Broome catches
You can see why this is one of the most popular land-based spots in Broome, with @woody_49 landing two cracking jacks at 50cm and 55cm.

Boats

Bit of a quiet week for the boaties around Broome although the weather on Saturday until around 3pm looks rather inviting if you wish to duck out. Sailfish have been encountered in good numbers out wide north of town, along with wahoo, Spanish mackerel and cobia. In Roebuck Bay tripletail have been caught around the moorings and barramundi have been taken in Dampier Creek. Those south-westerly winds will start to ramp up from Sunday right throughout the week though so tomorrow could be your last comfortable window for a while.

Shore-based

Mangrove jack have been caught at the Port Jetty along with a few trevally. Better trevally and queenfish have been caught at Entrance Point, while the Town Beach Jetty has held a few bream, javelinfish and small trevally. The creeks have been quiet, but Willie Creek should be holding a few mangrove jack. There were no barramundi reports from the Fitzroy River this week unfortunately.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
The usual order goes like this: 1) You see a Spanish mackerel leap metres out of the water with your lure in it's mouth 2) everyone on the boat swears or yells 'WHOA' 3) your reel starts to scream. Image: @halcotackle.

Boats

Conditions have been a challenge around Exmouth lately and that’s limited billfishing activity on the west side. Bigger boats that got out and fished on the bottom did well on goldband snapper in 80m-plus and found good numbers of red emperor, Chinaman and Rankin cod closer in. Spanish mackerel have been quiet, but wahoo have been active on Helby Bank. At Winderabandi Point spangled emperor have been snaffling Ocean’s Legacy stickbaits in 3m depths with a few golden trevally keeping them company. At the Muirons spangled emperor, sizeable coral trout and the odd Rankin cod have been in good numbers in the shallower waters and a few big giant trevally have popped up as well. In Exmouth Gulf the shoals and waters closer in have offered blue-lined emperor and school mackerel, while King Reef has produced golden trevally and a few cobia with soft plastics working nicely. Smallish coral trout and Rankin cod have been frequenting the shoals as well but spearfishers have been getting them in better sizes. Squid have been about in good numbers relatively close to shore. The mornings certainly look best over the coming days around Exmouth although that swell is still hovering around the 2m mark so aim to get in before that afternoon breeze swings through. The Gulf side should be a little more calm once that south-westerly swings around.

Shore-based

For fishers keeping the sand between their toes, queenfish have been active along most of Exmouth Gulf, from Oysters down to just shy of Learmonth. Bundegi boat ramp has fished very well for them and one angler pulled out a 15kg tuna from among the queenies, which he released after a quick snap. The flats south of Bundegi have offered a few small giant trevally and fly-fishers around there have picked them up on the higher end of the tides. Plenty of bait has been hanging off Learmonth Jetty but nothing big of note has been landed there recently, although whiting, bream and the odd squid have been caught. Whiting have been active around Wapet Creek along with a few small mangrove jack and cod. At Mildura Wreck spangled emperor have been taken along with queenfish, while a few big giant trevally have been sighted. At the town marina fishing has been best on the inside, near the entrance, where cod, trevally and queenfish have been caught. Trevally have been the main fare at Tantabiddi.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Pemberton Trout Festival 2024 highlights!

We love this event and so do the locals! See you in 2025 and click on the video above to see why this event is growing every year!
A huge Recfishwest thanks to the big crowd of people who rolled up their sleeves and helped us stock hundreds of trout over the weekend for the third annual Pemberton Trout Festival!

This is how you celebrate and bolster our fantastic South-West freshwater fishery in style and we’d love to see even more of this – more fish stocked and more freshwater impoundments opened up for fishing.

This great family-friendly event would not have been possible without the brilliant work from DPIRD's Pemberton Hatchery team, along with our stocking partners Southern Forests Freshwater Angling Club, Daiwa Australia, the Shire of Manjimup, Australian Trout Foundation Inc, and Western Australian Trout & Freshwater Angling Association.

Check out the highlights in the video above and go wet a line! 🎣

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Big swells have kept most boats on trailers and the weather windows have mainly been used for pulling craypots. There have been no reports of tuna or Spanish mackerel activity but Samsonfish figured prominently among the demersal by-catch before the ban kicked in, especially offshore from the Blue Holes. Both mornings this weekend could see decent windows before the breeze kicks in around 11am.

