both days look manageable for the boaties but Sunday looks best at this stage.

Shore-based

Larger mulloway have made their presence known south of town with a few reports of recent captures. Lancelin Jetty has been fishing well in the evenings with catches of herring, tailor and skippy. Along the beaches there have been plenty of sand whiting and herring. Tailor have been very active with some classic fish-a-cast sessions to be had when flicking out lures or baits to areas the schools hold up in throughout the day. The evenings have seen numbers of small whaler sharks taking baits.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Mondrain Island has held plenty of nannygai and Samsonfish, while big breaksea cod and sizeable nannygai have been landed at Davey Island. Tuna have been active behind Cull Island, while Observatory Island has produced good numbers of queen snapper and harlequin fish. Big squid have been caught between Cook Rocks and the port, while the corner of Wylie Bay has yielded King George whiting and flathead. Tinny fishers have been catching plenty of herring in Esperance Bay. It should be manageable for the boats to duck out over the coming days with a steady 2m swell and 10-13 knot winds.

Shore-based

Gummy sharks have been in good numbers at Thomas River, while big skippy and salmon have been holding at Tagon Beach. Dunns has been fishing well for salmon, skippy and mulloway, while flathead and big schools of salmon have been in Wylie Bay. Roses Beach has yielded salmon, with mulloway caught at night. Lots of big herring have been in Esperance Bay with burley working nicely. The Town Jetty has produced squid and garfish at night, while Observatory Beach has held good sand whiting. Big bream have been pulled out of Wheatfield Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
11-year old Albie Ikstrums with a very fat and healthy salmon caught off Lowlands Beach over the weekend and another entry for our salmon photo competition (can see comp details here). Spots like this are great for chasing salmon as you can often get a bit of shelter out of the wind from the steep mainland and fish safely from the sand.

Boats

The dirty water from Oyster Harbour has pushed way out into King George Sound which has been bad news for squid and King George whiting chasers who have struggled this week. Dolphinfish have continued to be active at the FADs, while bonito have been caught there in decent numbers too. For better numbers of bonito however, off Bald Head was the place to go. Only a few boats have been able to get out to the coral ground and the wind and swell is a bit all over the place this coming week. The better boating conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday after this bigger swell passes through.

Shore-based

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the heads up for possible dangerous rock fishing this weekend along the South Coast with a big swell rolling through, so make sure you keep the sand between your toes if land-based fishing across these days. Salmon have certainly been the main game this week, with the better catches east of Albany. Cheynes Beach was quiet over the weekend, but bounced back with huge schools showing up during the week. The beach at Salmon Holes has produced and to a lesser extent Nanarup, Normans, Fosters, Back Beach and Reef Beach. Bremer Bay has held plenty as well. West of town a few have turned up at Ocean Beach, Muttonbird and Lowlands. Dirty water has made fishing for bread-and-butter species difficult at the town marina, Frenchman Bay, and Emu Point, while the King and Kalgan rivers have offered little for bream chasers. Most have been heading further afield to the Hay River and Wilson Inlet for their quarry, but even these waterways have become murky. Scoop netters have been getting blue swimmer crabs in Princess Royal Harbour, but numbers have started to thin out.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Trudy Morehouse with arguably the best eating shark in WA waters this week off Busselton. Gummy sharks are right up there for quality on the plate and there is a decent yield of meat on these fish if you decide to take one home.

Boats

Dhufish have dominated catches either side of Bunbury and they have been widespread from 20m out, but 30m depths seem to have been a sweet spot. Vexed Bottom Meats have accounted for plenty of fish. The main bycatch has been pink snapper, but not in any big numbers. An 18.5kg dhufish was taken on a night mission in the shipping channel out from Bunbury. Squid and cuttlefish have also been widespread out from Bunbury and in Geographe Bay. Demersal fishers have done well on them by having a floating jig out the back. Small yellowtail kingfish have been in good numbers in Geographe Bay and at the Capes, with kayak fishers getting among them and also catching pink snapper, small Samsonfish and the odd dhufish. Squid, King George whiting and herring have also been plentiful in Geographe Bay. In the Leschenault Estuary good blue swimmer crab catches continued and those trolling lures have found plenty of bull herring and decent chopper tailor. Late on Sunday arvo and early on Monday look to be better boating windows.

Shore-based

These are the kind of snaps we love to see for our kids salmon photo competition, youngsters having an awesome time catching this hard-fighting species with the sand between their toes! This great fish was landed by 12-year old Matthew Zec alongside his dad Dean at Smith's Beach and after sending us this snap, he's in with a chance to win some cool prizes! For more info on our salmon photo competition, click here!

