Pic of the Week!

No, this colourful snap wasn't taken up in Exmouth, this was taken at the FADs off Albany during a peachy weather window! We love the psychedelic mix of colours in this awesome photo sent in by @andrew_ward_3 and these FADs will be taken out within a couple of weeks, so make the most of them when the weather becomes more inviting! Broome catches
It was great to see several fishers from the @broome.fishing.club getting on to some solid tusky's this week right on their doorstep!

Boats

A few sailfish have started show up inshore waters with Spanish mackerel keeping them company, while crews heading straight out and wide for bottom species found red emperor were plentiful, along with coral trout, Rankin cod and saddletail snapper. Slightly closer in were spangled emperor, Spanish flag and blue-lined emperor. Very close in, bluebone have been at Entrance and Gantheaume Points, with divers encountering plenty. Tripletail and threadfin salmon have been in Roebuck Bay, while Crab Creek has been the pick of the creek systems, holding mainly threadfin salmon. Mud crab catches have been steady in the creeks as well. There are some strong easterly winds rolling in over the next week, but they should drop off in the afternoons.

Shore-based

Town Beach Jetty has held bream, small trevally and queenfish, while bigger trevally and queenfish have been landed along with a few bluebone by those wading out at Entrance Point.  At Cable Beach and Town Beach whiting catches have been steady, but the local creeks have been very quiet. In the bug-infested Fitzroy River decent barramundi have been landed at Langi Crossing, the Cuttings and Telegraph Pool.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
One of the most striking looking (and hardest striking) fish in the sea, doesn't get much better than red bass on the surface for @onstrikecharters

Boats

Despite the wind many crews have enjoyed good mid-morning windows on the west side, with some excellent red emperor being taken in 40-60m out from the Lefroy passages and good Spanish mackerel landed at the back of the reef. Helby Bank has held good Spaniards as well. In 80-120m depths, 2-5kg goldband snapper have been in reasonable numbers, while tinny fishers targeting the lagoons have done well on golden trevally and spangled emperor. A junior billfish tournament was held at the end of the holidays and a few black marlin and sailfish were landed, along with some decent wahoo and dolphinfish. Dolphinfish were active at the FADs also. The Muirons were hard to get to when the winds were blowing northerly’s, but they were holding Spanish mackerel, coral trout and Rankin cod in a wide range of depths from 10-80m. In Exmouth Gulf a few Spanish mackerel have turned up at the Shoals, which have also held blue-lined emperor and coral trout. At King Reef cobia have been seen swimming with the fish-stealing sharks. Fly-fishers targeting the offshore flats have caught cobia, along with permit and queenfish. Fishing for mud crabs has been steady and squid have been about in better numbers. It should be quite nice out on the water for a majority of this week with flat conditions expected. The swell will increase to more than 2m from Sunday evening to Tuesday.

How's the stunning electric blue on this blackspotted tuskfish this week on an epic session for @brody.sutton alongside @claterz!

Sizeable queenfish have been cruising around the town marina, which has also been producing bream, spangled emperor and mangrove jack. The marina’s outside wall and the rocks at the light industrial area have been fishing well for squid. Elsewhere in the Gulf, whiting have been in good numbers from the Town Beach right down to Learmonth. Mark Hourn landed an 8kg queenfish which couldn’t resist a live bait on 3kg line down at Learmonth this week. Learmonth Jetty has also offered bream, squid and mangrove jack. Bundegi has held its usual trevally and queenfish and live bait has been the go there, while on high tide the Bundegi boat ramp has produced mangrove jack and squid. At Winderabandi and Tantabiddi the lagoons have yielded spangled emperor and golden trevally, while at VLF Bay around to the top end of the Cape spangled emperor, golden trevally, queenfish and the odd tusky have been landed. Covering ground and throwing stickbaits has worked well up that way.

Recfishwest's Sam Bock enjoyed a nice land-based session at the tip of the Cape during the long weekend, with this decent queenfish smashing a stickbait in the shallows before being gently released.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Heads up to all West Coast, South-West and South Coast fishers planning to fish off the rocks from Friday, 2nd May until Wednesday, 7th May

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heads up for possible dangerous fishing conditions, with a significant swell moving along a majority of the WA coastline. This swell height, swell period and wave height is alarming, so make sure you keep the sand between your toes if land-based fishing over these days.

INFO:
- West to South-Westerly waves with significant wave heights of 3-4m from Friday evening between Cape Naturaliste and Walpole. Swell period of 10-11 seconds.
- Wave heights increasing to 4.5-6.5m with swell period 13-15 seconds from Saturday morning between Cape Naturaliste and Walpole, before extending north to Shark Bay and east to Israelite Bay during Saturday.
- Wave heights easing below 3m along the West Coast by Tuesday evening and along the South Coast by Wednesday afternoon.