Shore-based

Despite the big swells the beaches have been fishing well for tailor. Those throwing Halco Twistys and poppers between the sets at Red Bluff have been picking up big tailor. Red Bluff has also offered large herring along with mulloway in the 80-90cm range in the mornings, while at the Shark Fin area of the Bluff a decent pink snapper was taken this week. Pink snapper have also been caught at Goats Gulch and Pot Alley when the swells have eased. In the Murchison River yellowfin whiting up to 30cm have been taken at the Sand Spit, while bream have been in reasonable numbers up river, as have mud crabs.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
This week has been a cracker for croakers up the coast and @mat.svenson landed this beauty one evening from a nice gutter off a Geraldton beach.

Boats

Demersal fishers enjoyed a great finish to the season on Sunday and Monday with pink snapper abundant in 40m depths either side of town, while at Dongara they were in much closer. Dhufish were also prolific, mostly in the 6-10kg range, while baldchin groper and coral trout were also in good numbers. Now that demersals are off limits, squid will no doubt be targeted and they were fishing quite well from Pages Beach to the Point Moore lighthouse before the water became murky. The inshore reefs are also a good option for skippy, pike and tailor, while the sand holes should offer decent whiting. It's looking pretty good on the forecast until very early on Sunday morning before the wind and swell spike upwards.

Shore-based

At the Greenough River mouth mulloway up to 16kg and reasonable tailor have been caught, while a couple of big tailor and a decent pink snapper were landed at Lucy's early in the week. Tailor catches have generally been widespread. Tarcoola Beach has offered a few in the mornings but weed has been a nuisance at times. Weed has also been an issue at Drummond Cove but good tailor have been taken in the afternoons, along with soapy mulloway, while north of Drummond to Coronation pink snapper have been landed. The eastern breakwater has offered tailor, pike and the odd skippy, while The Lives has held school whiting. Better-sized tailor have been caught at Greys Bay, some nudging 50cm. At the Batavia Coast Marina squid fishing had been good before the water became murky.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Douglas came up for a fish with Peter Fullarton recently, casting whiting baits for tailor in the bombing range gutters before his wish was granted!

Boats

Tuna schools have been widespread and the weather is looking fantastic this Saturday which is great news as Lancelin Angling Club will be holding their ‘Tuna Shootout’, taking advantage of their abundance at this time of year as an alternative during the demersal ban period. The season ended with plenty of pink snapper featuring in the bags and some nice dhufish around 15kg had been caught from 100m depths. King George whiting have been in good numbers in and outside the bay. Crayfish have been moving close to shore with catches likely to improve over the next couple of weeks with the darkening of the moon phase.

Shore-based

Some good catches of King George whiting have come from the sheltered southern bay beaches mixed with herring and skippy. Tailor have not been in huge numbers, although were a reliable proposition with at least a few fish coming from most sessions around sunrise or sunset. Chopper tailor around the 35-40cm have been along the open beaches, while larger tailor over 50cm have come from the gutters. Weed was a problem close to town and soft beaches saw a lot of 4WD’s requiring rescue while out searching for that clean hole. The beaches will require a 4WD with a decent clearance height and soft tyres around 12psi this weekend, or alternatively try running around the back tracks to find a spot.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
First week back on home turf for @lachy_warren and he found the bream were firing on all cylinders this week!

Boats

Samsonfish have been caught at Black and Lion islands, and nannygai to 3.5kg have been taken at Boxer Island. Good mixed bags have come from Douglas Patch. Cull and Rabbit islands have offered big blue groper and queen snapper, while squid have been holding in deeper water at Cook Rocks. On the whiting front, thumping King George whiting have been taken at Flat Rocks and Lovers Cove, and chunky sand whiting have been caught at Wylie Bay and Fourth Beach. Esperance Bay has held squid, again in deeper water, snook and herring. This weekend is looking like a cracker for the boats so make the most of it!

Shore-based

Good mulloway and gummy sharks have been landed at Dunns Beach, with mulloway and big skippy being mainstays at Thomas River. Roses Beach has been a hotspot for big skippy, salmon and smaller gummy sharks. The first stretch of Wylie Bay has held big sand whiting, while Blue Haven offered large herring. On the jetties and breakwalls, squid and garfish have been caught at the Town Jetty early in the mornings, meanwhile, Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has held King George whiting and flathead. Bream fishers have done well at Woody Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Now that's a proper kraken of a squid for @alex_bolton15 at Emu Point!

Boats

King George Sound has fished well for squid, King George whiting and sand whiting, while Two Peoples Bay has offered King George whiting and squid. At Cheynes Beach crews have tangled with queen snapper, pink snapper and breaksea cod. Last week a crew found a weather window at Windy Harbour and got into nannygai, breaksea cod, harlequin fish and queen snapper. It should line up very nicely for the boats on the weather forecast this weekend (especially Sunday) although the swell should hover around 2.5m.

