11-21-13 Offshore/Reef/Deep Sea Fishing Report

 | By Seamus on 11/16/2013 11:45:30 AM | Views (244)

There was some great weather here the past week while fishing in Islamorada. With the nice weather came some great fishing days too! Last weekend there was a big push of sailfish. When we target sailfish we are typically fishing near the reef (only 4 - 5 miles off shore). Sometimes people are confused when we say "reef fishing" , they think they will only be bottom fishing, but that's not the case! This time of year our "offshore boats" primarily focus on the reef, doing everything from bottom fishing, trolling, kite fishing, and sight fishing. Anyhow the light switch turned on last Saturday and Sunday and many boats racked up the sailfish releases. The Catch 22 had Paul out by himself, and he managed 11 sailfish releases! They also had a few mahi. The Reel McCoy Also had 9 Sailfish releases. Sailfishing is all catch and release here in the Florida Keys, so once the mate touches the "leader", it's considered a caught fish. We don't bring many fish on board, as it's best to take a picture in the water to ensure a healthy release. The Relentless also released a couple sailfish that day in addition to limiting out on nice yellowtail snapper. On Sunday both the Reel McCoy and Relentless each released 5 sailfish and had a few mahi, and the Bn'M II released 3 sailfish and had some yellowtail snapper for dinner. The mahi will continue to thin out as we get into winter, so I wouldn't make them your primary target, although there's always a shot at a catching a few. The Reel McCoy had another big day releasing 8 more sails two days ago, the Bn'M had released 2 sailfish, and the Gon Fishin had a great catch of dinner fish, including some really nice yelloweye (silk) snapper in the 3 - 4 range. As all good things though, the "bite" simmers down usually after a few great days until we have another change of weather. Yesterday the fishing was still decent, but not quite as good as the days prior. There was a few sailfish released amongst the fleet, The Reel McCoy released 2 and the Relentless released 1. There was good actoin bottom fishing though and the Catch 22 had plenty of yellowtail snapper for dinner, as did the Relentless. The Catch 22 also reported finding a school of cobia, which were fun to catch, but all were a little small to keep. Capt. Skip Nielsen on his bay boat "Foxy Lady" took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and went outside the reef and did hook up and release a triple header of sailfish with the owner's of FOX fishing tackle. The Bn'M and Fearless took also made trips to the Hump the past couple of days, and there was a good bite of blackfin tuna early in the morning. They had between 10 - 15 blackfins anywhere from 3 - 15 lbs. When your ready to book your Islamorada Deep Sea Fishing Trip give us a call at bud n mary's marina, 305 664 2461 and we'll set you up with a great boat!

Tight Lines,

Capt. Nick Stanczyk