Keeping safe comes down to better decision-making from improved alerts, communication, and awareness. No fish is worth risking your life for. If you know anyone planning to fish in these regions during this time, make sure you share this warning with them.

Kalbarri catches
Wagoe has been a solid spot for Spanish mackerel and @james4ncell and @littlemissdisneyy had a great time landing several stunning fish this week, including this 17kg beauty.

Boats

Bottom fishing has been producing a good mix of species including Rankin cod, baldchin groper, pink snapper and dhufish. Bigger dhufish have been taken further out north of town. Water temperatures have dropped by a few degrees and pelagic activity has slowed, but Spanish mackerel have been landed on both sides of town with the south side around Sand Patch fishing slightly better for them. Saturday morning should be glorious out on the water and Sunday morning looks worthy of a send despite the swell spiking up to 3m rather quickly. The mornings until at least Thursday also look inviting.

Shore-based

Good numbers of tailor have been caught in the early mornings and late afternoons at Red Bluff and at Wittercarra, where a few dart have been about. Bigger tailor have been landed at Goats Gulch and Pot Alley and these cliff-top locations have also produced golden trevally, skippy, small mulloway and pink snapper. Make sure you wear a lifejacket here at all times but we strongly recommend avoiding fishing off the rocks between today and Wednesday given there is a big swell warning. One or two bigger tailor have been landed at the river mouth. Down at Wagoe, balloon fishers and droners have done well on Spanish mackerel and big tailor have also been caught also. The Murchison River has been fishing well. Good numbers of mud crabs have been in the system, cod and bream have been caught from the marina and up river, and chopper tailor have been at the marina jetty in the evenings. Yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit, at the town foreshore and on the flats on the other side of the river. Giant herring have also been active in the Murchison’s upper reaches, especially around Castle Rock.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
The Abrolhos Islands is absolutely loaded with coral trout which will always provide a great fight and 5-star quality feed. Photo credit @halcotackle

Boats

A few Spanish mackerel have been landed far north of town towards Horrocks where sharks have been very competitive. As for demersals, south-west of Geraldton had crews finding small dhufish and a couple of red emperor in 40m, while inside of African Reef fishers found the going slow but persevered for good bags of dhufish and baldchin groper, supplemented by sand bass and coral trout. Today should see the last of the nice conditions for a while with a big swell roaming in from Saturday evening along with the stronger southerly winds.

Shore-based

Mulloway have been the main game around town this week and they have been widespread, with good catches coming from south of Flat Rocks right up to Coronation. They have ranged from undersized soapies to 1.4m slabs, with plenty of the bigger models about. Tailor have been patchy from south of Flat Rocks to Wakefield Road, while some of the better mulloway spots have included Flat Rocks, West Bank, Wakefield Road, Southgates and Tarcoola. North of Drummond Cove saw sizeable mulloway caught, while at Drummond itself good tailor were landed. Drummond, Sunset Beach and the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina have fished well for herring to 30cm. In town the whiting have been patchy, with most around 20cm and only a few 30cm models mixed in. Down at Dongara, a metre-plus mulloway was landed at the Port Denison marina.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches

Boats

Lancelin Angling & Aquatic Club held the ANZAC Cup last Saturday and the conditions were not great, but even so some good size pink snapper were evident in the catches from a range of depths. Only one dhufish was found by the boats on the day. The highlight of the day was the Shinnick team heading out wide capturing bass groper, eight bar cods and mulloway for some heavy bags. It wasn't just out wide that fished well though, the Bay has been fishing extremely well with plenty of skippy, herring, tarwhine, snook, King George whiting and squid. Today was nice on the weather front but it will turn rough from tomorrow until at least Wednesday. Launching doesn't look possible this weekend given the forecast but hopefully from Wednesday onwards it will be more inviting.

Shore-based

The seasons change into the cooler temperatures is seeing a lot more skippy and tarwhine, with rays also very active along the surf beaches. The tailor captures have slowed dramatically, but some bigger sizes are popping up. The odd mulloway has been landed and with the large swell forecast this weekend along with the new moon, we're expecting to see a lot more landed this week. Bread and butter species of herring and sand whiting have been a very reliable back up to gather a delicious feed, with a good uptick in the sizes of sand whiting.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
Boden Bosworth @justcruisen managed to snag this healthy 80cm mulloway that was ‘justcruisen’ the gutters near Esperance! A great snap from Matt Carter @catt_marter.

