Get fired up for some FAD's fishing!
The southern WA FADs fishing season has officially begun, with two Lancelin FADs, five Jurien Bay FADs and three Abrolhos Islands FADs already in the drink and an additional 26 FADs set to be deployed by DPIRD by mid-December between Steep Point and Albany!
The current network of FADs also includes eight new generation reinforced FADs which are permanently deployed off Broome and Dampier!

Spanish mackerel have been active around the moorings at Gantheaume Point, while in Roebuck Bay a few tripletail have been picked up. The odd sailfish and blue marlin have been taken about 50km out west of town, while the inside reefs have produced bluebone and coral trout. Crab and Dampier Creeks have held a mix of threadfin salmon and small barramundi, but they haven’t been biting every day and patience has been required. Mud crabs have been in better numbers in Crab Creek and in the peninsular creeks. Thankfully the westerly winds are relatively low across this weekend before they pick up again early next week so make the most of it. Midday on Sunday looks best if you can manage to launch before then.
Shore-Based
Town Beach Jetty has offered a nice mix this week, including blue salmon, threadfin salmon, javelinfish, flathead, trevally and queenfish. A few whiting have been caught in the holes along the beach on the south side of the jetty, while the odd small barramundi is a chance after dark. Entrance Point has offered a bit of variety too, mainly with trevally and queenfish along with the occasional Spanish flag, coral trout and bluebone. The Fitzroy River has fished very poorly this week, but Willie Creek has held one or two small barramundi.Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Average weather windows on the west side have limited billfishing and crews have been struggling to fish for bottom species, but Spanish mackerel have been in good sizes and numbers at the back of the reef, taking a shine to Samaki trolling minnows and Strada Pro Trackas. At Tantabiddi plenty of squid have been inshore with the odd spangled emperor caught in the lagoons. Only a few crews have tried to get to the islands but sailfish have become more active in the Gulf, especially off Bundegi, and they have mainly favoured small live baits. Squid have been in good numbers close in, while the Shoals have held a few blue-lined emperor. The best weather window off the boats is looking like Tuesday onwards with lighter easterlies expected.
In Exmouth Gulf whiting have been plentiful from Bundegi down to the Bay of Rest, while Learmonth Jetty has fished well for squid and offered a few bream, small queenfish and trevally. Better sized queenies and trevally have been caught at Bundegi boat ramp. Deep in the Gulf fly-fishers have encountered bluebone, while the town marina has produced squid on the outside wall and bream, cod and trevally on the inside. Spangled emperor have been quiet at the tip of the Gulf and down at Tantabiddi, but bluebone have been active in Lighthouse Bay and at Mildura Wreck.These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Thankfully some nice conditions arrived earlier this week which allowed some fun trips out. A couple of boats went to Jakes Bay and Red Bluff and picked up some nice yellowfin whiting, while shore anglers used yaks and surf skis to cross the Murchison River and head to Frustrations and Oyster Reef where they picked up big tailor. Sadly the weather is looking windy and rough this weekend but Tuesday onwards is looking peachy.
Sizeable tailor have been snaffling poppers at the river mouth, while chopper tailor have been active at Red Bluff and Wittecarra in the mornings. Red Bluff has also offered yellowfin whiting on calm mornings. Down at Wagoe a 22kg mulloway was landed last weekend along with tailor, tarwhine, flathead and a few small pink snapper. In the Murchison River bream have been caught at the marina and yellowfin whiting have been active on the Sand Spit. Crabbing has been going well with good numbers of blue swimmer crabs taken this week, while mud crabs were fewer.Shout out to Kalbarri Sports and Dive for their tips! Feel free to venture into the store and ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri.
Howling winds have continued to rule out most boating activity apart from a few crews making brief inshore missions to pull their craypots which have been rewarding. The strong south easterly winds will again limit the fishing this weekend although Tuesday arvo onwards is looking very nice on the forecast.
Reef fishers have been taking advantage of the early morning low tides to land tailor to 60cm at Drummond Cove along with Coronation Beach, Flat Rocks and the Greenough River mouth’s first and second points. Most of these locations have had a few herring mixed in and lots of pike. Reef fishing has also been good on the northern side of Separation Point with good catches of tailor along with herring and whiting. A few pink snapper have been picked up north and south of Drummond and at Coronation. Most of the northern beaches have been plagued by forktail catfish and tailor fishers have been regularly hooking school and shovel-nosed sharks to 2m which have tested their bicep strength. Whiting activity has picked up with fish in the 25-32cm range caught at Drummond Cove and Coronation. There was also some whiting action at the back of the Lives, and at Pages Beach when it isn’t weeded out. Teenagers have landed a few big-eyed trevally in the Batavia Coast Marina, but have reported little squid activity. The recent rain seems to have stirred up the yabbies in the upper parts of the Chapman and Greenough Rivers with quite a few nets sold this week. The lower reaches of the Greenough River also provided interesting fishing. Bream chasers hooked giant herring, while regular herring, whiting and tarwhine were landed near the mouth.

