August Fishing Report for Hatteras

 | By xfernal on 8/30/2016 12:00:00 AM | Views (2062)

We fished 3 days last week (Thursday – Saturday) out of Hatteras. For 3 excellent days of weather we will be paying for it this week.

On Thursday we started a tad north of Rock Pile and ended the day around Monitor Buoy with 4 Wahoo in the box. Most were picked off in 25-30 fathoms. 2 of them were caught on the long rigger on a naked ballyhoo on wire. The other 2 were caught off a trolling weight and my new Purple/Black Wahoo rigs.

Here is a short video of leaving the inlet via Graham’s cut on a 27’ World Cat on Friday.

We started where we left off Thursday, close to Monitor Buoy. We had a hard time finding a line to work and it wasn’t until we heard folks catching Blackfin off 230 Rocks that we decided to pull lines and give it a try. As soon as we got there, we caught 1 on a purple/black Eye Catcher Blackfin rig. A couple of circles and had a quad on, that we went 3 for 4. A few more circles and had another quad that we went 2 for 4 on. On both quads, we had Blackfin on all 3 of the Blackfin rigs we had in the water (2 green, one with bird, and 1 purple). We also caught a skipjack on the way back to the shallower water to look for a Wahoo without success.

On Saturday I fished on a 30’ Ricky Scarborough boat. We caught a nice Wahoo inshore of the Monitor Buoy on high speed (Red Cowbell). We missed another on the wrecks close to Monitor Buoy as I was putting out the planer. Picked up 2 more off the planer on the purple/black Wahoo rig in 32 - 35 fathoms between the tower and monitor buoy, and just offshore of the line everyone else was working. We also caught a gaffer and a skipjack, as well as lost a couple other Wahoo before we could get them to the boat. We also saw a couple of free jumping Sailfish, but no bites. 3 gutted Wahoo weighed 90 pounds, with the largest at 38.