Boats

Nannygai to 65cm have been caught at Termination Island, while breaksea cod, nannygai and queen snapper have been landed at Davey and Long islands. Harlequin fish, breaksea cod and blue groper have been hitting the deck at Hope and Figure of Eight islands, with yellowtail kingfish active at Figure of Eight also. Tuna to 8kg have been taken at the back of Cull Island, while Cook Rocks has yielded decent squid in 15m. Esperance Bay has held herring, snook and skippy. Those stronger westerly winds and 2-3m swell will make it rough out on the water over the coming days but it should hopefully back off from Tuesday onwards.

Shore-based

Bronze whaler and gummy sharks, along with mulloway, have been caught at Thomas River, while Kennedy Beach has offered gummy sharks and solid skippy. Stockyards Beach has held flathead, tarwhine and salmon, while salmon and gummy sharks have been plentiful at Warrenup and Rose Beach. Both jetties in town have been thick with herring, while the Town Jetty has fished well for squid. Garfish have in good numbers after dark near the Taylor Street Jetty, while the town foreshore has fished well for sizeable King George whiting. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour was a surprise location for chopper tailor this week and it has also produced skippy. Fourth Beach has fished well for salmon early in the mornings, while at Woody Lake bream to 40cm have been landed on lures.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
An absolute beauty of a land-based pinkie for @jampacked_fishing_adventures this week on the South Coast! Make sure you always wear a lifejacket if giving this a go but we strongly advise all South Coast fishers stick to the sand over the coming week given their is a very large and dangerous swell incoming from today until Wednesday. You can see this warning from the Bureau of Meteorology here.

Boats

Excellent weather windows earlier this week allowed boats to get to the coral ground where nannygai were in abundance, along with pink snapper, queen snapper, breaksea cod and dhufish. Out even wider hapuka have been landed, while in close kayak fishers have been getting dhufish, nannygai, salmon and tuna. Salmon have been in good numbers around the islands, while tuna have been active off Bald Head. Some solid dolphinfish have been at the FADs, with a 13kg bull landed. In King George Sound when clear water can be found squid have been in good numbers and sizes for those prepared to cover some ground. Forget about heading out until at least Thursday next week as the wind and swell is looking very grumpy and dangerous until then.

The salmon were going ballistic off Cheynes Beach this week! Check out the @westernangler page to see all the action!

Shore-based

Salmon have been widespread and most people have landed a few most days. All the regular haunts have produced including Sand Patch, the beach at Salmon Holes (don’t even think about considering the rocks there this week), right along Cheynes, Ledge Beach, Cable Beach, Reef Beach, Lowlands, Nanarup and Shelley Beach. A big salmon was even pulled out of the town marina this week. Salmon catches have been consistent out west at Bremer Bay, while up around Walpole and West Cape Howe it has been feast or famine. Around town, herring have been thick as well and even the odd tuna and Samsonfish has been pulled from the salmon schools at Denmark, where Light and Ocean Beach have been the standouts. Denmark beaches have also produced pink snapper. Herring and skippy have been at Albany’s town marina, but the water there is still a bit murky and squid have been hard to find. It’s been a similar story at Emu Point, but the Frenchman Bay area has produced a few, along with herring and small King George whiting. Bream fishing in the King and Kalgan rivers has been quiet. It’s looking pretty hard on the land-based front this next week given the dangerous weather warning, the river might be a go or maybe a quick flick in the freshwater systems. Stick to the sand if you’re wetting a line but those big swells and wind will make it very hard to get a line out.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
One of the prettiest baldchin groper we've seen in recent memory and a great fish landed by @livinginsalt in our South-West this week!

Boats

Pink snapper and dhufish to a lesser extent have been rewarding inshore fishers with many crews doing well in 12m or so straight out from town. Bigger dhufish have been taken further out, in 25m-plus, and in Geographe Bay and off the Capes. Big King George whiting have been among the bycatch and cuttlefish have been plentiful in a range of depths, with squid active as well in 7-15m. Geographe Bay has fished well for squid too in 5-7m. Small yellowtail kingfish have been around the Bouvards and at the artificial reef, while yak fishers have landed dhufish and pink snapper off Smiths Beach and Canal Rocks. In the Leschenault Estuary, blue swimmer crabs have continued to be pulled up in good numbers and plenty of tailor and herring have been about to entertain drop netters between runs. She’s looking a bit windy and choppy on the forecast this weekend, but Monday onwards should become calmer out on the water.

