Broome catches
An awesome day out on the water for Alex Chambers @boochface alongside the @broome.fishing.club with this cracker of a queenie.

Boats

Sailfish have fished well out from Barred Creek and further north, while out wide on the broken ground red emperor, blue-lined emperor and Rankin cod have been in good numbers. Inshore waters closer to Broome saw Spanish mackerel and long-tail tuna caught, while bluebone have been in good numbers in close as well. The Fingers and Crab Creek have produced a few threadfin salmon, while mud crabs have been in most creek systems. It’s looking like beautiful boating weather this weekend which is a welcome relief after a few weeks of strong winds. It should be a total glass off from this evening until at least Monday with sunny days expected.

Shore-based

@tackleworldbroome team member James took his son Spencer out for a glorious session this week which resulted in this metre-plus threadfin salmon at 80 Mile Beach.

Bream, small queenfish and trevally have been caught from Town Beach Jetty, while the mouth of Barred Creek has produced whiting, as did Cable Beach. Entrance Point has yielded queenfish, while queenfish and trevally have been caught at Gantheaume Point. Eighty Mile Beach has fished well for threadfin salmon with a 106cm model landed this week (as pictured above), while in the Fitzroy River barramundi fishing has been very quiet.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
A rather colourful shark mackerel for 10-year-old Jasper Murphy caught off Tantabiddi on a floating mulie at sunset! A great way to top off the school holidays for the youngster and a special shoutout to Jasper's pop Kevin Murphy who is a cherished volunteer at our Healthway Kids Fishing Clinics.

Boats

Better conditions have fired up the fishing activity on the west side. Big yellowfin tuna have been active between 100-400m and they were kept company by dolphinfish, wahoo and mack tuna. Sailfish numbers have been down, but black marlin around the 50kg mark have been in reasonable numbers starting from 100m depths. Helby Bank has been quite sharky, but it has produced some nice coral trout for those who moved around frequently (try turning your sounder off once you’re fishing). Spanish mackerel numbers here have been down, although some small ones have been taken inshore just behind the reef. Similar to last week, the fishing has generally been better out from Tantabiddi headed south, where coral trout have been active in 20m depths and both Rankin cod and red emperor biting in 30-50m. Deep-droppers have picked up red emperor as well along with saddletail snapper and a few pearl perch. The lagoons around Tantabiddi have produced a few coral trout on the lumps, along with spangled emperor, with weed patches producing some good squid. The Muirons have been firing for Spanish mackerel and the lumps have offered coral trout, spangled emperor, a few Rankin cod and red emperor. In Exmouth Gulf, the shoals have fished well for a mix of school and Spanish mackerel, as well as giant trevally, bluebone and blue-lined emperor. Squid fishing has been good inshore, while mud crabs have been active at the bottom of the Gulf around Whalebone Island, which has also yielded giant trevally and spotted trevally. The forecast is showing low winds until around Sunday morning with a 2m swell, so the boating conditions should be quite pleasant until then.

The ladies up in WA's north certainly showed how it's done on the spear this week! How's this for an absolute donkey of a tusky from @rubixcube_ up in our Pilbara region!

Shore-based

From VLF Bay all the way around the tip of the Cape, giant trevally, bluebone and spangled emperor have been active with the better spots around Mildura Wreck. Down at Tantabiddi it has been mostly spangled emperor along with a few squid when weed patches can be found within casting distance. The town marina has been busy over the school holidays but it has been reliable for small giant trevally and queenfish, along with a few mangrove jack and bream around the pylons. The outside rock wall has produced queenfish and trevally in better sizes and has fished well for squid, as did the light industrial area. At Bundegi, good trevally and queenfish have been feeding on bait schools at first light, while Wapet Creek has offered mud crabs, mangrove jack and bream. The sandy beaches in the Gulf have been producing flathead and whiting, while at Learmonth Jetty it has been a mixed bag of squid, queenfish, trevally and whiting.

This metre-plus queenie had @finhomer6 sweating a tad when it decided to do the run around the pylons at Bundegi, but he stuck the landing!

Kalbarri catches
Shimano ambassador @nickihuntfishing with a silver slab of a mulloway landed on the Shimano Talica 12 and Extraction rod. Nicki will also be at the Australian Fishing Trade Association Public Day on 26 July on the Gold Coast and some of our Recfishwest crew will also be attending, so make sure you come have a yarn if you're there!

