I have to admit, May was good but not on fire as the month of May should be. But, I also recognize I am part of the problem. Well, let me explain. While we did have 2-3 slow days towards the last week of May due largely to the new moon, most days were good. But, it wasn't on fire as it should have been and therefore I perceive it as slow. Case in point, one on trip towards the end of the month was with Evan and his son Austin. We fished two days and on day two we hooked 3 tarpon, landed one and hadn't another 2 eat a fly but not get hooked, caught some fun ladyfish and then ended the trip losing a bonefish on fly. Ok, so it wasn't a slow day but for some reason it felt that way, maybe because I expected to land a few bonefish.
Anyway, the second half of the month was actually pretty good with mostly bonefish and some tarpon landed. I had one trip with Bill from NOLA where we had some great shots at tailing bonefish and had a permit eat our crab but not get hooked. On the last day regular client Chris had several shots at tailing bonefish on fly and had one track his fly and eat it next to the boat only to spit it out before Chris could set. Admittedly, Chris can definitely fish and this one was not on him but we ended the day landing three bonefish.
I had to work the entire Memorial Day weekend and had some really cool fly overs by B-52, 1, B2, F22, F16 F16, F4 and A10's and it was mind blowingly cool (is that even a word?). We are finally having some windless calm mornings so hopefully this continues making it easier and moire exciting to chase permit and bonefish early morning.
Oh, and I had a bull shark eat the propeller off mat trolling motor!
