Broome catches
Reef Chief Australia just keeps uploading content making us want to visit the Kimberley! Check out their latest upload with this beaut tripletail!

Boats

Strong winds have restricted most fishing to Roebuck Bay which has been holding big numbers of school mackerel. A few threadfin salmon and blue-nosed salmon have been caught on the outgoing tide at Dampier Creek on dead baits and old-school barra lures, while Dampier Creek has also held plenty of mud crabs. Queenfish have been caught just out from the Port Jetty.

Shore-based

The Port Jetty has produced some good barramundi at night as well as mangrove jack around the pylons. Decent bluebone have been hooked and lost there as well, while big giant trevally have been hooked but most have proven unstoppable. At Entrance Point, queenfish and trevally have been landed along with school mackerel. Bream and javelin fish have been the main catches at the Town Beach Jetty. Willie Creek has held queenfish and trevally near the mouth and mangrove jack further up, while barramundi have been taken in the freshwater pools. Threadfin salmon have been caught at Jacks Creek and Thangoo on the outgoing tide, while the better barramundi spots in the Fitzroy River have been Pelicans and Telegraph Pool. A few threadfin salmon and blue-nosed salmon have been taken at Eighty Mile Beach.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
The unprofessional Travellers were playing a game to guess the fish, so in that case we're going to ask the same question... Do you know the name of the fish?

Boats

Exmouth Gulf has held big schools of school mackerel with a quite a few Spanish mackerel mixed in, while on the shoals and over patches of broken ground Rankin cod have been in good numbers and have been taken on big white paddletail soft plastics and Nomad Squidtrex vibes. Coral trout up to 8kg have been keeping the Rankin company, along with a few cobia. On the edges of Camplin and Cooper shoals and at King Reef good numbers of golden trevally have been caught. Inshore squid catches have been steady and on the current line abut 2km offshore a bit of burley has brought in good numbers of chunky garfish. Deeper in the gulf fly-fishers have encountered bluebone on the offshore flats, while a few blue swimmer crabs have turned up at the bottom of the gulf in 5-7m. Queenfish to 70cm have been kicking around the top of the gulf at VLF Bay. At the islands a few red emperor have been caught but sharks have been a problem. On the plus side big 20kg Spanish mackerel have been landed along with a few wahoo. On the west side blue marlin have fishing has been reasonable but they have been taken way out, in 600-800m. A few black marlin, sailfish and dolphinfish have been taken in 50-250m and crews keeping an eye out for bait schools have encountered big tuna. Lots of goldband snapper have been caught in 80-110m and ruby snapper have been taken in in the 200m depths. Big Rankin cod averaging 70cm have been sitting deep in 80-130m. Decent Spanish mackerel have been taken towards Helby Bank, while good numbers of spangled emperor and a few coral trout have been caught in the lagoon at Tantabiddi and further out from there some big queenfish have been landed.

Shore-based

Spangled emperor catches have been very good from the shore with VLF Bay, Tantabiddi and Yardie Creek among the better spots. Four-inch soft plastics and 100mm stickbaits have accounted for plenty of fish. A few cod have been at these locations and the odd bluebone has been caught on imitation crab lures. Whiting have been prolific in the gulf from town all the way down past Learmonth and have been caught on peeled prawns and tiny stickbaits. The gulf has fished well for squid with better spots including Learmonth, Bundegi, the town marina and the light industrial area. A few bream have been hanging at Learmonth Jetty, while small trevally and queenfish have been caught at Bundegi. The town marina has reopened after a crocodile took residence there last week and has produced its usual fare of small cod, bream and trevally. A live bait fished off the outside rock wall has produced the odd school mackerel and bigger queenfish.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Gotta love this!

Recfishwest is proud to support this great long-running kids fishing comp in Kalbarri with one of our community grants and on the ground helping out.

Brillant turn-out despite the "fresh" weather conditions! Hats off to Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Inc. for another fantastic whiting comp and thanks once again for having us.

Keep up the great work!

Boats

Pink snapper have dominated catches north and south of town, with good numbers caught out from the cliffs and at Sand Patch. North of town baldchin groper catches have been good but dhufish have been hard to find.  A few crews jigging at the back of the Blue Holes have been smoked by what may have been super-sized Samsonfish.

