Lewes Fishing

Lewes Fishing

Lewes, known as The First Town in The First State, is a small city in the Cape Region in Delaware with an interesting history of resiliency. Dutch settlers founded the town in 1631 as a whaling and trading post. The Native American tribe Lenape wiped them out in 1632. The city of Amsterdam gave a land grant to Mennonites for settling in the area in 1662. It suffered a similar fate as the first settlement. England conquered New Netherland and ordered for the settlement to be burned to the ground. The Dutch managed to resettle it again in 1673, but a group of Maryland colonists burned it down. After overcoming a tumultuous beginning, Lewes is now a peaceful location with excellent fishing.

Species you could catch while inshore fishing include Bluefish, Flounder, Spotted Seatrout, Striped Bass, and Weakfish. Nearshore fishing around Lewes can deliver Black Sea Bass, Tautog, and Porgy on bottom. Bluefin, False Albacore (Little Tunny), and Spanish Mackerel are common species you can catch in the nearshore waters. Your likely offshore catches are Bigeye Tuna, Blue Marlin, Dolphinfish (Mahi-mahi), Wahoo, White Marlin, and Yellowfin Tuna. Deep dropping can produce Blueline Tilefish, Golden Tilefish, Swordfish, and Wreckfish. A record 21.8-pound Tautog was caught off the shore of Lewes, beating the Delaware state record at the time. Another impressive catch while Lewes fishing is a 17.1-pound Sheepshead with a girth of 24 inches and a length of 28 inches.