Boats

Despite the dirty water a few crews sneaked out this week and found a few northern bluefin tuna off Pot Alley. The water has mostly been too dirty to make trolling worthwhile near town, but out at Red Bluff a few Spanish mackerel have been landed. When conditions allowed it Rankin cod and estuary cod were caught out on the coral, while closer in saw pink snapper and baldchin groper in good numbers. A couple of dhufish were pulled up at the Sand Patch last weekend. Wagoe has enjoyed a good run of decent Spanish mackerel in the 15-25kg range, but north-west blowies have been a nuisance. Despite the swell decreasing from just under 3m the conditions on Saturday look decent for a send out in the boat, with a low easterly wind expected. Early on Sunday should also hold decent conditions before the wind spikes quickly from midday.

Shore-based

The Murchison River has held a bit of everything. Tailor to 70cm have been caught at the river mouth on baitcast mulies, poppers and stickbaits, while chopper tailor have been active at the Sand Spit. The front of the IGA store has yielded good yellowfin whiting, while small skippy have been hitting soft plastics. Cod to 70cm have also been caught at the marina jetty and Sand Spit. There have been a lot of mulloway hard-luck stories too, with good fish lost and a few landed at the river mouth, marina jetty and the Sand Spit. Reasonable bream have been caught from the marina up to Murchison House Station, which has also produced a couple of decent cod. A few blue swimmer crabs have been pulled up from the marina jetties along with mud crabs, which have been caught as far up as Castle Rock. Big swells have ruled out most beach fishing, but pink snapper to 80cm have been landed at Red Bluff and one or two smaller ones have been pulled up from the cliffs.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri.
Geraldton catches

Boats

When crews managed to get out they found good numbers of dhufish up to 9kg around 16km or so from town in quite shallow water, but surprisingly few pink snapper. The Abrolhos Islands have been holding plenty of mackerel and tuna, but the local coast has been quiet. The swell and the wind is undulating like a rollercoaster over the next week and while the northerly wind is relatively low on Saturday, the big 4.5m swell will make it tough going. Most boats will be staying out of the water this week.

Shore-based

Tailor have been hit or miss. Glenfield and Drummond have produced a few when the weed hasn’t been too bad. It’s been a similar story from Coronation Beach up to the Buller River, which has also produced a few mulloway. Whiting catches have been patchy from Separation Point to The Lives, but school and yellowfin whiting either side of 25cm have been caught when clear spots can be found. Skippy to 45cm have been taken from local rock walls and at the Batavia Coast Marina, with many caught on micro jigs and soft plastics. The platform on the north side of the marina has produced lots of pike, some skippy and yellowtail, but blowfish have been a pest. Consider using small metal lures if fishing here as small chopper tailor have been caught there too. Bream fishers have been heading to Port Denison where they’ve found tailor in the marina and the Irwin River, which has produced one or two school mulloway.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

As expected this time of year, the swell can make it difficult to launch and safely leave the bay with trailer boats. Last weekend’s Lancelin Angling Club competition had to be cancelled due to unfavourable conditions. A few boats braved Sundays surge at the beach to launch and saw some great captures, including dhufish well over 10kg, some stonker pink snapper and breaksea cod. Divers also managed to spear some Spanish mackerel behind the reef. Low tides during the afternoons offer a better opportunity to launch off the beach to fish inside the bay, with boats finding a few squid alongside the plentiful snook, herring and skippy. Unfortunately the swell or wind is not looking like easing for the foreseeable future and this weekend's swell is too big for a launch. The jetty should be a reliable option on Saturday for a land-based fish.

Shore-based

Nearshore gutters have fished well along the Back Beach for tailor and school mulloway. If heading north, there’s no clean water until Didie Bay, which is a good option to soak a bait and avoid copious amounts of weed. The beaches have been treacherous, so the trip north is for experienced beach drivers only. Didie Bay has produced sharks and the odd tailor off the cast, with pink snapper from drone drops around 200m offshore. Once past Narrow Neck, some good gutters can be found to the north of Wedge, which have been holding tailor and mostly school mulloway along with the odd larger fish. Fishers have been catching some plump winter sand whiting around the beaches in the bay. The jetty has also been going off, with plenty of herring, skippy, and some tailor to 60cm.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Huge swells and strong winds restricted boats to inshore waters this week. At Lovers Cove, King George whiting to 45cm were active, while those drifting the sand patches off the port rock wall picked up big flathead. Plenty of plump sand whiting have been caught at Chapman Point and West Beach, while Esperance Bay has held big herring, squid and snook. It’s not looking pretty on the forecast again this week unfortunately, but those that are really keen to duck out might have a chance to do so on Saturday arvo.

