Hatteras King Mackerel Fishing

 | By xfernal on 11/28/2016 11:30:00 AM | Views (2449)

We started the day a little offshore of Bad Bottoms. Most of the fleet was piled up close to the Northeastern wreck. We stayed out of the chaos and tried to find the warm water as an eddy was moving to the South, confusing us a bit. It took a while, but as soon as we crossed into 68 degree water I saw a big swirl off the starboard and got a close up of a 200 pound Bluefin Tuna swim not 5 feet off the stern. I could even see the zig zag finlets going down the back as it laid over on the side as it swam through our wake. Too bad the season is closed, or we would have changed gear to chase them.

The water temp quickly rose from 68 to 72 degrees and we were surrounded by two tone dolphin, bait, and birds. We went from catching False Albacore to King Mackerel, and for about 2 hours we filled up the kill box with 350 pounds of fish. The green spoon was hot. Several times, I set the leader back and before I could drop the planer, we would have another fish on. While most of the day was slow, when it was hot, it was on fire. I just wished we had found that 70-72 degree water earlier in the day.