Shore-based

The cliffs have fished very well with big tailor, pink snapper and a few baldchin groper being caught at Mushroom Rock and Pot Alley. A decent-sized spangled emperor was dropped at Pot Alley as well. Back Beach has fished well for big tailor and on the other side Oyster Reef has produced quite a few 60cm-plus models along with pink snapper. A bit further north some decent school mulloway have been landed. Wittecarra and Red Bluff have held smaller tailor, while at Wagoe pink snapper, good tailor and school mulloway have been caught. Whiting catches have been good in the Murchison River and the final school holiday whiting contest last week produced good numbers of yellowfin whiting at the Sand Spit, along with nice mixed bags of cod, bream and chopper tailor. Better bream have been caught around structure further up the river but mulloway catches have slowed. Mud crabs have been caught in river and the odd blue swimmer has been among them, while chopper tailor have been biting at the town marina in the evenings.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Pink snapper have been prolific north-west and and south-west of town in 8-9m out to 45m. Dhufish catches have been good as well south-west of town and north of Coronation with many fish in 8-12kg range. Elsewhere, dhufish have been quite small. With plenty of bait schools about schools of tuna have been widespread towards South West bank and west of Drummond, while a crew trolling at the back of Point Moore hit upon a schools of Spanish mackerel. Off Horrocks good numbers of pink snapper and baldchin groper have been taken.

Shore-based

When the swells has been down Drummond Cove towards Coronation Beach and north to Buller River have fished well for 40-50cm tailor, while the northern parts have produced exceptional mulloway in excess of 20kg after dark. School-sized mulloway up to a metre have come from the southern sections. Some good pink snapper have been caught at these beaches as well, while yellowfin whiting to 35cm have benen caught aong the same stretch, especially at Morning Reef. The western end behind The Lives has produced chopper tailor most evenings and Pages beach has offered some as well but not as consistently. Weed has been a problem south of town, and it has been best to check conditions beforehand, but Tarcoola and Southgates have offered tailor in the mornings, while the Greenough River mouth has produced them in the evenings.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Young Ethan was super excited to tick mulloway off the bucket list!

Boats

The beach was packed with boat trailers last weekend showing just how important demersal species are to small coastal towns like Lancelin. Saturday’s competition at the Angling Club was well patronized, although many were reporting the fishing had been a tough day where it had been difficult to find key species other than snapper. The snapper were caught from a wide range of depths throughout the week from 5-200m. Tuna were very widespread. Casting small metal lures or stickbaits to the schools early in the mornings was getting the best results, but as the sun has been rising schools have been more likely to spook at approaching boats.  King George whiting have been found from the bays shallows and along the sand holes in 10m depths just outside the bay.

Shore-based

The beaches didn’t fare well after last weeks storm with the worst level of seaweed along the nearshore we have seen all year. Despite the weed, searching around found a few places a line could be cast resulting in mulloway and tailor catches. Lure casters, were able to overfish the weed, having success casting poppers and stickbaits into the whitewash. The bay itself has been weed free where there have been catches of herring, skippy and King George whiting while the jetty has been a reliable back stop to grab a few herring after sunset. light winds and lower  swell should see the weed situation improve this weekend.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Nannygai to 3.5kg have been caught at Mondrain Island, while 30kg-plus Samsonfish have been landed at Woody and Black islands. Douglas Patch has been a hotspot for good bags of demersal species, while the odd pink snapper and plenty of queen snapper have been caught at Buddy Head. Observation Island has held harlequin fish and blue groper. West Beach, Fourth Beach and Wylie Bay have produced big sand whiting and sizeable skippy, while Flat Rock has yielded King George whiting. Esperance Bay has fished well for squid.

Shore-based

Munglinup has produced gummy sharks and skippy to 4kg, while Warrenup and Roses Beach have held salmon to 4.5kg. Good tailor have come from Tagon Beach and Thomas River, while Dunns Rocks has offered gummy sharks, mulloway and salmon. There has been a hot early-morning salmon bite at Fourth and Salmon beaches. Town Jetty and Taylor Street jetties have fished well for garfish and squid in the afternoons and after dark, while Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has held sizeable King George whiting and skippy. Decent flathead have been caught at Wylie Bay, while bream chasers using soft plastic lures have done well at Woody Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches

Boats

Despite the good conditions there have been few reports from crews chasing reef species. King George Sound, however, has been fishing quite well for its standard fare of medium-sized King George whiting and decent squid, with herring and flathead often among the bycatch.