Shore-based

Salmon and a few tailor have been caught at Fourth Beach, while Roses Beach at high tide has yielded mulloway and gummy sharks. Big holes formed by the blow at Dunns Beach makes it a good prospect for mulloway, gummy sharks and big skippy this weekend if you don’t mind getting wet, while the town foreshore has held King George whiting. At Bandy Creek Boat Harbour skippy, herring, flathead and whiting have been active, while squid have been plentiful halfway up the Town Jetty with bright-coloured jigs the way to go. Bream chasers have done well at Lake Quallilup.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Despite the horrible weather coming in and out some crews got the chance to chase squid at the weekend with Limestone Head, Frenchman Bay and Mistaken Island producing good numbers and sizes. The water has been dirty so brighter jigs in yellows, pinks and whites got the best results, with the 5m depths a good starting point. These locations have also yielded plenty of King George whiting around the 35cm mark, especially near the mussel leases. Water clarity at Middleton and Emu Point has been very poor with very little squid activity taking place. There is no chance of a fish out on the boats this week with the wind, rain and swell looking diabolical. Hopefully there is some reprieve soon. Maybe consider a freshwater fish inland as the trout and redfin perch action has been fantastic this week (as seen in our freshwater section).

Shore-based

Schoolkids on holiday have been enjoying themselves on herring, leatherjackets, bream and whiting at the town marina and Emu Point, which threw up a surprise barracouta this week (slightly different to barracuda), a species much more common in Victorian and Tasmanian waters. Decent squid were landed at the marina and Whalers Cove, with Frenchman Bay also worth a try. Herring have been thick and most sheltered locations should produce a feed, with the odd whiting as bycatch. Big swells and boggy sand ruled out most beach fishing, while bream chasers have been catching fish on the flats of the King River and also in the Kalgan. Most fish have been in the 30-35cm range and baits have outperformed lures. Pink snapper have been schooling at the entrance of Wilson Inlet which is yet to open to the sea. A few resident salmon were landed from Denmark beaches late last week. The rivers and freshwater regions are your best bet this week with horrible weather expected.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
A very nice blue eye trevalla for @tommy_miller91! This fish came courtesy of multitasking on the jig while he was waiting for his bait to get smashed by a swordfish out deep off Bunbury!

Boats

Pink snapper seemed like the only option for crews that found weather windows and headed further out this week. Despite snippets of ideal conditions, dhufish and other demersal species were absent. Thankfully, the pinkies played the game. Pink snapper continued to be reliable close in for the anchor-and-burley crews, but even they were surprised by the lack of other species such as skippy and small Samsonfish. Dinghy fishers in the Leschenault Estuary have been enjoying the school holidays, getting on to herring and small chopper tailor, while squid fishing has been reasonable in Geographe Bay which has also produced herring, a few King George whiting and pink snapper further out around sunset. Very early on Saturday morning looks to be your only window to duck out in the boat this week with the wind and rain all over the place on the remaining days.

Shore-based

The Busso Jetty has maintained its reputation as a pinkie hotspot this week and @josephchapple produced the goods.

Pink snapper continued to fish steadily from Preston Beach all the way through to Dunsborough, with both drone fishers and casters finding them. Murky water has made herring harder to find, but burley thrown into patches of clearer water usually produces a few at beaches closer to Bunbury. Tailor have been quiet along the beaches and there were no reports of mulloway being landed in the run-up to the full moon. Busselton Jetty produced a pink snapper or two on most days along with squid and herring. In the Collie River bream have been caught mainly on baits.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

A rather elongated trout for @max_out_fishing on the diver this week! Both rainbow and brown trout numbers are taking a decent spike in catches and a freshwater session is a good option at the moment if the ocean is looking too grumpy.
Trout catches have improved vastly and have been keeping up with the excellent numbers of redfin perch captures across the freshwater board. Harvey Dam has produced some decent brown trout on a range of lures including soft plastics, with the old-school hard-bodies such as the Rapala CD5 Perch and even bladed lures also working well. Good rainbow trout have been caught at Waroona Dam, while the Collie River, Harvey Dam, Glen Mervyn Dam, Wellington Dam, the Brunswick and Capel rivers have all been the better spots for redfin perch. When the fishing has been slow, rotating through a range of lure styles has often produced results. A crew from Perth fishing along the Colle River on Monday were using Celta spinners to target redfin, but found they couldn’t get away from brown and rainbow trout (not a bad problem to have).
Mandurah and surrounds
@hunter__hebb and his crew decided to punch out into the drizzle and overcast conditions while other boats came back into shore and it paid off beautifully, with this nice pinkie landed among others during a glass off.

