Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
It's slowly starting to feel like winter time here while fishing in Islamorada. The past week we had northerly winds and the air temperature dropped down a couple degrees, really making for some gorgeous weather. The mixed bag of fish has continued to be caught here while florida keys fishing in October. The majority of the boats have been focusing on fishing the reef, but a handful have still wandered "offshore". Yesterday the sailfish turned on for the boats that put their time in. The Kalex was ready for action and they managed to release 4 sailfish, both the Relentless and Miss Islamorada (yes the party boat) also released a sailfish.
Now mid October is getting to be on the late side to consistently catch mahi, but a few boats have done decent the past week. A couple boats will hit schools of fish, and a couple boats won't. But hey, that's why it's called fishing, and if you want to try for a particular species, you have to put your time in. The Gold Digger was out on a couple of trips this past week and caught about 15 keeper mahi each trip, mostly schoolies (3-5 lbs) , but he did gaff a few that were bigger. He also had a couple blackfin tuna in the 10 - 15 lb range, as well as a nice mutton snapper his last trip. The Relentess had a handful of mahi yesterday and a couple tuna as well. Then they hit the reef for a little bit in the afternoon and caught a few nice mutton snapper. The Redfish also had a couple nice mutton snapper yesterday, as well as some yellowtail snappers and a couple king mackerel. The Gon Fishin V had a few blackfin tunas and then did some "deep dropping" (bottom fishing in 400-600'), and had a few tilefish, a couple yellowedege grouper, and some rose porgy.
A few days back the Kalex was fishing for yellowtail snapper, when they noticed an 8' tiger shark in their chum line! They were quick to get ready, and put a shark bait out. Within a few minutes they hooked the tiger shark. After a good fight they got some great pictures of this beatiful fish before releasing it to fight another day. The customer also decided to mount it, after seeing how awesome the fish looked in the water all "striped" up, now he'll have story to tell all his friends! The Kalex also had a birthday boy out in the afternoon and put him on a big mutton snapper as well as some more yellowtail snapper for his friends.
We were out daytime swordfishing on the Bn'M II a couple days ago, and had a few "cheap" sword bites that we just couldn't connect on. However, we did catch a large bigscale pomfret, which weighed 22.5 lbs. It's an unusual fish and we have only caught a handful over the years. It looks like the reef fishing should continue to get better and better as we get closer to winter time, and I think we'll continue to the Islamorada Sailfishing continue to improve (especailly if we get a cold front). The strictly business had a limit of big vermillion snappers a few days ago just outside the reef as well. The mahi fishing will probably be spotty the next couple weeks, but if we have an east or southeast wind, I wouldn't be suprised to see a few. The good thing about going on an Islamorada Fishing Charter is that if one thing doesn't bite, we usually have an option to try for something else!
Till Next Time,
Capt. Nick Stanczyk
