The Peak of Winter Action in Puerto Vallarta

Hello, Anglers! Captain Pete here, reporting on what is shaping up to be a phenomenal winter season in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. As we close out November’s heat and cruise into December 2025, the water temperatures are settling into that perfect range (around  75 deg.), signaling the arrival of our biggest winter game fish. The migration is in full swing, turning the deep blue Pacific waters into an angler’s dream. If you’re looking for a trophy fish or just a fun day of non-stop bending the rod, now is the time to book your trip!

Offshore Adventures: Targeting the GiantsMarlin fishing in Puerto Vallarta

The deep-sea action is where the serious thrill is right now. Our big offshore destinations—El Banco (The Bank) and El Corbetena (The Rock)—are holding massive schools of bait, and the predators are right behind them.

The Striped Marlin bite is exactly what we expect during this time of year, with numerous hook-ups reported on slow-trolled live bait and high-speed lures. These powerful billfish thrive in the slightly cooler winter current breaks, providing acrobatic, rod-bending fights that are truly unforgettable. If a Marlin is on your bucket list, an 8- to 12-hour trip out to these spots is mandatory.

The Yellowfin Tuna have been cooperative, too! While the huge Cow Tuna might have moved further out, we’re seeing steady catches of 40–80 lb schoolie fish, especially around the high spots of El Corbetena. Targeting them with jigs and kite-fished baits has proven most successful. We are also finding plenty of Sailfish, which are putting on spectacular aerial displays before being tagged and released. Remember, our commitment to conservation means we practice catch-and-release with all billfish, ensuring the health of this fishery for years to come.

Of course, no report is complete without mentioning the delicious Dorado (Mahi-Mahi). They are still abundant, chasing down schools of flying fish and small bait near temperature breaks and floating debris offshore. They offer great action and make for an excellent dinner back on shore!

Inshore Action in Banderas Baycatching sailfish in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The magnificent Banderas Bay is teeming with life. For anglers on shorter, four- to six-hour trips, inshore fishing is on fire. The waters around Punta Mita and Cabo Corrientes are producing excellent results.

Our star inshore catch remains the powerful Roosterfish. While typically a nearshore species, their activity peaks in the winter months as they forage close to the rocks and beaches. Targeting them with live mullet or caballitos is the ticket for a spectacular fight.

We are also finding huge schools of Spanish Mackerel and Jack Crevalle providing non-stop action, perfect for families and beginners. These trips guarantee fast-paced action and the chance to reel in some truly delicious table fare.

The Winter Wildlife Spectacle: Humpback Whales

As the peak of the winter fishing season coincides with the height of the wildlife season, December is absolutely magical. The Humpback Whales have arrived in large numbers to give birth and breed within the calm, warm waters of Banderas Bay. It is common to see mothers and their calves breaching right alongside the boat while we are fishing inshore. This incredible experience elevates every charter into a full-fledged nature tour. Ask about our specialized fishing/whale watching combo trips!

Captain Pete's December Tipsdorado fishing in Puerto Vallarta

December offers flat, beautiful seas most days, with air temperatures ranging from 65 degrees in the mornings to 78 degrees mid-day. Layers are key! Also, don't forget the sunscreen. The water clarity is superb right now, which is a major factor for hooking up with big, visual predators like Striped Marlin and Sailfish.

If you are ready to land your trophy Yellowfin Tuna, experience explosive Roosterfish action, or just marvel at the Humpback Whales, give us a call or book online. We look forward to welcoming you aboard for an unforgettable adventure!

Merry Fishmas and a Happy New Year,