Shore-based

Bigger fish have turned up at the beaches either side of Bunbury, with those north of town offering medium to large mulloway. From Preston Beach all the way down to Dalyellup, tailor in the 35-40cm range have been in good numbers, with the odd larger model and quite a few solid pink snapper showing up as well. Herring have been plentiful and they have been especially thick at Dalyellup in the mornings, while most of the beaches near Bunbury have held a few big flathead. Salmon reports have been meagre. Yeagerup and Warren beaches have been the most consistent spots, but catches have been very isolated at Eagle Bay, Point Picquet, Bunker Bay, Yallingup, Castle Rock and Hamelin Bay. Herring have been prolific at these locations and Hamelin Bay produced one or two school mulloway. At Smiths Beach, Yallingup and Dunsborough drone fishers have been getting on to pink snapper, while at Contos Beach a 70cm dhufish was landed from the stones during the calmer conditions earlier this week. The lower reaches of the Blackwood River have been holding good numbers of herring and skippy. The odd pink snapper has been caught at the end of Busselton Jetty, where herring and squid catches have slowed somewhat. In the Collie River giant herring and soapy mulloway have been the main catches, while the Bunbury Cut has held chopper tailor, skippy and tarwhine. Scoop netters have been doing well on blue swimmer crabs in the Leschenault Estuary, especially in the early mornings and evenings.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Getting out-fished by your son is the only time a father will be both annoyed and proud of his offspring, but this 45cm redfin perch snap from Blake this week in our South-West better go straight to the pool room!
Bigger redfin perch have started to show up as the water temperatures drop with 30cm-plus fish active in the Collie River and at Wellington Dam. Some larger 40cm+ models turned up at times and this action should improve over the coming weeks. Slightly smaller models have been pulled from the little bays and inlets at Harvey Dam. Soft plastics in darker colours such as motor oil traditionally work well this time of year and usually out-fish hard-bodied lures and spinners. A couple of rainbow trout were landed in the Harvey area this week and several good-sized browns were plucked from Logue Brook Dam.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Demersal fishing was a bit slower this week but some nice dhufish and a few pink snapper were picked up out from Dawesville in 30m-plus depths. Inshore pink snapper fishing has been good though, with plenty landed at James Service Reef and on the Five-Fathom Bank, with a few yellowtail kingfish turning up at the Five as well. Solid skippy and Samsonfish have also been active in the pink snapper burley trails. There have been a few Spanish mackerel sighted towards the Bouvards, but they have shown little interest in baits or lures. One or two dolphinfish have been taken at the FADs and out very wide a swordfish was landed this week. Squid fishers have been doing well on the calmer mornings off Seascapes and Melros. In the Peel-Harvey estuary drop netters have found blue swimmer crabs to be in very shallow water. Herring and chopper tailor have been plentiful in the estuary and a few larger juvenile salmon have turned up also. Sunday onwards looks best for the boaties.

Land-based: The mild cold front and big swell last week contributed to a nice surge in pink snapper activity with big fish landed right along the coast from White Hills to Madora Bay. The town rock walls also produced. Mid-autumn is also a great time to target big mulloway on local beaches which is something tailor fishers should keep in mind. Tailor fishing has been steady on most beaches and big fat herring and garfish have been around, especially on the calmer mornings. The Dawesville Cut has produced herring, garfish chopper tailor and the odd skippy, as did the Mandurah bridges, while some nice squid have been landed on slack water in the mornings at the Cut. Scoopers have found blue swimmer crabs to be in good numbers close in, while yellowfin whiting chasers prepared to put in the hours have landed big tings in ones and twos in many parts of the estuary. The near 30 degree days on Wednesday and Thursday fired up the smaller ones as well.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Demersal fishers have been doing well on dhufish, pink snapper, breaksea cod and baldchin groper at the back of Garden Island and towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Pink snapper have been thick inshore in Cockburn Sound, with the shipping channel, the Sisters and behind Garden Island all producing. Big skippy shave been showing up in the burley trail as well. Quite a few big flathead were also among the bycatch for demersal fishers this week. Squid fishers have struggled this week due to dirty water and few crews have been targeting sand whiting and King George whiting closer in with better results. There have been hordes of herring in Warnbro Sound, while a couple of surprise catches in Cockburn Sound this week included a juvenile spangled emperor and an undersized blue-lined emperor. Back towards the Five-Fathom Bank several Spanish mackerel around the 20kg mark were landed, while metre-plus mulloway have been pulled up from the shipping channel. The white-water around Coventry Reef has yielded a few tailor. Midweek, schools of salmon around 50cm or so were reported near Garden Island. Sunday looks to be the better of the two days this weekend albeit with a touch of rain expected.

