Pic of the Week!

This cracker of a northern mulloway caught via live baiting from young Flynn near Kununurra takes out pic of the week, with the youngster almost getting spooled on the lighter gear before both he and his dad @good_dhu_dhu managed to frantically get some line back to see this great fish hit the mud.

Broome catches
Broome produced the goods on the tripletail yet again this week, with the young duo from @flying.foam working together to land one of the tastiest fish in the sea.

Boats

Good numbers of Spanish mackerel and queenfish have been taken in Roebuck Bay, where a few tripletail have been at the moorings. Northern mulloway have been hanging around the lumps and cod and fingermark perch have been swimming with sharks on the edge of the Deeps. Off Barred Creek, Spanish mackerel, blue-lined emperor, coral trout and sailfish have been taken, while bluebone have been caught in close of Gantheaume Point. Dampier Creek has been the most consistent spot for threadfin salmon, while most creeks have held mud crabs. The Fingers has been hit and miss for salmon. The weather is looking glorious for the boaties until the wind spikes on Sunday evening with rain and stronger winds expected into early next week.

A very nice cobia landed on the Squidtrex for @cookedgaskett in our Kimberley region this week. Flicking a plastic or lure near a big ray is a good tactic for luring these predators out from under the wing for a strike.

Shore-based

In the Fitzroy River barramundi either side of a metre have been taken on live baits at the Cuttings. Broome’s Town Beach Jetty has produced bream, small trevally and queenfish, while bluebone and sizeable queenfish have been caught at Entrance Point. Barred Creek has been heavily fished, but has offered a few bluebone, while Willie Creek has held the odd trevally and queenfish. Whiting have started to turn up at Cable Beach.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Skilled freediver @britt_c_stewart with a stunner of a Tuesday tuskie speared on the Ningaloo Reef.

Boats

The weather has been unusually fickle this past week with strong easterlies turning north which pushed in a lumpy northerly swell. Conditions have eased a little in the afternoons and a few crews managed to get out west where they worked hard to find black marlin and sailfish inshore. Goldband snapper were in 100m, pearl perch were swimming with the goldband a bit further out, and in the 30-50m lumps a few Rankin cod and the odd red emperor turned up. One or two Spanish mackerel have been caught on Helby Bank, while crews targeting the lagoons have landed Chinaman cod and spangled emperor. There has been little action at the Muirons because of the wind and swell. Fishing has been better in Exmouth Gulf, where heaps of Spanish mackerel have been seen free jumping and good numbers have been caught on stickbaits at Bennett and Cooper Shoals. Sizeable gold-spot and golden trevally have been landed at King Reef despite the presence of sharks. Blue-lined emperor, spangled emperor and coral trout have rewarded bottom fishers in the Gulf, while the northern parts have held a few small red emperor and Rankin cod. Lots of floating weed has made squid fishing difficult, but those who have persevered have managed to get a feed in a few hours. The weather looks inviting this weekend although Saturday looks to be the better day. The easterly winds will return from early next week.

Shore-based

He's gone and bloody done it again! To prove last week wasn't a fluke, @broglefishogle landed another solid GT in Exmouth this week, with his popper annihilated on the surface.

In Exmouth Gulf good queenfish, trevally and the odd tuna have been taken around Learmonth and the industrial area with big queenfish being caught at Bundegi and VLF Bay. Swells have made it difficult for those targeting spangled emperor around the tip of the Gulf, but down at Tantabiddi a few spangled emperor and golden trevally have been landed. South of Learmonth has been the best bet for whiting, while the town marina has been full of baitfish and has held an interesting mix of species including bream, cod, blue-lined emperor, Spanish flag and the odd mangrove jack. Big queenfish and trevally have been taken from the marina’s outer rockwall, where squid fishing has been reasonable. Wapet Creek has offered flathead and whiting near the mouth and bream further in.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

A few Spanish mackerel have been taken off Red Bluff, but the best fishing has been further south around Bluff Point and Island Rock. North of town has been very quiet pelagic wise, but it has fished well for pink snapper which have been in good numbers. Water visibility has been excellent in depths up to 20m, with dhufish around the 8kg mark, cod and baldchin groper and gold-spot trevally landed, while north-west of town a 13kg red emperor was pulled up from deep ground. The weather looks inviting for a send out over the coming days with the mornings looking best.