Shore-based

Around town it has been the usual fare of squid, herring and small King George whiting with the town marina, Frenchman Bay and Emu Point among the better spots. At Little Beach herring and skippy have been caught, while a few tailor have shown up at Sand Patch. Cheynes Beach has offered herring, flathead and tarwhine, while salmon have been caught at Bremer Bay. The King and Kalgan rivers have held bream and the odd mulloway has turned up in the Kalgan. Bream and tarwhine have been caught in Torbay Inlet, while rock platforms out of town have produced a few Samsonfish but make sure you analyse conditions on arrival, fish with a friend, wear a lifejacket along with the right footwear and let people know where you're going.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Experienced angler Mitchell Cooper @mitchcooper_fishing1885 has been ducking inland in our South-West region to slow roll hard body lures, which he feels is the most effective technique to get the redfin fired up. But he swears that if they are quiet the @atomicfishing bream shad can buy the ticket to the show!

Boats

Most crews did well on pink snapper and dhufish before the demersal closure but since then tuna have been a good option. Plenty have been found 3-10km offshore on both sides of Bunbury by crews keeping an eye out for working birds. The tuna have been feeding on whitebait and the like, so 10g or 15g Halco Twistys or 60mm hard-bodied are the ideal lures to target them with. Tuna have been in good numbers in Geographe Bay as well. King George whiting were also prominent and they will definitely be worth targeting in Geographe Bay, inshore south of Bunbury and close in at Augusta. Chasing squid has been hard work around Bunbury but not so much in Geographe Bay, where kayak fishers have done well on them close in. Saturday is looking better on the forecast before the breeze roars in on Sunday.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting numbers in the estuary at Bunbury have improved but most have been caught on small vibes rather than surface lures. At the Bunbury Cut, herring, small chopper tailor, tarwhine, bream and juvenile salmon have been caught, while herring, sand whiting and chopper tailor have been in good numbers at Dalyellup and on Bunbury’s Back Beach. Squid have been plentiful at Busselton Jetty which has also offered good numbers of herring. Samsonfish have been caught at the end of the jetty but they have become a bit skittish. Live baits have worked best on them.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

@alex__vermeulen had a flick under one of the South-West bridges and plucked this stunner of a brown trout from the shallows over the weekend!
There has been a very good run of big redfin perch at Wellington Dam, with kayak fishers using soft plastics, artificial prawns and micro jigs to get among some giants well into the mid-40 centimetres in the deeper sections. Redfin also been active around the Collie town site and in Lake Kepwari. The top side of Wellington Dam had rainbow trout and the odd brown. Redfin perch have been in reasonable numbers at Harvey Dam, while Drakesbrook Weir and Logue Brook Dam have fished well for rainbow trout and a few browns after a spate of insect hatchings. Down in the Southern Forests region streams and rivers are still flowing strongly with better trout and perch captures coming the bends in the water courses where the flow is not as strong. Lefroy Brook has been consistent for redfin perch and trout.
Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Boats: The dhufish grounds off Dawesville that produced well last week are also the spots from which to target big King George whiting, which featured prominently among the demersal by-catch before the season closed. Decent King George whiting also have been found closer in on the rubbly and weedy ground between the shore and Bouvard Reef and the shore and Five-Fathom Bank, with 5-8m depths a good starting point. Plenty of good skippy have been on Five-Fathom and Samsonfish have shown up there as well, while inside the Five and near the Avalon reefs plenty of sand whiting have been caught. Tuna are another good option and they have been taken on the troll at the back of the Five-Fathom Bank, either on skirts or hard-bodied lures such as Rapalas or Gillies Smilin’ Jacks. Squid fishing has come good too with the weed beds off Avalon and Falcon fishing well. Good chopper tailor have turned up in the estuary, feeding on schools of whitebait, but getting past the hordes of herring has been a battle. Bigger lures such as Smilin’ Jacks have certainly helped catch more tailor, or for surface-strike action try a 90mm Bassday Sugapen. Saturday looks great on the forecast.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting continue to tease but good catches have come from Point Grey, the estuary side of Falcon and the flats both north and south of the Novara boat ramp. Surface lures have accounted for plenty of tings and so too have small vibes, but they usually get snaffled by King George whiting first. Herring have been hard to avoid on the flats and a few flounder and juvenile salmon have been taken as well. Bream chasers have found fish well up the Serpentine and Murray rivers. At the Dawesville Cut and Mandurah bridges herring and small tailor have been the main fare. Tailor action from beaches north of town has slowed, but big tailor have shown up at White Hills. Getting a feed of herring has been fairly easy on most local beaches and both sand whiting and yellowfin whiting are a chance at Avalon, Melros and Falcon.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Crews that did well on pink snapper and dhufish last weekend have started to target more humble fare now the demersal ban is in place. They have found some good King George whiting between Garden Island and the Five-Fathom Bank, at Mangles Bay, inside of Garden Island and on Parmelia Bank, along with some decent skippy. Squid have been fishing well too, often in just 2m. Better spots have been out from Woodman Point, in Cockburn Sound, Mangles Bay and inside of Garden Island, with these locations also producing lots of sand whiting and herring. Exposed reefs around Mewstones could be worth a crack for a feed of tailor or yellowtail kingfish. Saturday's forecast should see it looking very nice on the water.

