Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
Clarks Hill Lake is a 71,000-acre man-made lake at the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The state of Georgia calls it Clarks Hill Lake, whereas the federal government refers to it as J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir or Lake Strom Thurmond. If you're wondering why the state and federal government have such different names for the lake, it's because residents were upset that the federal government passed a bill to change the name without consulting them. Georgia's state legislature stood by continuing to call it Clarks Hill. .
The Army Corps of Engineers created the lake in 1951 and 1952 after working several years on building the nearby J. Strom Thurmond Dam. There are boat launches, marinas and fish cleaning stations at Clarks Hill Lake. Parks and campgrounds surround the area as well. The enormous lake features 1,200 miles of shoreline, giving you plenty of space for fishing and enjoying nature. .
Clarks Hill Lake fishing often produces largemouth bass and striped bass. Other popular catches include shellcracker, crappie, bluegill, white bass and hybrid bass. You have a chance at catching a giant catfish. Some of the record catfish catches at Clarks Hill Lake are a flathead catfish at 64 pounds, 3.5 ounces, a blue catfish at 62 pounds and a channel catfish at 25-pounds, two ounces. Striped bass also holds one of the Clarks Hill Lake fishing records with a 55-pound, 12-ouncer caught. .
Spring is the best season for Clarks Hill Lake fishing, but you can catch fish here any time of the year. Bass, shad and herring are feeding and spawning in shallow areas of the lake during spring. Shellcracker are abundant as spring comes to an end. If you visit during winter, the top species you'll find are largemouth bass, striped bass, black crappie and channel catfish. .