Shore-based

Beach fishing has been very quiet but a bit of burley has often brought in herring, skippy and whiting and tarwhine. Gull rock and Cheynes could be worth a crack. Emu Point has offered a few herring and small King George whiting as have the town marina and Frenchman Bay. The latter location have produced some nice squid, while herring and small skippy have been the main catches at the town marina. Mulloway catches have picked up in the Kalgan River and it and the King and Hay rivers have produced just a few bream but the sizes have been very good.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Luke Latty went out with Wade Fennell and managed to get himself into some proper fights against the Sambo's, safe to say he won this particular bout!

Boats

Pink snapper have been fishing very well in depths from 10m out to 50m and good numbers of dhufish to 15kg have been keeping them company. Crews fishing both sides of Bunbury and in Geographe Bay have often been back at the ramp in just a few hours. Samsonfish, fox fish and harlequin fish have been among the by-catch. In Bunbury the better dhufish ground has been in 12-15m and also in 35m. Tuna have been active as well and have been taking small slices and stickbaits as they follow masses of white-bait sized school a couple of kilometres offshore from Geographe Bay up to Belvedere and Buffalo beaches. Good squid have also been caught around Bunbury and in Geographe Bay in 2-20m depths, with 5m the sweet spot while trolling in the Bunbury estuary has produced small chopper tailor. Augusta’s inshore waters have offered King George whiting and skippy. Kayak fishers launching at Dolphin Road have been getting King George whiting and squid in 5m or so.

Shore-based

Shore anglers got their share of pink snapper late last week and into the weekend with good fish being taken on the drone and the cast north of Bunbury at Binningup and Preston beach with a few tailor mixed in with them. Tailor fishing has been better south of town at Dalyellup and herring numbers have been good at most beaches.  At the Bunbury Cut herring, small tailor, skippy and tarwhine have been caught while the Collie River has offered a few soapie mulloway. With the warmer weather yellowfin whiting activity has also picked up and they have started to hit surface lures such as Bassday Sugarpens as well as small vibes. At Busselton Jetty squid have been plentiful along with a few herring and Samsonfish have been landed at the end of the jetty. King George whiting have been taken from the rocks around Augusta and further south a few resident salmon have been caught.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Redfin perch catches have been good at Wellington, Glen Mervyn and Harvey dams. Around the Collie town site has been good for redfin. Soft plastics have been catching most of the fish. Trout fishing has been difficult in the Southern Forests after big rainfall in the Pemberton area. In the Collie River a few rainbow trout have been taken around Honeymoon Pool. Drakesbrook Weir has held small rainbows as well.
Mandurah and surrounds
Looks like the Five Fathom bank anchor and burley techniques has been producing some tight lines for Nick. This fella measuring in at 91cm, nice work!

Picture:Tackle World Miami

Mandurah

Boats: Pink snapper have dominated catches with anchoring and burleying up around the Five-Fathom Bank proving very effective and some sizeable skippy have been caught there along with big 50cm-plus King George whiting. Dhufish chasers have done better targeting the lumps out from Dawesville and inside the Bouvard Reefs where they too have encountered big King George whiting. Inside the Five-Fathom Bank big numbers of plump sand whiting have been taken, while straight out of town crayfishing has been excellent in as little as 5m. Squid catches are starting to improve with the clearer water. In the estuary has been worth targeting tailor, either by trolling or fishing the drop-offs, while back offshore tuna have been in good numbers, behind the Five and really anywhere along the 35m line.

Land-based: Yellowfin whiting catches have certainly picked up in the estuary, especially on warmer days. Good tings have been caught behind the Novara Store on surface lures and small vibes and there has been a surprising number of small King George whiting mixed in with them. Bream fishing has picked up too with good fish taken in the Serpentine and Murray rivers along with quite a few soapy mulloway. Fishing has been good at the traffic bridges and at the Dawesville Cut for herring, juvenile salmon a few small tailor and some nice skippy and there have been small King George whiting at the estuary end. Beach fishing for tailor has been good as well with decent fish taken at White Hills and Tims Thicket while north of town San Remo, Silver Sands and Madora Bay have fished well. An angler fishing in the Melros area came across a school of hungry yellowfin whiting this week. Herring have been in good numbers on most beaches but for those after bigger quarry last week’s blow produced very little pink snapper action.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Crews have done well on pink snapper and dhufish behind Garden Island and towards the Five-Fathom Bank. The magic number has been 40m for dhufish to 15kg, good pink snapper and a few breaksea cod and baldchin groper. King George whiting to 60cm have been mixed in as well. Smaller King George whiting and sand whiting to 30cm have been caught in Mangles Bay, Cockburn Sound, inshore at Garden Island and on Parmelia Bank. These locations have also fished well for squid, which have been caught in as little as 1m with white and green jigs working well. The weed banks just off Woodman Point have also thrown up a few squid. Cockburn Sound and the back of Coventry Reef have produced some chunky skippy, while Mewstones has offered decent tailor. Towards the Five-Fathom bank and around Garden Island schools of tuna and bonito have been encountered