With the Bureau of Meteorology giving us a heads up for dangerous rock fishing conditions until Sunday from Cape Naturaliste to Bremer Bay, make sure you keep the sand between your toes if land-based fishing over the coming days. Beaches from Preston down to Dalyellup have been consistent for tailor in the 40-45cm range and have also held herring and sand whiting. Drone fishers have been getting some good pink snapper and a big mulloway was taken on the cast at Back Beach. Dalyellup has been thick with herring, while up at Preston a few dart have been swimming with the sand whiting. The Bunbury Cut has produced bread-and-butter species, while Busselton Jetty has offered mainly herring and squid.  The Collie River has continued to hold small giant herring and lots of small soapy mulloway, while in the Leschenault Estuary scoop netters have had to work harder for a feed of blue swimmer crabs. Sadly, the good times seem to be over for those targeting yellowfin whiting on the flats. Further south salmon have continued to tease. Yeagerup and Warren Beach have offered a few resident fish, but it was mainly juvenile salmon, herring, a few tarwhine and tailor. Salmon have also been reported from Injidup, Deepdene, Castle Rock, Point Picquet, Dunsborough and Hamelin Bay. Very few herring have been about Dunsborough, but they have been in good numbers at Margaret River and Augusta. A few tailor have been caught either side of Dunsborough.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Avid 6-year old fisher Harvey Wheeler with a cracker of a rainbow trout landed from the aptly named Harvey Dam! It was a bunch of small redfin perch before this capture until Harvey decided to speed up his retrieval, which enticed this lovely fish to smash his soft plastic. A great capture for the youngster and kudos to his dad Nick for sending in the snap!
The Capel River has held small redfin perch. Collie River and Harvey and Wellington dams have also produced small to medium-sized redfin, although some trout have been turning up around sunrise and sunset on soft plastics and spinners. Trout fishing has generally been very slow, but the Pemberton region’s faster flowing water or small rapids have held a few if you’re willing to put the distance in.
Mandurah and surrounds
Tackle World Miami owner Ash Ramm with a lovely breaksea cod on the @oceans_legacy jig! This species is commonly regarded as one of the nicest eating of all the demersals.

Boats: There has been a handful of small dolphinfish hanging around the FADs and Spanish mackerel have been seen jumping south of town. Crayfishing has been going well in inshore waters, which have become much clearer, enabling divers to get a feed as well. These waters have been holding lots of baitfish and good numbers of herring, tailor, skippy, sand whiting and squid have been caught. On the Five-Fathom Bank sizeable pink snapper have been landed around sunset. The 40m depths off Dawesville have yielded good numbers of pink snapper, along with dhufish and breaksea cod, while big King George whiting have been holding in 30m depths. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary, blue swimmer crabs were taken in good numbers and tailor, herring and skippy have been plentiful. The forecast looks okay this weekend for the boaties, but Sunday should be the better of the two days.

Land-based: The beaches either side of town have continued to fish well for chopper tailor, herring and skippy. Late-autumn school mulloway have made an appearance as well and drone fishers have been landing up pink snapper. In the Peel-Harvey Estuary bream have been in the marinas and canals with herring, tailor, yellowfin whiting and juvenile Samsonfish among the bycatch. Yellowfin whiting numbers have dwindled, but big ones have been caught in ones and twos around Boundary Island. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been worthwhile, while at the Dawesville Cut the water is clear and baitfish have been abundant, attracting herring, tailor, skippy and squid. Herring, tailor and skippy have also been caught at the Mandurah bridges, along with the odd yellowfin whiting and silver bream.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Dhufish were pretty quiet this week but some crews fishing closer in found a few towards the Five-Fathom Bank and around Garden Island in 20m or so. Very few pink snapper have been among the bycatch and balchin groper and breaksea cod have been scarce too, although the back of Garden Island has produced a few baldies and dhufish. The snapper fishing is expected to improve once a storm rolls in with larger swells. A few squid have been about with the better ones taken in around 8m on heavier jigs. Inshore tailor and bonito have been about, while in Cockburn Sound more Spanish mackerel have been seen jumping than actually being caught. Plenty of skippy have been taken on the broken ground in Cockburn Sound, while herring, King George and sand whiting have been caught on Parmelia Bank, inside of Garden Island, in Mangles Bay and off Penguin Island. Close in at Woodman Point has been a sand whiting hotspot, while blue swimmer crab catches in Cockburn Sound continued nicely. Both days look inviting this weekend for the boaties albeit with a bit of rain expected.