Shore-based

Wagoe has been going off for Spanish mackerel chasers with ballooners and drone fishers landing five or six Spaniards a day. The easterly winds are hanging around this week too so this action should continue for those giving it a go. Closer to town a land-based mackerel was caught at Chinamans. Fishing has also been good from the cliffs, where along with tailor and pink snapper a couple of big baldchin groper have been landed. Big tailor have been taken at Frustrations, Oysters and the river mouth, while chopper tailor, soapy mulloway and dart have been caught at Red Bluff and Chinamans. In the Murchison River big blue swimmer crabs have pushed upstream. Their numbers haven’t been great, but sizes have been very good. Big mud crabs have been about as well and they have pushed as far up as the Dance Floor. A few yellowfin whiting have been caught at the spit and the marina has held lots of small tailor and a few bream.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
@mat.svenson seems to have found the sweet spot for the Spaniards off Gero, with another yak mack landed this week during a nice weather window.

Boats

Pink snapper have been in good numbers north and north-west of town in 18-40m depths, but dhufish have been harder to find and catches have been random. The South-Western Bank has held a few dhuies, along with baldchin groper and plenty of sweetlip in the 40-55cm range. Spanish mackerel and tuna have been active towards the Abrolhos Islands, while a professional crayfisher trolling for a feed of mackerel on his day off picked up a small sailfish near the Wallabi Group on a 140mm Saltwater Lab metal blade. Crews fishing inshore have struggled this week. Conditions aren’t looking ideal for a send out in the boats with some undulating winds and swell arriving. Bigger boats might be able to duck out on Saturday.

Shore-based

Tailor fishing has been very quiet, but mulloway activity has been more promising and they have been caught from soapie size up to 20kg in the Port Gregory area. Closer to Geraldton, strong currents and weed have made fishing difficult, but Coronation Beach has offered a few mulloway when fishable. Drummond Cove also produced mulloway with fish around 12kg taken when there have been gaps between the weed. The north side of the Batavia Coast Marina has offered a few squid, but south of town fishing has been very quiet.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Loveness headed out with peter Fullarton on one of his Tailored Treks and landed this nice mulloway, which were in great numbers this week around Lancelin.

Boats

Some glamor weather was on offer last weekend and earlier in the week before big swells made beach launches and leaving the bay difficult to attempt in trailer boats. Demersal species were hard to find until fishers were in depths exceeding 35m, where lumps were producing the usual suspects of dhufish and breaksea cod. Drifting the flats produced pink snapper and baldchin groper, with good numbers of cuttlefish snatching the baits too. The bay has fished very well, with plenty of skippy, herring and squid fishing taking fishing to the next level. Looks like the swells will ease into next week by around Tuesday or Wednesday to make the most of the great fishing on offer but it's not looking too inviting on the forecast this weekend with some larger swells, wind and rain expected. Land-based looks to be the safer option.

Shore-based

School-sized mulloway have been caught throughout the evenings, although sharks and rays have been particularly active. Tailor haven’t been in huge numbers, although most sessions have found a few fish around 45-50cm in great condition that provide enough fillets for a good feed. We can expect some great snapper action with the swell bringing in fish close to the beach. Most beaches have been fishing exceptionally well for large sand whiting and herring.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Esperance Bay has held plenty of squid as well as sand whiting, herring, snook and King George whiting. Out wide nannygai to 55cm have been in good numbers along with sizeable breaksea cod. Yellowtail kingfish to 17kg have been taken, along with queen snapper and leatherjacket. A few pink snapper have been landed west of town, while Charley and Cull Islands arching through to Lion Island and Flat Rocks have been hotspots for tuna. Conditions are looking pretty atrocious and not accessible with this large swell and strong winds sticking around, but Wednesday onwards next week should hopefully produce better conditions.