Land-based: The tail-end of the midweek cold front produced a few pink snapper at Secret Harbour, which has also been fishing well for tailor up to 50cm, mainly in the evenings. Soapy mulloway have been keeping the tailor company. Long Point and Port Kennedy have also offered tailor, while herring have been consistent at most beaches and whiting have started to turn up on the warmer days. Woodman Point has yielded herring and garfish and a few squid, while the Ammo Jetty has offered mainly herring and squid while also holding lots of scaly mackerel. Rockingham and Palm beach jetties have been much quieter than usual but Point Peron has been good for squid and herring.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
@saltfix has mastered finding the yellowtail kingfish near the exposed reefs around Perth and this beauty smashed a pilchard on 20lb line after he wafted a pilchard back towards the reef. A good tactic if they fail to strike the poppers.

Boats

Crews found it hard to get past pink snapper last weekend before the demersal season closed. They found plenty close in around the 20-30m depths, with burley bringing them around, along with skippy and Samsonfish in a range of sizes. Big King George whiting were also caught in the 30m depths and smaller models were found inshore of South Fremantle, Rottnest Island, Ocean Reef and Hillarys. At Rottnest the KG's were kept company by herring and skippy. Sand whiting were in reasonable numbers at the Windmills, mixed in with KG's, and also turned up off City Beach and South Fremantle. Dirty water has slowed squid activity but South Fremantle, the bays at Rottnest and Hillarys have fished OK. A few tuna and Samsonfish have been taken at Rottnest’s West End, while Stragglers has produced tailor and skippy. Chopper tailor have been picked on the troll in the Swan River from the Narrows downstream. In the mornings they have favoured cloudy conditions, while the sea breeze often brings them on the bite in the afternoons. Saturday should see it remain relatively flat on the water with a gentle westerly wind helping you cruise back to shore in the afternoon. The wind will come roaring in on Sunday with rain so it's best to avoid it. Next week is looking choppy but it should warm up by next weekend.

Shore-based

Fremantle’s North Mole has been throwing up the odd pink snapper since the midweek blow but not the numbers or sizes of last week. Pink snapper have also been taken from the north metro rock walls and beaches, especially around Mindarie. These locations have also held big tailor.  Both North and South moles have offered plenty of herring but dirty water has made squid fishing difficult. It’s a similar story from the rock walls and marinas further south. Very good tailor up to 70cm have been taken from Port Beach up to Floreat in the afternoons, with Cottesloe the pick of the spots. In the mornings these locations have produced smaller tailor when it has been cloudy and good numbers of herring. Most of the tailor have been taken on baits but a few have fallen to CID Shiversticks. The Swan River has offered excellent tailor fishing with a few around Burswood but most of the better fish were from the Narrows downstream, with Canning Bridge starting to produce a few. Wading out to the drop-offs and casting surface lures has worked well. The Narrows has also fished well for flathead, as did the Causeway, Heirisson Island and the Burswood flats. Plenty of flatties have been taken on soft plastics and artificial prawns. In the same areas soapy mulloway have shown a liking for paddletail soft plastics, while for bream fishers once again it has been a matter of targeting structure and deeper water. Heirisson Island, the Causeway, Canning Bridge, Mt Henry Bridge in the Canning River, Burswood, Maylands and Garratt Road Bridge have produced good fish at times. A few flounder have turned up in the Swan’s lower reaches and perhaps the flats there are starting to fire up – with a fly-fisher using a worm pattern hooking a few flathead, along with mullet and a small giant herring. It should still be easy to cast off the beach given the gentle north-westerly winds on the foreacast and 1.4m swell.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