Land-based: Tailor have continued their good run on local beaches with Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point the pick of the spots. These beaches have also held good numbers of herring and sand whiting, while Long Point has also offered solid skippy. The grain terminal and Penguin Island sand spit have fished well for herring, sand whiting and flathead, with the odd yellowfin whiting around as well. Palm Beach, Rockingham Jetty, Ammo Jetty and Woodman Point have held small chopper tailor, herring, sand whiting and the odd squid. Late last week when the weather front passed over Woodman Point it saw several decent pink snapper landed. Some good skippy have been caught at Point Peron along with a few herring and sand whiting. Point Peron has again been the pick of the land-based squid spots. Divers swimming out from the Rockingham foreshore have been picking up blue swimmer crabs.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Recfishwest needs to give a very special thanks and farewell to the Anglers Fishing World Fremantle team and their owner, Marco Orifici, who announced earlier this week that the store will be closing its doors in June 2025 after 30 years of trading. Together with the dedicated help of their enthusiastic, passionate and devoted staff, including Tony Thwin who has been there for the awesome ride, they have helped multiple generations of fishers over many years and have been providing Recfishwest with fantastic fishing reports to pass on to all metro fishers for a long time. It's a sad day for the WA tackle industry given the tough times its faced over the years, but we wish Marco, Tony and all the other dedicated staff members from AFW all the best in their future endeavours. Pay these guys a visit and give them a huge thankyou for making fishing better in our state!

Boats

Shaun Wieffering from @fishinwishinlife_official had a quick send out from Hillarys this week and it didn't take long for this lovely 90cm dhuie to come over the side. While the bag limit is two demersals per licensed fisher, you don't always need to catch two given a big demersal like this has a massive yield of meat from the two fillets, wings, frame, cheeks and even the head when you don't let any of this fish go to waste. Remember that the pelagics are still running wild off Perth, so consider switching your fish. For tips on how you can get the most out of your demersals so nothing goes to waste, check out our recent video here.

Dhufish catches have been good out from Two Rocks, Ocean Reef, around Rottnest and Carnac islands in 20-50m, while baldchin groper have been in good numbers as well. Pink snapper have been harder to find. Sambos have been at the wrecks around Rottnest Island, while the island’s bays have produced squid and King George whiting. The West End and Duffield Ridge was a hot spot for pelagics and offered tuna, yellowtail kingfish, bonito, shark mackerel and Spanish mackerel. Blue marlin and yellowfin tuna have been in the Rottnest Trench, while the fish towers have offered yellowtail kingfish. The FADs have produced dolphinfish and wahoo in decent numbers. Three-Mile Reef has fished well for skippy and King George whiting, while north metro waters have produced sand whiting in close, as did the 10-15m depths of City Beach and Cottesloe. The Windmills has held its usual mix of sand whiting and King George whiting, with the odd squid about as well. Tailor have been active in the white water around Mewstones. In the Swan River, drop netters are doing well on blue swimmer crabs in the deeper sections such as Blackwall Reach and Mosman Bay, but also on Karrakatta Ban, where flathead and flounder have also been picked up on micro jigs between runs. Trolling has been the best way to get chopper tailor in the Swan, but they have been in fewer numbers over the past fortnight. Both days this weekend should be relatively flat on the water but expect a bit of rain.

Shore-based

Tailor have been fishing well at Cottesloe, Leighton, Catherine Point and the North Mole, where an angler enjoyed a hot session using a Samaki Pacemaker Cast Minnow earlier this week. Herring and skippy have been at these beaches also. North and South Moles have offered herring, garfish and skippy, with North Mole the better spot for squid. The rock walls along Mews Road have offered garfish, herring and a few squid, while Fremantle Harbour has held herring, yellowtail and tarwhine. Some decent tailor have turned up at Floreat Beach, which has also held plenty of herring and a few sand whiting, skippy and flathead. The north metro beaches have produced tailor, herring and sand whiting, while drone fishers have been landing pink snapper. A few dart were among the sand whiting at Quinns Beach. The Swan River has been quiet, especially in the lower reaches. Point Walter has been worth a try for chopper tailor, while bream chasers have done best using fresh mullet and prawns to fish around Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge, the Causeway, Garratt Road Bridge, Redcliffe Bridge and around structure at Maylands and Guildford. Soapy mulloway have been swimming with the bream at these locations, while Maylands has also produced a few flathead on soft plastics, but blowfish have been a nuisance there. The Canning River has produced flathead either side of Mt Henry Bridge, while giant herring have been in good numbers along this stretch also despite the sizes being small.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