Shore-based

The Town Jetty has produced good-sized squid, hordes of herring, reasonable skippy and garfish at night. Taylor Street Jetty has yielded the same species as well as King George whiting. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has held lots of herring, small bream, flathead and flounder. Fourth and Salmon beaches have produced good numbers of salmon and herring, with fair numbers of skippy at Fourth Beach also. Skippy to a kilo have been taken at Stockyards along with herring, soapy mulloway and the odd salmon. Alexander Bay has held salmon, bronze whaler sharks, skippy to 2kg and plenty of herring, while Israelite Bay has offered small mulloway, gummy sharks, decent flathead and King George whiting from the rocks. At Roses Beach skippy to 5kg, bronze whaler sharks, salmon and the odd tailor have been caught, while Munglinup has offered lots of small salmon, along with skippy to 5kg, decent mulloway and plenty of herring. Maybe consider the jetties or lakes if you’re keen to wet a line until this gnarly weather subsides.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
@andrew_ward_3 had a great day out on the water with his mates for Albany's Southern Ocean Spectacular, managing to take out first place on the most species which included this beautifully coloured queen snapper.

Boats

Pink snapper have been in good numbers for crews that got out wide and big breaksea cod have been among the bycatch. Big Samsonfish have been hanging around the lumps not too far out, while the islands have been fishing well for bonito, tuna, salmon, the odd yellowtail kingfish and dolphinfish. In King George Sound squid have been in good sizes and numbers and reasonable numbers of medium-sized King George whiting have been about. Snook, flathead and sand whiting have also been caught in the Sound. It’s impossible for the boats on the forecast unfortunately over the coming days with a mighty swell of 3-5m expected until at least Tuesday. From Wednesday onwards next week should hopefully provide better conditions.

According to @thetidaltale crew, if a bream is hiding in a system near Albany, you can be sure that @liammorrow2 is going to find it. A nice bream landed via the BFS (bait finesse system) technique that Liam has mastered using a variety of different baitcasters and swimbaits.

Shore-based

The salmon party seems to be winding down, but they have been appearing sporadically at well-known spots such as Cheynes, Lowlands, Shelley Beach, Nanarup and Sand Patch. Bremer Bay has been the most consistent spot for them, while a few good sessions have been enjoyed up at Walpole. Most local beaches have held plenty of herring and a few tarwhine. Bream fishing has picked up in the King and Kalgan rivers and Emu Point now has clean water and offered herring, bream, juvenile salmon and whiting. Herring, small King George whiting and decent squid have been taken at Frenchman Bay and Whalers Cove, while in Princess Royal Harbour the odd blue swimmer crab has been about. The town marina has fished well for squid and offered a few herring and small skippy among the pickers. It’s not looking possible for an easy land-based fish until at least Wednesday but a freshwater fish inland could be a good option considering rain is expected to cool down the streams and potentially spice up trout and redfin perch action.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Several nice baldchin groper turned up for John and Trudy off Busselton this week. Given these fish are highly susceptible to barotrauma (especially in depths greater than 15m) and release poorly past these depths, the size limit was removed. Very tender flesh that tastes amazing now matter what dish it goes in.

Boats

Pink snapper have been in big numbers inshore either side of Bunbury with plenty being pulled from 20-40m depths. They have been taken on the drift and by those anchoring and using burley. Dhufish have been harder to find, mainly because the snapper have been so thick, but 30m-plus depths have held a few along with some big baldchin groper and quite a few breaksea cod. A few Samsonfish have been hanging around the inshore lumps, while small yellowtail kingfish have been at the Bouvards. Squid have been active in 5-20m, while the 30m-plus depths have held lots of cuttlefish. Lumps in Geographe Bay have produced pink snapper and baldchin groper with the Four-Mile Reef producing big dhufish along with pink snapper. Dhufish catches have been good off the west coast in 40-55m, while yak fishers have been getting a few in closer. Yak fishers also found good numbers of squid in Geographe Bay, while those launching off Forrest Beach south of Bunbury have picked up solid skippy as well as squid. Blue swimmer crabs have continued to be caught in Leschenault Inlet, which is also holding herring and chopper tailor, while a few blue swimmers have been pulled up from Koombana Bay. They have been caught towards the Busselton end of Geographe Bay as well. Saturday and Monday morning should hold inviting windows for the boaties.

