Puerto Vallarta fishing report August 2025

 | By Capt. Pete on 8/3/2025 12:00:00 AM | Views (4)

As summer reaches its peak and school is close to starting, Puerto Vallarta transforms into one of Mexico’s premier sportfishing destinations. August 2025 promises big game fishing at its finest, with warm waters, aggressive pelagic species, and non-stop action that will thrill anglers of all skill levels. Whether you’re chasing trophy yellowfin tuna, battling acrobatic sailfish, or testing your skills against powerful roosterfish, this month delivers unforgettable fishing adventures. This is one of the best months to take the guys out for big game or the last summer fishing trip with the family as summer ends.

August Fishing Conditions: Ideal for Trophy Catches
fishing report for August 2025 Puerto Vallarta,Mexico
Water temperatures in Puerto Vallarta during August average a perfect 82-84°F, creating optimal conditions for both offshore and inshore fishing. While occasional afternoon rains may roll in, mornings typically offer calm seas and clear skies—ideal for spotting baitfish schools and working prime fishing spots.

We rely on advanced tools like the Terrifin App to locate blue water, track temperature breaks, and identify thermoclines where big fish congregate. This technology gives our charters a significant advantage in finding the most productive fishing grounds.

Offshore Fishing: Where the Giants Roam
Yellowfin Tuna – The Stars of August
August is prime time for yellowfin tuna in Puerto Vallarta. These powerful battlers are feeding aggressively, with schools concentrated at depths between 120-300 feet, particularly near temperature breaks and underwater structures.

Top Techniques for Trophy Tuna:

Live baiting with skipjack or flying fish

Deep dropping with downriggers for larger specimens

Chunking in areas with active surface feeds

Recent charters have reported explosive bites, with many tuna exceeding 100 pounds. The action has been so consistent that we’re calling this one of the best tuna seasons in recent years!

Sailfish & Marlin – Blue Water Battles
While sailfish numbers are slightly lower than peak season, they’re still a thrilling catch when trolling with diving plugs or rigged ballyhoo. Look for them in deep blue water beyond the 1,000-foot mark.

For marlin, August brings occasional shots at both blue and black marlin. These majestic predators are more scattered than in fall months, but when they strike, it’s an adrenaline rush like no other. We’ve had several marlin releases this month already, with most fish in the 300-500 lb range. Looking for more details about booking a fishing adventure with us click here.

Inshore & Bay Fishing: Non-Stop Action
Roosterfish – Puerto Vallarta’s Signature Fighter
The roosterfish bite has been nothing short of spectacular this August. These hard-charging predators are smashing topwater lures near rocky points, river mouths, and along sandy beaches. Light tackle anglers are enjoying epic battles, with many fish in the 30-60 lb class.

Hot Roosterfish Tactics:

Surface poppers at dawn

Slow-trolled live mullet

Soft plastics worked along current edges of Puerto Vallarta fishing

Snapper & Jack Crevalle – Reliable Bay Action
The dogtooth snapper bite remains strong around Las Marietas Islands and other rocky structures. These hard-fighting fish are crushing both live bait and artificials, with some specimens pushing 30+ pounds.

Meanwhile, jack crevalle are providing constant action in the bay, perfect for anglers who enjoy fast-paced fishing. These bruisers hit hard and fight dirty—great for introducing beginners to saltwater fishing.
