Cape Cod Fishing

Cape Cod Fishing

Cape Cod is a cape in the Atlantic ocean that is a popular destination during summer. It serves as the southern boundary of the Gulf of Maine and extends upward toward Nova Scotia. Fifteen towns are within the cape, and Cape Cod canal separates most of the cape from mainland Massachusetts. Occasionally, whales and dolphins use the canal, which can cause it to temporarily close. Construction of the canal started in 1909, and it opened for use in 1914.v

The cape has a long maritime history. As described in the Vinland sagas, the Vikings explored Cape Cod and the nearby region in 1000 CE. Archeological evidence of a Viking settlement was found in Newfoundland, confirming descriptions in the sagas. The Pilgrims made their first landing in Cape Cod hundreds of years later and had an altercation with natives. They thought the area was too sandy and sailed across Cape Cod Bay where they established Plymouth. Settlers who spread from Plymouth found their way into Cape Cod again and settled in Yarmouth, Sandwich and Barnstable.

Cape Cod fishing has plenty of species you could target, including Cod, Haddock, Bluefish, Flounder, Striped Bass, Black Seabass, Bluefin Tuna, Scup and Tautog. There are a few freshwater areas in Cape Cod in the form of ponds and streams that hold Largemouth Bass and Trout. Striped bass is abundant in the bays and canal from May to October, but can be caught year round. Offshore you will find many different species of tuna with Little Tunny and Bluefin Tuna more commonly caught closer to shore and a few Yellowfin and Big Eye Tuna caught offshore. In the warmer months, Mahi-mahi and Wahoo make an appearance offshore. Tilefish and Swordfish are popular targets offshore as well.