Shore-based

It’s been a merry May for shore fishers who have enjoyed a great run of pink snapper from Preston Beach in the north all the way down to Peppermint Grove in the south. Plenty of pink snapper have been caught around town with Back Beach and the Bunbury Cut throwing up a few at times. There have been whispers of metre-plus mulloway from both sides of town as well, while most beaches have held big numbers of herring and a few tailor. In the Collie River a few bream have been caught on bait and soapy mulloway and small giant herring have been hanging about. Plenty of squid have been caught at Busselton Jetty, which has also held herring, skippy, a few Samsonfish and just-size pink snapper at the end. Further south saw a couple of good tailor taken at Mitchell Rocks and the Dunsborough area has offered pink snapper and the odd small dhufish for drone fishers. Boranup Beach has produced a couple of pink snapper and herring, while bream and herring have been in the lower Blackwood River at Augusta. Salmon catches have dried up and most will be on the South Coast off the beaches now.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Plenty of 30cm-plus redfin perch have been taken on soft plastics in the Collie town area and its outskirts. Glen Mervyn Dam has also produced some big ones as did waterways in the Southern Forests region. Smaller redfin perch have been caught at Harvey Dam and Wellington Dam. Other spots worth a try for redfin have been the Capel River near Capel and the Black Diamond and Kepwari lakes near Collie. With a bit of rain expected in our South-West regions the back of the rapids and falls could see trout action start to heat up, with larger fish lurking to attack insects and small fish that flow through.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Dhufish catches have been sporadic, but sizes have been good. Dawesville and the Bouvards have been the better spots and plenty of baldchin groper have been keeping them company with cray divers seeing good numbers of them. Big King George whiting and breaksea cod have been scarce. Once again pink snapper have been caught in good numbers closer in rather than right on the Five-Fathom Bank and they were likely to be feeding on blue swimmer crabs leaving the estuary system. Big skippy have been caught on the Five, the odd yellowtail kingfish has passed through and even a couple of sand bass have turned up. Kingfish have been at the Bouvards too. A few squid have been caught inshore and they have pushed into the Peel Harvey estuary as well, with a few taken just past the Dawesville Cut. Drop netters have found crabs harder to come by, but tailor herring, skippy and juvenile salmon have been in good numbers. Both Saturday and Monday morning look decent on the forecast.

Land-based: A few big yellowfin whiting have been hitting surface lures in the Peel-Harvey Estuary, but they have been much harder to find as the weather cools. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been worthwhile, but the next cold front could flush them out to sea. A surprise catch in the Serpentine River at South Yunderup last week was a sizeable longtom. The Murray River has fished best for bream chasers, while the Dawesville Cut has offered herring, a few chopper tailor and the odd skippy. Schools of 50cm salmon have been cruising along the rocks at the Cut although were reluctant to bite. Herring, tailor and the odd skippy have been taken at the town bridges. Most beaches have held lots of herring. Only a few tailor turned up although 60cm models have been landed at White Hills. Pink snapper have been much more responsive and they have been caught at White Hills, the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut, the town rock walls and beaches north of Silver Sands. Decent mulloway were taken in the San Remo and Madora Bay areas.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Pink snapper have been pretty much everywhere with good hauls coming from 5m out to 100m. Anchoring and using burley has been most effective, but plenty have been caught on the drift. All the usual inshore spots have fired such as Sulphur Rock, Harding Rock, the Sisters, off the grain terminal, the D9, inshore of Garden Island, the Garden Island causeway, Coventry Reef and behind Garden Island. Dhufish have been holding deeper, in 50m or so behind Garden Island and towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Quite a few big baldchin groper have been active as well, while inshore snapper chasers have picked up skippy to 60cm, while Samsonfish have been on the lumps and the odd yellowtail kingfish has turned up. Inshore snapper fishers have also picked up the odd big mulloway after dark, while schools of slimy mackerel have been sighted. Squid, sand whiting and King George whiting have been at their usual haunts including the inside of Garden Island, Mangles Bay, off Woodman Point, behind Penguin Island and on Pamelia Bank. The better squid catches have come in 3-5m. Blue swimmer crab numbers have dropped off in Cockburn Sound. Saturday morning is looking best for the boaties.