Soaking a bait resulted in this nice Samsonfish for Llewellyn, who enjoyed a top session alongside Peter Fullarton on one of his Tailored Treks missions this week.
Offshore, the main game has been chasing the tuna schools. With floating seaweed making trolling a frustrating exercise, most anglers have done best by casting metals or stickbaits into the bust-ups. Smaller boats and kayaks have been enjoying the safer and very productive waters inside the Bay. A few large squid have shown up over the seagrass late in the afternoons, and there’s been a steady mix of tailor, snook and skippy as well. The southern shallows have been the hotspot for trolling small lures and working around the herring schools. Early on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning looks best on the forecast.
Tailor fishing has been reliable off the jetty, particularly around sunset. Beach casters were also finding good numbers, although the bite windows have been tight and were right on sunrise and sundown. Sizes have settled into a more typical summer pattern, with most tailor around the 40cm mark. Herring have been conspicuous by their absence, with very low numbers reported along the beaches. Thankfully, sand whiting have filled the gap nicely, with excellent-sized fish caught throughout the week and offering a great option for a feed. Small whaler sharks have also been active along the beaches, keeping things interesting for anyone soaking a larger bait.

Yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish have been plentiful at Figure of Eight Island, while Boxer Island has held big breaksea cod and nannygai. Lots of queen snapper and harlequin fish have been caught at Observatory Island, while good mixed bags of demersals and Samsonfish have come from Douglas Patch. Samsonfish of more than 30kg have been landed at Black Island, while the 10-15m depths at Chapman Point have held plenty of sand whiting. King George whiting have been caught at Lovers Cove, while Esperance Bay has held squid, herring and snook. Sunday arvo and Monday morning currently look best on the forecast.
Mulloway up to a metre and gummy sharks have been landed consistently at Israelite Bay, while Thomas River has held 50cm-plus skippy and small gummy sharks. Big schools of salmon have been cruising along Tagon Beach, while Dunn Beach has offered salmon and gummy sharks. Roses and 15-Mile beaches have fished well for gummy sharks and skippy, while salmon have been active at Salmon Beach and 10-Mile Lagoon for the early birds. The town foreshore has yielded good-sized flathead and King George whiting, while sand whiting were abundant at Blue Haven. From the afternoons to after dark, squid and herring have been rewarding anglers at Town Jetty, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has held King George whiting to 40cm. Wheatfield Lake has been the pick off the bream spots.

King George whiting have been fishing well with Mistaken Island, Frenchman Bay and Flat Rock firing, while squid catches have been good at Mistaken Island and Limestone Head. Denmark’s Wilson Inlet has produced King George whiting and pink snapper. Sunday and Monday are looking best on the forecast at this stage.
Squid fishing has been good at the town marina which has also offered herring, skippy and leatherjacket. Squid have been in reasonable numbers at Emu Point, along with plenty of herring and a few whiting, while Samsonfish have been active in the channel, especially at the change of an incoming tide. Frenchman Bay and Whalers Cove have been good for squid, herring and small King George whiting, while Two People Bay has offered squid, King George whiting and sand whiting. Sand Patch and Gull Rock have been worth a crack for herring, skippy, tarwhine and flathead. The King and Kalgan Rivers have held good numbers of bream which have been taking baits as well as soft plastic and small hard-body lures. Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, Trailblazers Albany have loan lifejackets available if you wish to fish off the rocks, but keeping the sand between your toes is always a safer option.
It’s a case of rinse and repeat on the boating front this week. King George whiting and squid have been active on both sides of Bunbury in 8-14m, while the artificial reef has offered plenty of Samsonfish. With warmer days becoming more consistent, it’s probably a good time for dinghy fishers to consider trolling for chopper tailor in the Leschenault Estuary. In Geographe Bay, King George whiting and squid have been the main game, while yak fishers have been getting the same species off Busselton and Siesta Park, starting from about 4m. The mornings are looking best over the coming week before the sea breeze picks up from around 11am.
Yellowfin whiting continued to fish well in the Leschenault Estuary with the tings widespread and more bigger models over 30cm being landed. Beaches either side of Bunbury have offered good-sized chopper tailor and soapy mulloway along with a few sand whiting and herring. Busselton Jetty has been consistent for squid, while throwing in a bit of burley there has also been bringing in schools of herring.

Redfin perch catches have been good at Harvey Dam, the Collie River town site and all around the Pemberton region. Rainbow trout catches have been steady at Honeymoon Pool on the Collie River and also at Waroona and Harvey dams. If fishing the dams, trolling around the edges with vibe lures in 4-5m depths is a good way of landing redfin perch for those in kayaks. Some fishers have also noted decent redfin perch were coming out from the weeds in the shallows of the dams to take small lures and plastics retrieved along the edges.