Boats: Pink snapper catches have been consistent at the Five-Fathom Bank, with plenty of skippy bycatch and even the odd school of big tailor visiting the burley trail after dark. Daytime fishing has been quiet off Dawesville, but on calm nights dhufish chasers have found fish in 24-30m. Clear patches of the Peel-Harvey Estuary have yielded herring and a few tailor. Saturday should hold the best window this week for the boaties, but every other day is looking rough.

Land-based: Tailor to 70cm have been landed at reefy beaches such as Tims Thicket, Melros and Doddis Beach at Halls Head. Most local beaches have held herring and the odd mulloway has been taken from beaches north of town. Pink snapper action has been much quieter at the town rock walls and the ocean end of the Dawesville Cut, but the rocky ground behind the Cut Golf Course, Tims Thicket and north of Silver Sands has been worth a try. The Murray and Serpentine rivers have been fishing well for big bream and small mulloway. The Dawesville Cut and the Mandurah bridges have offered heaps of small tarwhine, leatherjacket and a few herring.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: When weather windows allowed a send out decent dhufish were taken in 30-40m depths behind Carnac and Garden islands and towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Pink snapper were abundant in these depths as well, while breaksea cod and baldchin groper were also caught. Pink snapper have been in good numbers for inshore fishers around Cockburn Sound at a range of spots. This included off the grain terminal, inside of Garden Island, off the Causeway, off Woodman Point and behind Penguin Island, at the Sisters and the D9. Good skippy continued to dominate the bycatch. Squid chasers have done well over the weed banks in as little as 2m with Mangles Bay, inside of Garden Island, Safety Bay, Penguin Island and Parmelia Bank some of the better spots, thanks to the more sheltered waters being slightly cleaner. Saturday should hold the best weather for the boaties this week, but outside of that is looking wet and windy.

Land-based: Most pink snapper chasers have been targeting the beaches and found good fish at Secret Harbour, Long Point and Port Kennedy. A couple of decent pinkies were also hooked but not landed at Palm Beach Jetty this week. Herring have been plentiful along most beaches and a few big winter tailor have been caught. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have held good numbers of herring, a few chopper tailor on sunset, squid and sand whiting. Woodman Point and the Ammo Jetty have fished well for herring, whiting and a few squid. The rocks at Henderson and Point Peron have produced squid at times also in the cleaner water.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Not a bad Sambo on the Bassman spinnerbait for Dave Ecclestone this week off Perth! Quite the unexpected bycatch that would've put a burn through the biceps, but hats off on this brilliant catch.

Boats

Inshore pink snapper fishers have continued to do well with some of the better spots being Stragglers, the Three-Mile Reef and out from Mindarie and Two Rocks, which has also produced a few dhufish. Pink snapper chasers have also encountered thumping skippy nudging 70cm, small yellowtail kingfish and school-sized Samsonfish. Big King George whiting have been taken inshore at Rottnest Island, while sand whiting have been in good numbers out from Hillarys and City Beach. Squid fishing has been very slow but this is mainly due to the dirty water. Once the calmer conditions return, the water should clear up and the squidding should be back on around the reliable grounds of Fremantle, Cockburn Sound and Rockingham. The only possible window that looks approachable for the boaties this week is Saturday, with a 2.5m swell and low to moderate easterly wind expected, but it will still be rather choppy. Outside of that the wind and swell is all over the shop with a big spike in the swell, wind and rain roaring in on Sunday arvo.

Shore-based

Some very nice tailor turned up in the surf off Perth this week while the swells were up, with Javier Lim landing this 50cm+ beauty. Image courtesy of @nolangoesbeachfishing.

Metro rock walls have produced a steady supply of pink snapper in both rough and calm conditions. Again, the northern rock walls such as Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks have generally fished better, although there have been a couple of red-hot sessions at North Mole. Drone fishers have picked up good pinkies on beaches north of Quinns. Herring have been plentiful at most rock walls and marinas and garfish, skippy, tarwhine, sand whiting and small King George whiting have been caught also. Fremantle Harbour has produced good numbers of herring at night. In the Swan River, the lower reaches have yielded tarwhine, tailor and the odd flathead, with a few flathead also being caught as far up river as Redcliffe. Bream chasers have found some decent fish, but numbers have been well down and they have been spread out throughout the system. Soapy mulloway have been caught between Ascot and Claremont, while school prawns have been scooped at night along the rock wall in East Fremantle. Saturday is looking like the only decent land-based window this week, but it might be a tad difficult casting out over the waves with a 2.5m swell expected and weed likely to be fiddly to avoid. The Swan River might be an easier option.

A big thanks to Compleat Angler Nedlands for their great tips! These guys are all avid fishers, know the best spots for every particular species and have provided great support to Recfishwest and metro fishers for many years. Make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice at their store just off Stirling Highway and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
