Hatteras Report for mid March

The talk of the town has certainly been about Kenny Koci from Wasabi catching more Bluefin Tuna. He definitely has them figured out. He brought back another one this week, But, the more interesting catch was another Swordfish, proving that these fish are here year round, you just have to get out there and find them. I am looking forward to doing just that in the very near future.

Most of the Bluefin have been caught way up on the 600 line (The Point), right on the edge of the drop in 40 fathoms. After the warm front we had over the last couple weeks, then the temp drop, it has pushed them from the 400 line to the 800 line, and now back down to the 600.  I suspect some of those canyons south of the point may be holding them as well when the water temps are favorable.

Way down South on the other 600 line has been excellent Wahoo fishing. A boat yesterday out of Morehead even had a nice catch of Yellowfins to go with their Blackfins.

Other catches offshore have been Mako Shark, Bonita (False Albacore), and a few King Mackerel. On bottom, anglers have been catching lots of Triggerfish, Black Sea Bass, Amberjack, and a few Vermilion Snapper.

The inshore folks have been busy catch Red Drum, Bluefish, Flounder, Sea Mullet, and Northern Puffers (blow toads). Hopefully it will continue to warm up along with the catches.