Land-based: The Ammo Jetty and Rockingham Jetty produced big mulloway this week. At least six were landed from the Rockingham Jetty and most were caught on live baits. The Ammo Jetty has held plenty of scaly mackerel which have been kept company by slimy mackerel. Sizeable mulloway have also been landed from the local beaches. Secret Harbour has fished well for them and also produced one or two pink snapper. Snapper chasers are expected to do well later this week and over the weekend as the cold front passes through and the swells are up. The local beaches have continued their consistent run for tailor. Warnbro, Long Point, Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy have been some of the better spots and most beaches have held a good variety of smaller species including lots of herring, snook, skippy, sand whiting and the odd big flathead. The grain terminal beach, Warnbro and the Penguin Island spit have been the pick of the flathead locations. Palm Beach Jetty and Woodman Point have not produced any mulloway of note, but they have held herring, chopper tailor, skippy and slimy mackerel. These species have also been caught at the Ammo Jetty and the Rockingham Jetty. Squid have fished best at the Henderson Cliffs and Palm Beach Jetty. Waters just off the Rockingham foreshore and the 1-1.5m depths off Woodman Point have held big blue swimmer crabs for those who don’t mind a swim.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Rottnest's inshore reefs are loaded with crays at the moment and @kurtkrispyn managed to loop two crays on one drop this week!

Boats

Dhufish have been rewarding demersal fishers near Carnac and Rottnest islands where they have been holding in 45-70m, with baldchin groper and breaksea cod keeping them company. Pink snapper have been in much closer, especially off the northern suburbs. Dhufish have been in very close off Two Rocks with crews finding 25-30m the best depths. Yellowtail kingfish have been in good numbers from Carnac Island through to Rottnest’s West End. Inshore from Fremantle, off Hillarys and in the bays at Rottnest squid have been active in deeper water, while at Coogee yak fishers are having to paddle out about a kilometre to get a feed. King George whiting were about in good sizes and numbers for the those in the know. Finding the right ground has been key and at this time of the year targeting a mixture of sand and seagrass is best, rather the sand and coral, with the KGs likely feeding on worms tangled in the seagrass. The better spots for KGs and big fat sand whiting have been off Cottesloe, Scarborough and Marmion. Professional fishers chasing scaly mackerel reported baitfish have been thick out at Gage Roads, with plenty of slimy mackerel mixed in with scaly mackerel. This could be why several big mulloway were landed out there in the past week. At Mewstones and Stragglers chunky tailor have been taken from the white-water. In the Swan River big blue swimmer crabs have been caught in better number in shallower depths with the flats off the Flying Squadron Yacht Club, Karrakatta Banka and the Como flats all worth a try. The weather isn’t very inviting this weekend off the metro with some stronger winds settling in from this evening along with a 2m swell and rain, but it could see the pinkies roaming in close. Around Wednesday should see the calmer conditions return.

Recfishwest is stoked to be backing the Get Reel community fishing comp and family fun day at Two Rocks on 10 May – especially after working with the organisers to share the prize pool across a range of species categories. The $4,000 top prize is now up for grabs for a ‘mystery length’ catch of any of four key demersals and not just dhuies – a great move for encouraging better stewardship of these recovering species. To help mix things up further, Recfishwest is chipping in $2,000 in extra prizes for nearshore species like skippy, herring and whiting – also making it a great day out for fishers in smaller boats or tinnies. Click here for more details!

Shore-based

Plenty of pink snapper have been caught over the past week when the swells were up with five or six good ones landed at North Mole and more from the rock walls at Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. When the swells were down the old Swanbourne drain fished well for tailor and Floreat offered herring, sand whiting and flathead. Cottesloe produced some nice tailor and herring and garfish have been there in good numbers. Pink snapper, the odd Samsonfish and decent tailor hit the sand at northern beaches this week, while Quinns fished well for herring and the odd dart. At North Mole several big mulloway were hooked and lost on the harbour side of the rock wall, while in calmer weather herring, garfish, skippy and the odd chopper tailor have turned up. Fremantle Harbour has been full of scalies and not much else, while the lower reaches of the Swan River around North Fremantle have yielded juvenile pink snapper and rat Samsonfish. Squid catches have been reasonable from the rock walls in South Fremantle, which have also offered herring and skippy among the numerous pickers. Bream chasers in the Swan River have been finding fish around structure from the Causeway through to Guildford, with soft plastics lures and cubed mullet baits working well. If you’re willing to brave the wet and windy conditions this weekend a pink snapper or two could be a chance off the rockwalls.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