Boats
King George whiting have been the main species targeted with the broken ground out from Dawesville and towards the Bouvards producing good fish. Decent skippy have also been active there, while sand whiting chasers continued to do well at the Five-Fathom Bank, in line with the Mary Street Lagoon. Attention is also being drawn to tuna activity with trolling lures and small stickbaits being sold, but no decent catch reports yet. The warmer weather expected over the next four days might spice them up though. With the good flushout of dirty water from the Peel-Harvey Estuary squid catches are expected to improve both inshore and in the estuary system. The estuary’s drop-offs have been fishing very well for chopper tailor, bull herring, big yellowtail grunter and juvenile salmon, with some of the juvenile salmon pushing 60cm. Sunday morning might produce an okay window but Monday through to Thursday looks great on the current forecast.
Tailor fishing has been very hit or miss from local beaches with the northern beaches probably the better bet, only because the southern ones have held much more weed. South of town drone fishers have found pink snapper action to have dropped right off. Fishing at the Dawesville Cut has improved with herring being caught during the day and chopper tailor at night. Chopper tailor have been in good numbers at the town bridges, but many have been undersized. Tailor over 40cm have been enthusiastically smashing poppers, Halco Twistys and stickbaits cast from the estuary rock walls, while bream have been in good numbers in both the Murray and Serpentine Rivers along with soapy mulloway and surprising numbers of yellowfin whiting. The warm weather has brought yellowfin whiting chasers on to the estuary flats in big numbers with fish well distributed throughout the system. All the usual haunts have been producing, with the key to cracking the code being finding the right retrieve style to fire the fish up.

A few tuna have turned up towards the Five-Fathom Bank and behind Garden Island, while tailor have been caught in reefy structure around Garden Island. Big King George whiting have been caught behind Garden Island, towards Carnac Island and also at the Five, while smaller KG’s have been mixed in with herring and sand whiting in Mangles Bay, on Parmelia Bank and behind Penguin Island. Squid fishing has been quiet, but yak fishers have been finding good numbers in Safety Bay. The mornings across this weekend might provide brief windows but all of next week is looking better on the forecast.
Tailor catches have been good at the Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Warnbro beaches with a few herring and sand whiting mixed in. Warmer weather has improved fishing at Penguin Island where a few flathead and flounder are starting to turn up among the herring and sand whiting catches. Woodman Point along with the Ammo, Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have all held the odd squid along with herring and sand whiting, but squid fishing has been better at Point Peron.

While Samsonfish have been a tad elusive this week, Scotty from @saltfix has been regularly finding these hard-fighting specimens off Perth, with live baits working best to entice a strike.
Offshore it has been very quiet on the Samsonfish and tuna front and there has been little feedback on the crayfish, suggesting many crews are holding out for the start of the whites run. Herring, squid and sand whiting have been the main catches out from South Fremantle, while the bays at Rottnest have held herring, squid and King George whiting in great numbers. The Windmills has offered a mix of both whiting species. Sand whiting have been active in 10-30m depths out from Mindarie and also in 15-20m off City Beach. Tailor have been caught at Stragglers on a mix of stickbaits and bait casting. It will be a tad choppy out on the water this weekend with mostly moderate south-easterly winds expected, but the early mornings on Monday through to Thursday are expected to be nice and flat.
Rock groynes and the Fremantle Moles have produced mainly herring and skippy, with the odd late-afternoon tailor. A heads up that South Mole will be closed for two months from 1 December to 31 January to accommodate grandstands being built for the crowds at the Oracle Perth Sail Grand Prix, but it has thrown up a few squid. Blue mackerel have also been in the bycatch at North Mole. After dark in Fremantle Harbour fishers have targeted mainly herring. Tailor, herring and sand whiting have been caught along the Swanbourne to Scarborough stretch in the mornings, while bigger tailor have been caught around Two Rocks. The Swan River has been the most consistent spot this week with flathead and flounder numbers starting to improve in the lower reaches including at Point Walter, Applecross, Ardross and Rocky Bay, despite many anglers spooking more fish than they are landing. Flathead chasers using vibes have been picking up a lot of small yellowfin whiting. Flathead have also been consistent in the Canning River between the Mt Henry and Canning Bridges and in the Swan at Burswood. This season flathead seem to favouring soft plastics and jigs, but anglers using vibe lures and hard-bodies are starting to get their share now. With plenty of bait schools about tailor have come as far up river as the Burswood flats and they have also been caught from the flats and drop-offs at Canning Bridge, the Narrows, Nedlands and Claremont. Schools of bony herring have made their way up the Swan and mulloway have followed them with good-sized croakers being taken on bait and lures as far up as Maylands. Bream fishing has been poor in the Canning River, but in the Swan they have been fishing well between the Causeway and Guildford both on the flats and around structure. The mornings between Monday and Thursday look best for land-based fishing as well.