Land-based: Good pink snapper were caught at Secret Harbour during the wild weather leading into the weekend, with the biggest going 98cm. Tailor catches have been good at Secret Harbour too and also at Port Kennedy and Long Point. Evenings have been best for them and school mulloway have shown up on the rising tide as well. Local beaches are also fishing well for herring and sand whiting. Woodman Point has offered a few garfish. It has also fished well for herring, whiting and squid, as has the Ammo Jetty. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have yielded chopper tailor and herring as well as a few squid. Squid have also been in good numbers at Point Peron.  Scaly mackerel have shown up at Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties and also Woodman Point. Herring and whiting have been among the chopper tailor at Long Point, while the Penguin Island sand spit has offered herring and sand whiting and the odd flathead.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Jake Torre with a cracking mulloway caught in the Swan River. Check out the catch-and-release on his insta here.

Boats

Crews have been filling their boats with good numbers of dhufish and pink snapper north and south of Rottnest Island. South of Rottnest, the 70m depths have offered pink snapper and breaksea cod. Snapper have been caught close in in 5-10m out from Fremantle and really big ones around a metre have been taken in 100m depths behind Rottnest. The sweet spot for dhufish has been 30-40m and by-catch has included breaksea cod, baldchin groper and big King George whiting. These species have also been caught off Ocean Reef and Two Rocks. Smaller King George whiting and sand whiting have been caught at the Windmills, inshore from South Fremantle and Coogee and inshore at Hillarys. Sand whiting catches have been good off City Beach in 10m or so. Squid have also been fishing well, off South Fremantle and inshore at Hillarys. Tailor have been caught at Stragglers, while in the Swan River they have been picked up on the troll, often when the sea breeze kicks in. Tuna and yellowtail kingfish have been caught at Rottnest’s Parker Point, while the island’s bays have held King George whiting and squid. Big boats that ventured out into 600m-plus depths in the past week have caught hapuka and blue-eye trevalla.

Shore-based

Last week’s storm front proved to be a grand finale for land-based pink snapper chasers with big numbers of quality fish landed at North Mole, from the service station right out to the lighthouse. Pink snapper were also on the chew at the Hillarys and Mindarie rock walls and on the northern beaches but by Saturday evening the action had slowed considerably. Both North and South moles have produced good numbers of herring, skippy and chopper tailor, along with a few garfish. Squid have been at both moles too but catches have been better at South Mole, while the South Fremantle rock walls have produced squid along with herring and skippy. Squid have also shown up at the northern rock walls. Tailor action has picked up on the metro beaches with 50cm-plus fish taking Halco Twistys and CID Shiversticks at Swanbourne and City beaches, while chopper tailor, herring and skippy have been caught at Floreat. On the northern beaches good tailor have been taken on Halco C-Gars and Halco Slidogs. Yanchep Lagoon has produced a few tailor in the mornings. A few school mulloway have been caught on north metro beaches while sand whiting catches have improved right along the metro coast. The Swan River has started to fire and it’s fair to say that’s it’s fishing better for tailor than the ocean. Tailor in the 40-50cm range have been widespread, the Narrows is fishing very well for them, as are the flats at Alfred Cove and Applecross where they have been surprising flathead chasers on the flats. Claremont has held a few as has the Causeway and big tailor have been taken up river too, at Maylands and Redcliffe, where a 60cm model was reported. Bream have been hard to find in the upper reaches but a few have been on the flats at Maylands, behind Burswood Casino and at the Narrows and at Canning Bridge and Claremont, while soapy mulloway have been widespread in the middle to upper reaches and in better numbers than bream. Flathead have been caught at the Narrows, Canning Bridge Applecross, Alfred Cove, Point Resolution, Claremont, East Fremantle and also at the Causeway and Maylands. In the middle sections of the river in mid-morning on the rising tide, especially on warmer days flathead have been moving into ankle-deep water to soak up the sun. Proof of the pudding was a 56cm model caught and released in the Applecross area on Monday, so it may be worthwhile to put in a few back casts. At East Fremantle a few flounder have been mixed in with flathead around the yacht clubs, while snook have turned up in Mosman Bay. The lower Swan has also held a few juvenile Samsonfish.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
