The seasons change into the cooler temperatures is seeing a lot more skippy and tarwhine, with rays also very active along the surf beaches. The tailor captures have slowed dramatically, but some bigger sizes are popping up. The odd mulloway has been landed and with the large swell forecast this weekend along with the new moon, we're expecting to see a lot more landed this week. Bread and butter species of herring and sand whiting have been a very reliable back up to gather a delicious feed, with a good uptick in the sizes of sand whiting.
Boats
Bronze whaler and gummy sharks, along with mulloway, have been caught at Thomas River, while Kennedy Beach has offered gummy sharks and solid skippy. Stockyards Beach has held flathead, tarwhine and salmon, while salmon and gummy sharks have been plentiful at Warrenup and Rose Beach. Both jetties in town have been thick with herring, while the Town Jetty has fished well for squid. Garfish have in good numbers after dark near the Taylor Street Jetty, while the town foreshore has fished well for sizeable King George whiting. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour was a surprise location for chopper tailor this week and it has also produced skippy. Fourth Beach has fished well for salmon early in the mornings, while at Woody Lake bream to 40cm have been landed on lures. Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.
Salmon have been widespread and most people have landed a few most days. All the regular haunts have produced including Sand Patch, the beach at Salmon Holes (don’t even think about considering the rocks there this week), right along Cheynes, Ledge Beach, Cable Beach, Reef Beach, Lowlands, Nanarup and Shelley Beach. A big salmon was even pulled out of the town marina this week. Salmon catches have been consistent out west at Bremer Bay, while up around Walpole and West Cape Howe it has been feast or famine. Around town, herring have been thick as well and even the odd tuna and Samsonfish has been pulled from the salmon schools at Denmark, where Light and Ocean Beach have been the standouts. Denmark beaches have also produced pink snapper. Herring and skippy have been at Albany’s town marina, but the water there is still a bit murky and squid have been hard to find. It’s been a similar story at Emu Point, but the Frenchman Bay area has produced a few, along with herring and small King George whiting. Bream fishing in the King and Kalgan rivers has been quiet. It’s looking pretty hard on the land-based front this next week given the dangerous weather warning, the river might be a go or maybe a quick flick in the freshwater systems. Stick to the sand if you’re wetting a line but those big swells and wind will make it very hard to get a line out. Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.
Plenty of pink snapper have been caught over the past week when the swells were up with five or six good ones landed at North Mole and more from the rock walls at Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks. When the swells were down the old Swanbourne drain fished well for tailor and Floreat offered herring, sand whiting and flathead. Cottesloe produced some nice tailor and herring and garfish have been there in good numbers. Pink snapper, the odd Samsonfish and decent tailor hit the sand at northern beaches this week, while Quinns fished well for herring and the odd dart. At North Mole several big mulloway were hooked and lost on the harbour side of the rock wall, while in calmer weather herring, garfish, skippy and the odd chopper tailor have turned up. Fremantle Harbour has been full of scalies and not much else, while the lower reaches of the Swan River around North Fremantle have yielded juvenile pink snapper and rat Samsonfish. Squid catches have been reasonable from the rock walls in South Fremantle, which have also offered herring and skippy among the numerous pickers. Bream chasers in the Swan River have been finding fish around structure from the Causeway through to Guildford, with soft plastics lures and cubed mullet baits working well. If you’re willing to brave the wet and windy conditions this weekend a pink snapper or two could be a chance off the rockwalls. A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