Land-based: A few good tailor have been taken at Port Kennedy, Long Point and Secret Harbour and most local beaches have held plenty of herring. Mulloway either side of a metre have been taken at Rockingham Jetty and one or two have been landed at the Ammo Jetty. These spots and Palm Beach Jetty and Woodman Point have also held squid, scaly mackerel and herring. Those prepared to take a dip have been getting blue swimmer crabs off the Rockingham foreshore.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Perth really cranked up for mulloway captures this week, with both Cockburn Sound and the Swan River being reliable spots for fish over a metre. Jazz Charters crewman @harleyjaroszz decided to wet a line in his downtime to land this nice sunset croaker.

Boats

Afternoon sessions have been going well for inshore pink snapper chasers with plenty of good ones landed around sunset out from Fremantle’s North Mole and in the shipping channel, where kayak fishers have been getting a few. Pinkies have been in 10-12m off Hillarys, out at Stragglers and at the Three-Mile Reef, where they have been swimming with chunky skippy. Samsonfish have been taken out from Two Rocks and behind Rottnest Island. Tuna have been sighted off Hillarys, while tailor have been at Mewstones and were also swimming with skippy at Stragglers. Dhufish chasers have found good fish north of Rottnest in 40-80m and south of the island in the 40s. Baldchin groper, breaksea cod and harlequin fish have been the main bycatch. Lots of herring and a few King George whiting have been in the bays at Rottnest and KGs have been swimming with sand whiting at Windmills. Sandies nudging 30cm have been taken in 7-10m off Cottesloe. Squid fishing has been reasonable, but the water has been milky at a lot of the regular haunts and crews have fared better closer in in 2-5m off South Fremantle. A few dolphinfish have been kicking around the Rottnest Trench and yellowfin tuna to 20kg have been landed off Rottnest’s Parker Point. Saturday looks to be the one good day to duck out this coming week (you might get a tad wet) with some stronger winds and rain expected on the other days. The easterly winds will come roaring in from Tuesday next week, but Monday morning could hold an inviting window.

Shore-based

A couple of medium-sized pink snapper were picked up at North Mole late this week as the weather turned and tailor around 50cm have been taken back towards shore near the service station. Herring, squid and cuttlefish have also been caught at North Mole, while at South Mole herring fishers using blobs were getting bitten off, so a few changed up to bigger gear and did well on tailor in the 40-50cm range. Tailor around the 40cm mark have been taken between Port Beach and Cottesloe and a few big tailor have been hitting surface poppers at Trigg, while herring and the odd skippy have been taken at Floreat and City Beach. A few squid have been caught from the rock walls in South Fremantle where juvenile Samsonfish have been providing fun for those using light gear. Fremantle Harbour has held plenty of scaly mackerel and yellowtail have been active around E-Shed after dark. Herring and skippy have been caught at the Mindarie rock wall, while pink snapper have been taken between Ocean Reef and Two Rocks. It’s been slim pickings in the lower reaches of the Swan River, but flathead, tarwhine, bream and tailor have been taken at times. The Swan has fished better upstream from the Causeway with bream in reasonable numbers in the mornings and late afternoons at Burswood, Garratt Road Bridge and Maylands. A few soapy mulloway have been keeping them company. The pylons at Canning Bridge have been worth a try for bream, while the Canning River has held big schools of mullet and bream fishers and mulloway chasers have been trying their luck between the Mt Henry and Riverton bridges, with some bigger captures rolling through on occasions.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
